IBM THINKPAD 710T Contents Announcement Letter Number 193-066 dated March 2, 1993 US - Last Revised on March 2, 1993 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The ThinkPad (R) 710T is a high-powered offering in the pen-based computer market. It provides users with a natural way of interfacing with a powerful computational device. The ThinkPad 710T is significantly different from conventional computers in that an electronic pen serves as the primary means of entering data by writing on the surface of the display. The ThinkPad 710T replaces paper and clipboards, paper and binders, and even notebook computers because of its form factor, weight and durability. This rugged, battery-operated unit is designed for a wide range of mobile professionals or non-professionals who cannot or will not use computers that have only keyboard or mouse input devices. The main CPU is a 80486 SLC 25MHz microprocessor with 16K cache. Standard memory is 4MB on the planar, which can be expanded by SIMM cards up to 12MB maximum. Three different memory sizes of SIMM cards are offered as optional features: 2MB, 4MB and 8MB. Three models are offered. The first is a ThinkPad File (open bay) model. Blank or preloaded ThinkPad Files are offered as optional features for use with this model. The other two are hard disk models with the PenDOS (1) or PenPoint (2) operating system preloaded. The hard disk drive (HDD) models offer a 60MB HDD and one Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) Type 2 slot that can be used for the ThinkPad File (TPF) card or for a PCMCIA modem card. The TPF Model offers three PCMCIA Type 2 slots. Three different size (5MB/10MB/15MB) ThinkPad Files are offered as optional features, and can be used in any of the slots. The IBM ThinkPad 710T provides expansion capability by supporting PCMCIA Type 1, 2 and 3 adapters (ThinkPad file model only) compatible with Release 2.0 of the PCMCIA Standard dated September 1991. The liquid crystal display (LCD) is transflective and can be used with or without backlight. The backlight can be turned off by a switch when the system is used in daylight. Operating with the backlight off prolongs battery life. All I/O connectors are mounted on the main planar and all I/O, such as parallel, serial (RS-232-D), external keyboard, mouse, and external 3.5-inch 1.44MB diskette drive, are supported by the ThinkPad 710T system. A connector is provided for attaching an external CRT. When using an external CRT, the CRT and the LCD display the same image simultaneously. Planned Availability Date: March 16, 1993. IN BRIEF . . . o Large, clear and vivid LCD o High-performance processor (80486 SLC 25MHz) o Expandable memory o ThinkPad File model for ruggedness o Two hard disk models for greater storage preloaded with an operating system: - PenDOS or - PenPoint o PCMCIA technology o Support of multiple pen-based operating systems o VGA, serial, parallel, keyboard, mouse, and external diskette drive ports o Powered by internal battery or external AC power supply Customer Letter Section DESCRIPTION RECOGNITION OF PEN-BASED INPUT IBM ThinkPad 710T opens the field of computing power to three groups of users who do not now use computers: o Those who cannot use computers as they are too mobile to use a keyboard/mouse interface, or who work in adverse conditions o Those who choose not to use a keyboard/mouse interface, such as a physician, attorney or business executive o Those with a character (language) barrier to keyboard/mouse use, such as the Japanese. IMPROVED PRODUCTIVITY Pen-oriented computing and handwriting recognition will allow both professionals and non-professionals to take advantage of the field of computers especially in the areas of data collection (free form or via predetermined forms), and communications. COMMUNICATION: Most uses of the IBM ThinkPad 710T will involve the collection of data for uploading to a larger system, or downloading of reference material to be used in the field. ENABLING NEW APPLICATIONS IBM ThinkPad 710T allows users who are currently not taking advantage of computer power to take advantage of applications for collection and transmission of data to other systems, or to bring reference material immediately to hand when in the field. ADDITIONAL PRODUCT INFORMATION The digitizer used for the IBM ThinkPad 710T is electromagnetic and the X-Y location is selected by electromagnetic coupling between the pen and the digitizer 3 panel. The data of the X-Y coordinates is translated into five bytes of data and is sent to the system through one of the serial ports. The pen itself has no battery and is not tethered. For the customer who prefers a tethered pen, a hole is provided in the pen cap that can be used to tether the pen. The digitizer meets the requirements of the handwriting recognition program and handwriting operation is enabled on the IBM ThinkPad 710T system. Other standard features include a detachable handle, a soft cover for the system and AC adapter, a time and date clock (with lithium battery backup), and a speaker. Engineering software is newly designed for the IBM ThinkPad 710T and supports two new features. One is quick POST, which is effective for problem determination and completed within approximately 10 seconds. The other is Built-in Setup/Diagnostics. This eliminates both the reference diskette and diagnostic diskette, and allows setup/diagnostics operations to be performed very quickly and easily. The optional ThinkPad Files supported by IBM ThinkPad 710T comply with JEIDA's guideline Version 4.2 (PCMCIA Type 2). These files consist of flash memory and a control chip, which allows the software to access the card in the same manner as the IDE interface (HDD interface). Both blank and preloaded ThinkPad Files are offered as optional features. Power source for the IBM ThinkPad 710T is either the internal battery or an external AC power supply such as the AC adapter. Power management function controls the sub-systems power condition to extend battery life. When the system is powered off or in suspend mode with the AC adapter connected, the battery pack contained with the system is recharged in about three hours by the quick-charge function. Also the internal battery pack can be removed for recharging using the optional quick charger. The system has a NiCD battery that acts as a backup battery. When the main battery is removed, the backup battery powers the system. The backup battery allows the user to change the main battery without turning the power off. A lithium backup battery is used for RTC/CMOS power. IBM ThinkPad 710T provides password security. Password security is implemented for both power-on password and keyboard-disable password. If the power of RTC/CMOS memory is removed, the power-on password stored in the RTC/CMOS memory will be lost, and the system could work without a power-on password. The IBM ThinkPad 710T has UL, CSA, TCA, GOP, FCC Class-B, VCCI-2, Nordic Safety, SAA (TM) and OVE certification. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
