IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 MODEL 35 SX (8535-040, 043) IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 MODEL 35 LS (8535-24X) IBM Announcement Letter Number 191-075 dated June 11, 1991 IBM US - Last Revised on June 11, 1991 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) Model 35 SX utilizes the 80386SX microprocessor operating at 20MHz with zero to two wait states and has the following integrated functions: parallel port, serial port, pointing device port, video graphics array (VGA 16-bit) port, keyboard port, 1.44MB (million bytes) diskette drive support, Math Co-Processor socket, and three single in-line memory module (SIMM) sockets (two available for memory expansion). The PS/2 Model 35 SX is a 3-slot 2-bay system and is offered in diskette only (040) and a 40MB fixed disk model (043). All models have 2MBs of memory standard on the system board (expandable to 16MB). The PS/2 Model 35 LS provides a small footprint and low priced, general business solution. The Model 35 LS provides a local area network (LAN) workstation solution and is available with all the standard features of the Model 35 SX, with the following exception: No DASD devices are installed in this "medialess" system, but a 16/4 Token-Ring adapter with RIPL occupies one of the three adapter slots. The PS/2 Model 35 SX is fully upgradeable to the Model 35 SX configurations. Both the PS/2 Model 35 SX and 35 LS support the IBM Enhanced Keyboard (101/102 keys), Space Saving Keyboard (84/85 keys) or the IBM Host Connected Keyboard (122 keys). The system memory is expandable to 16MB; the 40MB fixed disk model allows the user to run the simplest of programs to more complex business application programs requiring the OS/2 (R) operating system. The Model 35 SX or 35 LS can be used either as a stand-alone workstation or in a local area network (LAN). The customer has the ability to configure the Models 35 SX and 35 LS with 5.25-inch devices and upgrade the LAN station with standard IBM and non-IBM adapters and DASD solutions. BUSINESS SOLUTIONS The IBM PS/2 Models 35 SX and 35 LS offer considerable flexibility in configuration and feature function. Diskette drive models, fixed disk models and LAN station solutions allow the 8535 to reside as a viable workstation in most customer environments. The low price, small footprint and expandable attributes provide the customer with entry level solutions such as data entry, or with a platform for specialized end-user programs such as data base management, spread sheet or LAN management. The affinity of the 8535 to the 3270 environment via its front of screen characteristics and 122-key keyboard allow growth from an enterprise workstation environment to an enterprise LAN environment (increasingly reliant on PC applications). INVESTMENT PROTECTION Based on the 20Mhz 80386SX microprocessor, the PS/2 Models 35 SX and 35 LS can be considered a long-term, reliable system solution. The Models 35 SX and 35 LS support a wide range of IBM and non-IBM programs, applications, I/O devices, features and accessories: DOS, OS/2, Novell, 3.5-inch and 5.25-inch diskette drives, and DASD devices. (Refer to the List of Supported Products attachment for additional information.) The IBM PS/2 Model 35 LS (24X) is fully upgradeable with all of the DASD and adapter cards available on the standard models (8535-040, 043). Additionally, the LAN station is an excellent platform for configurations not available in the base models (5.25-inch diskette drives and other devices). The IBM PS/2 Models 35 SX and 35 LS all have a 3270 affinity to the 3270/MFI (Main Frame Interactive) environment, not previously available in IBM's personal computer or PS/2 families. This design point provides an excellent value to the data processing manager of an enterprise. The Model 35 SX and 35 LS are alternatives to the dependent display solutions currently available. Little to no retraining is required because the front of screen will resemble that of the data terminal, and the 122-Key Keyboard is modeled after the data terminal keyboard. The host applications are presented to the end user as they were on the data terminal. The additional value of personal computer applications into this host-connected environment is beneficial in protecting the customer's investment. Refer to Product Announcement 191-267, dated June 11, 1991, for more information on this solution. Models 35 SX and 35 LS offer considerable expansion capability via the new mechanical package. GROWTH ENABLEMENT The PS/2 Models 35 SX and 35 LS support the customer's requirements to enhance feature function of a workstation by providing a platform flexible enough to accommodate 16MB of memory on the system board, and a variety of diskette, fixed disk and other devices. The 8535 system unit is designed with two DASD bays capable of accommodating 5.25-inch devices. As new DASD devices are brought to market, they are often in this physical package prior to being reduced to a 3.5-inch size. The performance and expansion capability of the 8535 allows either DOS, DOS Windows or OS/2 operating systems to be resident in this system. The customer interested in a low priced, small footprint solution will be impressed with the upgradeability of the 8535 and will recognize it as a sound business investment. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT Because the PS/2 Model 35 LS is "medialess," systems management is a benefit to the user. System security is improved because data cannot be removed via a diskette at the workstation. Software and data files are stored at the server, providing one central facility for maintenance and backup. Consistent software program levels and data files may be maintained for all users on the server. Additional security features such as passwords and the ability to select the IPL source improve control of system usage. The cover lock and bolt down features help prevent theft of the system and options. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
