IBM 5494 REMOTE CONTROL UNIT Contents Announcement Letter Number 192-037 dated February 18, 1992 US - Last Revised on February 18, 1992 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The IBM 5494 Remote Control Unit is available in two models, 001 and 002. Both models offer function that exceeds the current 5394 Remote Control Unit. While offering increased function, the 5494 will not be a replacement for the 5394, but an addition to the product line. The MODEL 001 manages the operation of up to 28 twinaxial-attached workstations and allows the workstations to communicate with an AS/400 (R) system. This communication is handled through a Type 2.1 connection. In addition to the functions of the Model 001, the MODEL 002 also provides support for two token-ring configurations: o Communicates with an AS/400 over a token-ring network while supporting up to 28 twinaxial devices o Supports token-ring attached devices while communicating with an AS/400 over an SDLC, X.21 or X.25 connection. In this configuration, the 5494 supports up to 40 devices of which up to 28 can be twinaxial attached, and the remainder token-ring attached. Planned Availability Date: March 27, 1992. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o Supports up to 28 twinaxial devices on four twinaxial ports on Model 001 and up to 40 devices on Model 002 (including 28 twinaxial devices) in remote token-ring gateway mode o Has user-friendly configuration using personal computers or PS/2 (R) systems o Provides twinaxial device attachment to an AS/400 via an IBM 5494 attached to a token-ring o Supports all 5394 native mode workstation and communication functions plus token-ring connectivity to an AS/400 o Provides (both models) EIA 232D (V.24/V.28), V.35 and X.21 interfaces for attachment to analog, digital, packet-switched and circuit-switched networks using communication cables with auto-wrap capability for network problem isolation (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. DESCRIPTION BUSINESS SOLUTIONS With the emerging growth of token-ring installations, the need for workstation communications with the host via token-ring attachment is increasing. The 5494 Remote Control Unit is designed to meet this need. In a wide area network (WAN) environment, when the 5494 Model 002 is installed as a token-ring gateway, the devices on the token-ring can communicate with a remote AS/400 and the token-ring gateway will support Generic Alerts to the connected AS/400. Concurrently, the 5494 Model 002 can also support direct attachment of other twinaxial devices for communications with the same AS/400. The 5494 in this mode can support up to 40 workstations in any combination with the number of directly attached twinaxial devices not exceeding 28. In local and remote environments, the 5494 Model 002 can be attached to a token-ring network directly connected to an AS/400. In this mode, up to 28 twinaxial workstations can be attached to the 5494 for communications with the AS/400. The token-ring on the Model 002 supports speeds of either 4 or 16 megabits per second. INVESTMENT PROTECTION The IBM 5494 Remote Control Unit Model 001 can support up to 28 twinaxial devices. In a local area network (LAN) environment, the 5494 Model 002 when attached to a token-ring will support up to 28 twinaxial devices. When acting as a remote gateway, it can support up to 40 devices (includes up to 28 twinaxial devices). When the business environment requires a token-ring connection, the Model 001 can be upgraded to a Model 002. Each model of the 5494 can support several different interfaces such as EIA 232D, CCITT V.24/V.28/V.35, and CCITT X.21, depending upon the type of communication cable used. When migration is desired from one interface type to another, only the communication cable needs to be changed. These communication cables can be ordered as accessories. The 5494 supports communication speeds up to 64 kilobits per second (kbps) when attached to a CCITT X.21 or V.35 interface, and up to 19.2 kbps when the attachment interface is EIA-232D or CCITT V.24/V.28. GROWTH ENABLEMENT The 5494 Model 001 Remote Control Unit enables a customer to attach up to 28 twinaxial devices, and the 5494 Model 002 can support up to 40 devices when acting as a remote token-ring gateway. Thus, the device cluster sizes in a 5494 can be increased from a small cluster to a large cluster to meet the increase in business demands. Additional feature slots and memory offer the opportunity for expanding function in the future. While the footprint is approximately the same as the 5394, the 5494 can handle more workstations per controller reducing floor space needed. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT The reliability and availability characteristics of the IBM 5494 Remote Control Unit aid in higher system availability. The operator panel design of the 5494 provides direct access to the 5494 for diagnostic data and assists in faster problem determination and isolation. The 5494 can be easily configured using a personal computer or a PS/2. The personal computer or the PS/2 used for configuring a 5494 need not be attached to a 5494, making it possible to set up the 5494 configuration on a 3.5-inch diskette without actually requiring a 5494. The 5494 provides automatic communications link cable wrap any time the 5494 is powered on or extended diagnostics are run. USER PRODUCTIVITY Help text screens are provided to assist configuring a 5494 for AS/400 communication using a personal computer or a PS/2. During operation, the 5494 recognizes any changes to its device attachment status (removal or addition of a device) and automatically reconfigures itself without operator intervention. PRODUCT POSITIONING The 5494 Remote Control Unit facilitates workstation communications with an AS/400 system. The 5494 Model 001 offers all the native mode workstation functions of the 5394 and, in addition, the Model 002 offers token-ring connectivity. The Model 002 supports remote workstations attached to a token-ring for communications with an AS/400, thus acting as a gateway to the AS/400. Alternatively, the Model 002 can connect to the AS/400 through a token-ring network to provide access to twinaxial workstations for communications with the AS/400. The 5494 Model 001 supports up to 28 directly-attached twinaxial devices. The Model 002, when acting as a remote gateway, can support a maximum of 40 devices (combination of both direct and token-ring attached) for communications with an AS/400. The 5494 attaches to telecommunication networks via EIA 232D, CCITT V.24/V.25/V.35, or CCITT X.21 physical interfaces and using SDLC, X.21, and X.25 protocols at speeds up to 64 kbps when attached to a CCITT X.21 or V.35 interface and up to 19.2 kbps when using an EIA 232D, CCITT V.24/V.28 interfaces. The 5494 Model 001 is upgradeable to the Model 002. The 5394 Remote Control Unit continues to be available for those AS/400 customers not requiring the additional features of the 5494, or for customers who need a control unit for remote workstations to communicate with an IBM System/36, System/38 or AS/Entry. STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION IBM intends to provide support for attaching a 5494 to an SNA subarea network. This support, when offered, will further enhance the connectivity feature of the product. Announcement of this feature will be based on IBM's technical and business judgment. IBM intends to provide support for the 5494 consistent with the workstation support announced by AS/400 on February 18, 1992. Announcement of this support will be based on IBM's technical and business judgment. PUBLICATIONS The following publications are shipped with the product.
