It does this by automatically sensing the speed of the system's floppy controller and adjusting the tape format accordingly -- QIC-3010 (340MB native capacity) for a 500Kbs controller or QIC-3020 (680MB native capacity) for a 1Mbs or 2Mbs controller. While all stated capacities assume use of a MC03000XL data cartridge, this device also works with a MC-3000 data cartridge at reduced capacities. This approach provides users of systems with 500Kbs controllers with competitive backup capacity and ensures a growth path to higher capacity/performance if the decision is made to upgrade the system's floppy controller. Performance Specifications: This chart helps explain the relationship between the capacity/performance of the Internal Tape Backup Kit and the floppy controller speed of the host system. MC 3000XL MC 3000XL Floppy No Typical Controller Backup Rates Compression Compression Speed (MB/Min) Capacity Capacity 500 Kbs 4.8MB/min 340MB 680MB 1 Mbs 9.5MB/min 680MB 1360MB 2 Mbs 19.0MB/min (read) 680MB/ -- 1360MB Software Driver Support OS/2 2.0, or later DOS 5.0, or later (with DOS backup software ordered separately) Windows 3.1, or later Compatibility: The 680/1360MB Internal Tape Backup Kit is compatible with QIC-3020, QIC-3010, and QIC-80 recording formats. The 680/1360MB Internal Tape Backup Kit supports 500Kbs, 1Mbs, and 2Mbs diskette drive controllers. Limitations: DOS backup software is not shipped with the option kit. If you want a DOS version of the backup software, use the ordering instructions included in the kit. Cable Requirements: The system diskette cable is used. Mounting Requirements 7546: PS/2 Installation Kit (#1140, PC Co. #11H1140). 7585: 5.25-inch Bay Removable Media Kit (#6300, part number 06H7934) for mounting in the 5.25-inch bay or 3.5-inch bay mounting kit (#6163, part number 06H2300) for mounting in the 3.5-inch bay. 7590: No additional mounting kit required. IBM Quiet Touch Keyboard with TrackPoint II (#6505, Part Number 06H8735, PC Co. #84G2524) The IBM Quiet Touch Keyboard with TrackPoint II (in black) is a rubber-dome technology keyboard in a space saver format (85 keys). Numeric key functions are achieved by the double use of alphabetic keys in the center of the keyboard. TrackPoint II, a pointing device that eliminates the need for a mouse, is built into the keyboard. The pointing device is located between the G, H, and B keys. The keyboard frame has two buttons below the spacebar that work like the buttons on a mouse. The keyboard plugs into the keyboard and mouse ports of the system. System orders for the 7585 or 7546 can reference this feature as the selected keyboard, or it can be ordered as a second keyboard. IBM LANStreamer MC 16 Adapter (#8998, PC Co. #74G0801) Performance Specifications 16 million or 4 million bits per second (Mbps). Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) or IBM Cabling System media. Device drivers shipped with adapter. Remote Program Load (RPL) is standard with the adapter. Multiple group address (MGA) support allows the user to configure group addresses to be able to send information to particular stations, similar to the multicasting capability provided by Ethernet environments. The LANStreamer MC 16 Adapter is the recommended adapter for MC bus clients operating in an OS/2 environment, since it provides better performance than the Auto 16/4 Token-Ring MC Adapter in this environment. Device Driver Support OS/2 and DOS NDIS workstation and server drivers NetWare 3.1 server driver and Open Data-Link Interface (ODI) workstation drivers that support NetWare 3.1 and 4.0 Cable Requirements: A customer-supplied attachment cable is required by this feature to attach to the Token-Ring Network. The Token-Ring Network PC Adapter Cable (#3390, PC Co. #6339098) can be ordered for customers desiring shielded twisted pair wiring. Customers desiring unshielded twisted pair wiring can use UTP cabling for attachment to the Token-Ring Network. The UTP cable must have an RJ-45 connector on one end for the adapter. The other end of the cable should have the appropriate connector for attachment to the customer's wall outlet. A customer-supplied wrap plug is required to test the UTP connection. The wrap plug can be ordered from IBM, part number 72X8011. PRODUCT POSITIONING The new features offer functional advantages compared to similar features previously available.
