IBM 7552 INDUSTRIAL COMPUTER MODEL 540 Contents Announcement Letter Number 187-224 dated November 3, 1987 US - Last Revised on November 3, 1987 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The IBM 7552 Model 540 provides a standard 20Mb fixed disk drive. Disk storage capacity can be expanded to 41.44Mb by adding an optional second 20Mb Fixed Disk Drive (#6083) and a 1.44Mb, Diskette Drive (#6071). This new model provides for IBM 3278/79 and 5250 emulation and maintains compatibility with all existing IBM 7552 hardware and software products. Effective February 5, 1988, the 7552 Industrial Computer Model 140 and Disk/Diskette Adapter Module (#6080) are being withdrawn from marketing. The 7552 Industrial Computer is based on a high-performance, 16/24 bit, 10 MHz Intel 80286 microprocessor, and 512Kb of memory standard. System memory may be further expanded with memory card and 512Kb memory options. A single disk/diskette module is available on the 7552. The Disk/Diskette Module option is a pluggable module and occupies two slots in the system unit. Up to two 20Mb Fixed Disk Drives and one 1.44Mb High-Capacity Diskette Drive are available within the Disk/Diskette Module. The maximum configuration will result in a direct access storage capacity of up to 41.44Mb. IBM Operating System/2 and DOS 3.3 support the 20Mb Fixed Disk Drives and 1.44 Mb high-capacity Diskette Drive in the 7552 system. The 7552 Model 540 contains five option (feature) slots that support feature adapters for devices, features, or memory. The IBM 7552 Industrial Computer contains two cooling fans. An optional filter package is available to extend the particulate specification of the 7552. The Model 540 includes a standard keyboard which offers commonly used data and word processing functions along with separate typewriter and numeric keypads. Key-locations, enhancements, and mode indicators (Cap Lock, Numeric Lock, Scroll Lock) improve keyboard usability. Special symbols may be accessed with a combination of keys. Depending on the application program, from 10 to 40 special function keys may be supported. The keyboard is attached to the 7552 via a 10-foot coiled cable, permitting a variety of workspace configurations. An optional Display Mounting Kit (#6025) provides all necessary hardware components to mount the IBM 5532 or 7534 Industrial Graphics Displays in a standard 19-inch rack that is 22 to 30 inches in depth. The 7552 is supported by the IBM Operating System/2 and DOS 3.3 operating systems. The 7552 also supports four IBM PC software languages. These languages are: o BASIC compiler version 2.0 o 'C' version 1.0 o Macro Assembler version 2.0 o PASCAL version 2.0 The following IBM program products provide language extensions for four PC software languages: o 5601-136 -- in support of Operating System/2 o 5601-052 -- in support of DOS The language extensions are in the form of subroutine calls to support the unique functions of the 7552 that are not a part of other IBM Industrial Computers. These unique functions are: o Orderly shut-down following a power failure o Orderly start-up following power-on o Error detection and notifying the application software of the errors o Enabling and disabling the error notification functions. o Displaying coded messages on the two character hexadecimal display of the processor o Setting and resetting a digital output point provided by 7552 for activation of external alarms o Reading the position of the 7552 key-lock switch for system security protection. When Operating System/2 is used, the following minimum system configuration is required: o 7552 Model 540 o Additional 1.5Mb memory (for a total memory of 2.0Mb) o The 1.44Mb Diskette Drive o Enhanced Graphics Adapter (#1200) o Either an IBM 5532 or 7534 Color Display For information on the minimum configuration required to run Operating System/2 on the 7552 Models 040 and 140 refer to IBM Programming Announcement 287-494, dated November 3, 1987. When DOS operating system is used and the 7552 is configured without diskette, keyboard, or display another IBM Industrial Computer configured with keyboard, display, and diskette is required to be used as a remote terminal to load programs and to provide an operator interface for the 7552. A Remote Terminal Interface (#6078) is required to connect the Industrial Computer to the 7552. #6078 is an adapter that is installed in an IBM Industrial Computer (5531, 7531, 7532, 7552). It provides an interface to connect that IBM Industrial Computer (used as the remote terminal) to the 7552 through the keyboard port on the 7552. IBM program product 5601-053 provides program utilities to support the RTI functions. NEW FEATURES FOR THE 7552 The following special features are announced today for the 7552 Industrial Computer: 1.44MB DISKETTE DRIVE (#6071): Allows one 1.44Mb diskette drive to be added to the 7552 . If this feature is to be installed in a 7552 Model 140 or 040 configured with the Disk/Diskette Module (#6080), the Disk/Diskette adapter must be changed to the new version of the adapter. The new version of the Disk/Diskette adapter can be purchased by ordering RPQ #PF1077. To install #6071 on the 7552 Model 040, #6180 is required. 20MB FIXED DISK DRIVE (#6083): Adds one 20Mb Fixed Disk Drive to the 7552. On the 7552 Model 040, feature (#6180) is required. On the Model 540, one 20Mb Disk Drive is standard. DISK/DISKETTE ADAPTER MODULE II (#6180): Allows disk and/or diskette capability on the 7552 Model 040. Included in this module are the Disk/Diskette adapter card and the Disk/Diskette shroud. Up to two Fixed Disks (any combination of 10Mb (#6082) and 20Mb (#6083)) and one 1.44Mb Diskette Drive (#6071) can be installed in the Disk/Diskette Module. The Disk/Diskette Module II is a standard feature of the 7552 Model 540. FLOOR MOUNT KIT WITHOUT KEYBOARD (#6192): Provides hardware to mount the 7552 in the floor mount position with provision to bolt the system unit to the floor. KEYBOARD RACK MOUNT HARDWARE WITHOUT KEYBOARD (#6193): Provides hardware to mount the 7552 keyboard in a standard 19-inch rack. The following features which are already announced as supported features on other IBM products, are now supported on the 7552. ADVANCED 3278/79 EMULATION ADAPTER (#5050): A circuit card that plugs into any one of the expansion slots in the 7552 system unit. A cable receptacle mounted on the card provides for attachment of a customer-supplied coaxial cable, IBM Cabling System media (3274 attachment only), or telephone twisted-pair via IBM/ROLM Coax-to-Twisted-Pair Adapter at the bottom of the system unit. Most, but not all, functions of the emulated displays are supported. The Adapter provides host communications support via 3278/79 emulation. When used with the IBM PC 3270 Emulation Program Entry Level or IBM equivalent, the 7552 can emulate the functions of an IBM 3278 Display Station Model 2 or an IBM 3279 Color Display Station Model 2A or S2A with certain restrictions and can support file transfer with certain host systems. Both the host-controlled 3270 session and a local IBM Disk Operating System (DOS) session can be active concurrently and the user can interact with either session alternatively. The 3270-PC File Transfer Program (5664-281 for Virtual Machine/System Product (VM/SP), 5665-311 VSE/SP 2.1.1, 2.1.2, or SSX/VSE 1.4.1, or IBM equivalent) is required for file transfer. File transfer to the 4700 system is not supported. The following are additional highlights of the Advanced 3278/79 Emulation Adapter: - Distributed function terminal mode operation -- Allows distribution of 3270 data stream processing from the control unit to the 7552 and allows implementation of advanced capabilities such as multiple concurrent 3270 sessions. Requires corresponding capability in the upstream node (available with the IBM 3274 Control Unit) and in an IBM Personal Computer 3270 Emulation program (available with 3270-PC Control Program). Additional information is available in the IBM Personal Computer 3278/79 Emulation Adapter Technical Reference for the Advanced Adapter. - Low power usage - Attachment of the 7552 to: -- IBM 3274 Control Unit -- Display/Printer Adapter on an IBM 4321, 4331 or 4361 Processor -- IBM 4701 Finance Communication Controller - No host hardware or host system software modifications required for 3270 emulated functions. - Supports attachment to the 3274 via the IBM 3299 Terminal Multiplexer. ENHANCED DISPLAY STATION EMULATION ADAPTER (#2911): Provides direct attachment of the 7552 to the IBM System/34, IBM System/36 and IBM System/38, using the IBM Enhanced 5250 Emulation Program Version 2.12. It can attach remotely via the IBM 5251 Display Station Model 12. The 7552 will emulate the 5250 workstation family displays and printers. The 7552 can also be attached to the System/36 or System/38 remotely via the IBM 5294 Remote Control Unit. The Adapter is a printed circuit card that is installed in one of the 7552 expansion slots. The integrated attachment cable for connecting the adapter to the twinaxial line (line termination resistors are part of the cable assembly), an Installation and Problem Determination Procedures Manual, and a 5-1/4 inch diskette containing diagnostic programs are also available. The diagnostic programs can only be loaded through another Industrial Computer equipped with a 5-1/4 inch diskette drive connected to the 7552 via the Remote Terminal Interface (#6078). The design of the circuit card allows the industrial computer to establish one or two sessions with the System/34, System/36 and System/38. Host device address(es) are set under program control. The Enhanced 5250 Emulation Installation Convenience Kit (#2910) includes all parts, software and manuals required to install the Enhanced Display Station Emulation Adapter and Enhanced 5250 Emulation Program Version 2.12 in the 7552. For more information, see IBM Announcement 287-025, dated February 3, 1987. IBM PC NETWORK ADAPTER II (#1220): A feature card which connects the 7552 to the broadband IBM PC Network. This adapter is designed to take advantage of greater Intel 80286 processing speeds. The IBM PC Network Adapter II supports the NETBIOS interface and the 802.2/Logical Link Control (LLC) protocols via the IBM Local Area Network Support Program (83X7873). This allows the adapter to take advantage of the same protocol and interface as the original IBM PC Network. Feature #6187 provides the advanced diagnostics for this adapter. For more information, refer to IBM Announcement Letter #187-079, dated April 2, 1987. IBM PC NETWORK BASEBAND ADAPTER (#1221): A feature card which connects the 7552 to the baseband IBM PC Network. It is designed to take advantage of greater Intel 80286 processing speed. The adapter supports the NETBIOS interface and the 802.2/Logical Link Control (LLC) protocols via the IBM Local Area Network Support Program (83X7873). This allows the adapter to provide access to broadband IBM PC Network and IBM Token-Ring Network applications written to the NETBIOS or APPC/PC interface. If sensitive data is sent over external communication facilities, user management may wish to pursue the application of cryptography. The S/ECC will give the customer instructions on how to obtain hourly service. CENTRAL FACILITY MAINTENANCE SERVICE: Yes, the minimum number of machines required to be at the central facility before requesting maintenance service is one machine. The additional maintenance charge factor is currently 0.5 hour. The terms and conditions are stated in the Amendment for Central Facility Maintenance Service (Z125-3333) and its supplement (Z125-3334). PRODUCT AVAILABILITY STATUS: New product available.
