IBM 7552 INDUSTRIAL COMPUTER ENHANCEMENTS Contents Announcement Letter Number 189-154 dated October 24, 1989 US - Last Revised on October 24, 1989 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The announced enhancements to the IBM 7552 Industrial Computer improve system storage and through-put capability and provide support for improved communications. The enhancements can be installed on existing 7552 Models in customer locations. Increased fixed disk capacity and reduced disk access time provide for more effective operation with large programs. In addition, the 7552 Industrial Computer now supports the latest IBM Token-Ring Local Area Network (LAN) products. These enhancements are recommended where program and system growth are needed or anticipated. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. DESCRIPTION NEW HARDWARE FEATURE 42MB DISK DRIVE The new 42MB fixed disk drive (#6536) more than doubles the capacity of the largest drive previously available on the 7552. This new drive also reduces the access time from approximately 80ms to 25ms. The 42MB Disk Drive is plug compatible on all models of the 7552 GEARBOX (TM) system. The new disk drive is supported under OS/2 and PC DOS (Version 3.3 or later) operating systems. Installation of the 42MB drive will require running the system setup to identify the newly installed drive type. The 42MB Disk Drive is available as a field-installed feature only. Current Model 540 systems will continue to be shipped with a 20MB Disk Drive. If a new system is desired with only the 42MB Disk Drive, the Model 040 should be ordered, along with the Disk/Diskette Adapter Module II (#6180) and the number of 42MB Disk Drives desired (up to two per system). SYSTEM CONFIGURATION NEEDS FOR INSTALLATION: The 42MB Disk Drive is compatible with all models of the 7552 Industrial Computer, either as an addition or as a replacement for a current disk drive. Each of the available disk drive features (10, 20, or 42MB) comes with the necessary cabling for installation. o Model 540 Any Model 540 system will accept the new 42MB Disk Drive without further modification. The new drive can be installed along with an existing 20MB Disk Drive, or an existing 20MB Disk Drive can be removed and replaced with the new 42MB Disk Drive. Up to two drives can be installed in any combination of 20 or 42MB units. (If desired, 10MB Disk Drives (#6082) are also compatible with the Model 540.) The system will need to be reconfigured through the normal setup procedure to enter the identity of the new drive. o Model 040 Model 040 systems require that a Disk/Diskette Adapter Module (#6080), or a Disk/Diskette Adapter Module II (#6180) be installed on the system. If #6080 has previously been installed (this feature was withdrawn as of February 5, 1988), then the information for the Model 140, below, applies. If Disk/Diskette Adapter Module II (#6180) is installed, then the information for the Model 540, above, applies. The system will need to be configured through the normal setup procedure. o Model 140 The Model 140 was withdrawn from marketing on November 3, 1987, effective February 5, 1988. (Refer to Product Announcement 187-224, dated November 3, 1987.) Any Model 140 system will accept the new 42MB Disk Drive without further modification. The new drive can be installed along with an existing 10MB Disk Drive, or an existing 10MB Disk Drive can be removed and replaced with the new 42MB Disk Drive. Up to two drives can be installed in any combination of 10 or 42MB units. (20MB Disk Drives (#6083) are also compatible with the Model 140.) The system will need to be reconfigured through the normal setup procedure. SUPPORT TO EXISTING FEATURES AND PROGRAMS The following existing features and program products are now supported on the 7552 Industrial Computer: o IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter (#7367) (Refer to Product Announcement 188-203, dated November 14, 1988, for information on this feature.) Notes: - The Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter will not support shared interrupts with any other adapter installed in a 7552 system. - This adapter must be ordered against machine type 7552, Model 040 or 540, if it is intended to be used in the 7552 system. Ordering against the 7552 will assure that the correct diagnostic code required for use of this adapter in the 7552 will be provided with the adapter. Adapters ordered in any other manner will not be accompanied by the proper diagnostic code for use in the 7552 system. - RPQ PF1183, RFI Filter Kit, should be ordered for installation with this adapter. This is a 'no-charge' RPQ which provides clip-on ferrite filters. RFI filters are required to assure that FCC Class A requirements are met. - IBM Token-Ring Network Remote Program Load (#8881), for use with the #7367 Adapter, is not supported at this time. o IBM Token-Ring Network Personal Computer Adapter II (#9858) (Refer to Product Announcement 188-204, dated November 14, 1988, for information on this feature. This replaces a previous level (#5063) which has been withdrawn.) Notes: - The Token-Ring Network PC Adapter II will not support shared interrupts with any other adapter installed in a 7552 system. - RPQ PF1183, RFI Filter Kit, should be ordered for installation with this adapter. This is a 'no-charge' RPQ which provides clip-on ferrite filters. RFI filters are required to assure that FCC Class A requirements are met. - IBM Token-Ring Network Remote Program Load (#7839), for use with the #9858 Adapter, is not supported at this time. o IBM Token-Ring Bridge Program -- Version 2.0 and 2.1 (Refer to Product Announcement 288-638, dated November 14, 1988, for additional information about these products.) - Version 2.0 -- Program Number 16F0492 Bridges 4MBps and 16 MBps Token-Ring networks. - Version 2.1 -- Program Number 16F0493 Bridges remote Token-Ring networks via leased lines. o IBM Realtime Interface Co-Processor Multiport/2 (1MB Memory) (#6247) (Refer to Product Announcements 188-166, dated September 20, 1988, and 189-048, dated April 4, 1989, for information on this feature.) Support of this adapter on the 7552 Industrial Computer is limited to and requires the following RPQs. Support is provided only under the OS/2 operating system. - 16-bit Micro Channel (TM) Adapter (RPQ PF1120) This RPQ provides the mechanical/electrical interposer card for interfacing the Multiport/2 Adapter to the 7552 Backplane. - 7552 Multiport/2 Adapter Support -- OS/2 (RPQ PF1144) This RPQ includes customer instructions (with defined limitations) and two 3.5-inch diskettes containing the software needed to provide for setup and diagnostic loading for the Multiport/2 Adapter in a 7552 system. - RFI Filter Kit (RPQ PF1183) This RPQ must be ordered for installation with this adapter.
