IBM 7694 PERSONAL SCIENCE LABORATORY ENHANCEMENTS AND STATEMENT OF DIRECTION Contents Announcement Letter Number 192-066 dated March 24, 1992 US - Last Revised on March 24, 1992 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The 7694 Personal Science Laboratory (TM) (PSL (TM)) has four added features: Digital Input/Output (DIO) Module, Digital Multimeter (DMM) Module, Rotary Motion and Photo Event Probes. The new probes require the DIO Module for attachment while the DMM Module can attach directly to the 7694 base unit. The Rotary Motion Probe separate accessory kit extends its capabilities. The DIO Module has two types of adapters. The DIO Cable Adapter has a 34-pin flat cable adapter for experimental use. The DIO Telephone Jack Adapter has two jacks for attaching the Rotary Motion and Photo Event Probes. Planned Availability Date: September 4, 1992. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o Allows students to analyze, explore and ask 'what if' questions, by using the computer to make measurements in new areas o Provides students and teachers the ability to solve experimental problems by doing real-time data collection, graphing and analyses with curricular emphasis on development of process skills and problem solving o Attaches to and complements existing PSL hardware with accuracy that creates a new standard for education: - 1/4 degree rotational accuracy for Rotary Motion Probe - One microsecond timing accuracy for Photo Event Probe - 4 1/2 digit measurement accuracy for Digital Multimeter Module. DESCRIPTION BUSINESS SOLUTION The PSL hardware provides the students and teachers the ability to perform a variety of additional scientific experiments. USER PRODUCTIVITY With the ability to demonstrate new experiments using the additional PSL features, the customer can use the PSL system for performing new data collection, analysis and scientific studies. INVESTMENT PROTECTION The PSL hardware is designed to use previously purchased PSL hardware and educational materials. The value of new hardware will increase since the customers can perform additional science related activities. GROWTH ENABLEMENT The hardware allows the experienced customer to benefit from enhancements and builds on their existing hardware. PRODUCT POSITIONING The Personal Science Laboratory is used to gather data on external events and save, manipulate and graph this data. The features being announced provide a much broader base of capabilities and application, and build on the previously announced PSL product offering. With the addition of both analog and digital input and digital output, many experiments such as process control, robotics control and fast event timing are now possible. These features fill out the capability of the PSL system and make it more competitive with others now in the market place. STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION IBM intends to develop an enhanced version of PSL Explorer software that performs the functions of PSL Explorer Version 1.0 and supports the new PSL modules and probes announced today. It is IBM's intent to offer a LAN upgrade option for PSL Explorer Version 1.0 LAN licensees. Announcement of this enhanced version will be based on IBM's business and technical judgement. PUBLICATIONS There are no publications shipped with the announced product. The following Users Guide and Technical Reference manuals for each feature are available for purchase: FEATURE DESCRIPTION NUMBER DIO Module Users Guide and technical Reference 0023 Rotary Motion Users Guide and Technical Reference 0024 Photo Event Users Guide and Technical Reference 0025 DMM Module Users Guide and Technical Reference 0026 The Personal Science Laboratory Fact Flyer (G544-3308) will be available by April 1, 1992.
