Before using the Fax Utility, copy the utility program diskette onto your hard disk that contains DOS. See the Operating Instructions manual for more details. Usage Notice - General ---------------------- - The Fax Utility assumes the configuration files and font files are in the current directory. If you want to use the Fax Utility in another directory, you can set a DOS environment variable to instruct the Fax Utility to use the particular directory such as: SET FAX=C:\FAX Adding this statement to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file is recommended. - If the message "UNABLE TO FIND MODEM ON COM1(2)" appears, even though the MODEM is configured correctly, use the PS2.EXE to turn the MODEM power off-and-on to correct the error. - Some fax systems have a specified out value for calling. If the IBM PS/2 Model L40 SX does not respond to a call within this specified time, then the fax system goes into the redial mode. Set your system auto-off time to six minutes or longer to succeed connection. - On the FAX OPTION menu screen, enter the value for the "Number rings" desired to wait before a FAX call is answered. Usage Notice - OS/2 Users ------------------------- - This utility runs only in the DOS full screen command mode. It is recommended that you keep this session as your foreground session during fax operations. Usage Notice - Microsoft Windows Users -------------------------------------- - This utility is not a Windows application, therefore when used in a Windows environment, you must use the FAX.PIF file provided with this information. To use the PIF file: 1. Go to the Program Manager. 2. Press and hold ALT then type f to select File option. 3. Move the cursor with the arrow key then press Enter to select New option. 4. Move the cursor with the arrow key then press Enter to select Program Item. 5. Type any comment such as FAX in the description box. 6. Press TAB to move the cursor to Command line box. 7. Type C:\FAX\FAX.PIF if you have installed FAX utility programs in the directory named C:\FAX. Then press Enter. 8. An icon named with your description will appear. 9. Select the icon with the arrow key and press Enter to run the FAX utility program. 10. Type the parameters in the parameters box, then press Enter. 11. You can now run the FAX utility by just selecting the FAX icon, typing the parameters, and then press Enter. - In this environment the Fax Utility cannot receive data directly from the other party to a diskette. - It is recommended that you keep the session running this utility as your foreground during performing fax operations.
