Standard features on the 8570-A21 are: o 1.44MB, 3.5-inch diskette drive o Keyboard port o Pointing device port o Serial/asynchronous port o Parallel port o Video Graphics Array (VGA) port. The VGA port supports graphics modes including 640 x 480 pels in 16 colors and 320 x 200 pels in 256 colors, and text modes including 720 x 400 pels in 16 colors (9 x 16 character box). The VGA port maintains compatibility with Color Graphics Adapter (CGA) and Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA) modes. The fixed disk drive has a capacity of 120MB. The controller is integrated with the drive so that a slot is not required for the controller. The 120MB drive has an average access time of 23 milliseconds. The Compatibility BIOS (CBIOS) with memory addressability of up to one megabyte provides compatible support for current application programs. An additional version of BIOS, Advanced BIOS (ABIOS), provides support for multitasking operating systems and has extended memory addressability up to 16MB. The high level of feature integration on the system board reduces the requirement for optional adapters. Memory on the system board can be expanded to 8MB. The optional 80387 Math Co-Processor provides enhanced performance in arithmetic calculations. In addition, the system is designed for tool-free installation and includes security features in BIOS/CMOS and an external keylock. Additional features of the system unit include three I/O slots (two 32-bit bus slots and one 16-bit bus slot with video extension), a 132-watt automatic voltage-sensing power supply, a time and date clock with battery backup, an additional position for a second 3.5-inch diskette drive, and the IBM Enhanced Personal Computer Keyboard. NEW FEATURES IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 2MB MEMORY MODULE KIT--80NS (#5214) (6450608): The 2MB Memory Module Kit--80ns provides 2MB of 80 nanosecond memory. The 2MB Memory Module Kit--80ns is for use on the 8570-A21 only. Three kits can be installed on the system board of the 8570-A21 to reach the maximum system board memory of 8MB. The 1MB and 2MB Memory Module Kits--85ns should not be used on the 8570-A21 system board. Also, the 2MB Memory Module Kit--80ns is not for use on the 2-8MB 80386 Memory Expansion Option. IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 80387 MATH CO-PROCESSOR--25MHZ (#6320) (6450607): The 80387 Math Co-Processor provides additional processing power and performance for application programs requiring many or repetitive arithmetic calculations. The 80387 runs at 25MHz and is for use on the 8570-A21 only. The 80386/80387 conforms to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) floating-point standard and runs most applications, written for the 80286/80287 and 8086/8087 based systems, unmodified. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The 8570-A21 is designated as customer setup. CABLE ORDERS: There are no cabling requirements, other than for system power and display connections. Cables are provided with the system unit, display, and keyboard. The instructions are provided as part of initial setup. INSTALLABILITY: By following the setup instructions, the user attaches the keyboard and peripherals and inserts the Reference Diskette. Power is then turned on and Set Configuration is run after the computer has successfully completed its initial self-tests. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: If a failure is found at initial installation, an instruction will appear on the screen. If the test is successfully completed, the system attempts to load an operating system from the A drive. If an operating system is not found, the system attempts to load one from the C fixed disk drive. If an operating system is not found, the user will be prompted to insert a diskette via an icon. A final default is provided through the use of a ROM-loaded BASIC interpreter as explained in the Quick Reference manual. PACKAGING: The 8570-A21 is packaged in two separate cartons.
