IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 MODEL 70 386 (081, 161, A81 AND A16) IBM Announcement Letter Number 191-079 dated June 11, 1991 IBM US - Last Revised on June 11, 1991 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability New models of the Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) Model 70 386 (8570- 081, 161, A81 and A16) system units address a wide range of customer needs and enhance the PS/2 family of systems with additional standard memory and enhanced fixed disks. All of these models have 4MB of standard memory and a 32-bit microprocessor with the capability of supporting up to 16MB of high-speed real memory. The 80386 processor models 081 (80 million bytes/20MHz), 161 (160 million bytes/20MHz), A81 (80 million bytes/25MHz) and A16 (160 million bytes/25MHz) enhance ESDI files and support the addition of an 80387 optional Math Co-Processor, which offers significantly improved system performance for a desktop environment. The Models PS/2 70 386 8570-A81 and A16 can be upgraded to the 25MHz i486 processor by the installation of the 486/25 Power Platform (refer to Product Announcement 189-102, dated June 20, 1989). These models are appropriate for advanced users who perform numeric-intensive applications requiring floating-point operations, large processing intensive applications or applications requiring high-performance fixed disks. DESCRIPTION BUSINESS SOLUTIONS The PS/2 Model 70 386 support the customer's business objectives by providing a cost-effective solution for a variety of compute-intensive business applications and numeric-intensive engineering/scientific applications. Models with the 80386 microprocessor provide the 32-bit compatibility required by many customers. The Micro Channel architecture offers fast, efficient and reliable data flow with a large selection of optional adapters. The PS/2 Model 70 386 with optional features and compatible operating systems and applications provide solutions for a wide range of applications. The 8570 and other systems of the PS/2 family can provide a total client server system solution. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT The following features of the PS/2 Model 70 386 make these models well suited for customers who require business solutions that simplify systems management. o Standard PS/2 Micro Channel architecture o Easy-to-install system and options o Hardware and software compatible with the wide range of existing non-IBM applications o System cover lock and power-on lock. INVESTMENT PROTECTION The high degree of compatibility of the PS/2 Model 70 386 protects customer investments in PS/2 hardware and software. An extensive list of Micro Channel options are supported. The PS/2 Model 70 386 (8570-A81, A16) can be upgraded to 486 processor when additional computational power is required. Various operating system and compatible software are supported. (Refer to the List of Supported Products attached to this announcement.) GROWTH ENABLEMENT The PS/2 Model 70 386 supports application development and growth through expansion features. The standard 4MB of system memory may be expanded up to 16MB. The PS/2 Model 70 386 (081 and 161) can be configured for 6MB memory on the system board. The PS/2 Model 70 (8570-A81) can be configured for 8MB memory. One available 16-bit and two 32-bit Micro Channel slots in the PS/2 Model 70 386 are options for additional applications. The PS/2 Model 70 386 (8570-A81, A16) can be upgraded to the 486 processor when additional computational power is required. USER PRODUCTIVITY The PS/2 Model 70 increases user productivity by providing a 32-bit microprocessor for improved computing performance when compared to 8- and 16-bit microprocessors. The highly reliable workstation (without media) improves the availability to the user of the workstation. The system is easily installed because the LAN adapter, either the 16/4 Token-Ring Adapter or the Ethernet Adapter, as well as other features such as keyboard port and keyboard, pointing device port, Video Graphics Array (VGA) port, serial port and parallel port are supplied with the system. An additional 256KB is reserved for system use in systems with 16MB memory. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The 8570 is designated as customer setup. CABLE ORDERS: There are no cabling requirements, other than for system power, keyboard and display connections. Cables are provided with the system unit, display, and keyboard, and the instructions are provided as part of initial setup. INSTALLABILITY: By following the setup instructions, the user attaches the keyboard and peripherals and inserts the reference diskette. Power is turned on and set configuration is run after the computer has successfully completed its initial self-tests. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: If a failure is found at initial installation, an instruction will appear on the screen. If the test is successfully completed, the system attempts to load an operating system from the A drive. If an operating system is not found, the system attempts to load one from the C fixed disk drive. If an operating system is not found, the user will be prompted to insert a diskette via an icon. A final default is provided through the use of a ROM-loaded BASIC interpreter as explained in the Quick Reference manual.
