IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 MODEL P70 386 (8573-061 AND 8573-121) IBM Announcement Letter Number 189-074 dated May 9, 1989 IBM US - Last Revised on May 9, 1989 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) Model P70 386 (8573-061 and 8573-121) are high-function, high-performance portable systems that complement the PS/2 Model 70 386 desktop family of products. The PS/2 Model P70 386 is a 20MHz version in both models, one with a 60Mb fixed disk and the other with a 120Mb fixed disk. These models include Micro Channel (TM) Architecture, a Video Graphics Array (VGA) 16-grayscale plasma display, and a fully compatible PS/2 Enhanced Keyboard, all integrated into a single package. Additional features are the 80386 32-bit microprocessor, high-density memory technology, and a wide range of integrated features. These portable systems support up to 16Mb of high-speed real memory, 60Mb or 120Mb of disk storage, full VGA graphics, and an optional 80387 Math Co-Processor, and have significant performance for portable computer operations. All models maintain compatibility with most existing software products for IBM personal computer systems. The 8573-061 and 8573-121 provide 20MHz 80386 performance with 4Mb of high-speed (85ns) memory and a 60Mb and 120Mb fixed disk respectively. An External Storage Device Cable is available for attaching external backup devices and diskette drives. Two carrying cases are available as accessories. IBM is announcing the following Statement of Direction: The Model P70 386 (8573-061 and 8573-121) will be supported by a future release of the Advanced Interactive Executive Personal System/2 (AIX (TM) PS/2). The availability date of this release will be announced third quarter 1989. (R) Registered trademark of the International Business Machines Corporation. The PS/2 Model P70 386 features a 20MHz 80386 microprocessor with 4Mb high-speed memory, both models expandable to 16Mb with memory options. The 8573-061 and 8573-121 come standard with a 60Mb and 120Mb fixed disk drive respectively, with integrated controller. Both models come standard with: o 1.44Mb, 3.5-inch diskette drive o Pointing device port o Serial/asynchronous port o Parallel port o Video Graphics Array (VGA) port o External Storage Device port. The external port is the equivalent of the B drive internal diskette port on the PS/2 Model 70. This permits attachment of externally powered devices like the IBM 4869 External Diskette Drive Model 001 and some other equipment manufacturers' backup devices. The VGA port supports all VGA graphics and text modes including 640 x 480 graphics, 320 x 200 graphics in 256 colors, and 720 x 400 text using any optional PS/2 VGA color display, and maintains compatibility with Color Graphics Adapter (CGA) and Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA) modes. The PS/2 Model 70 has fixed disk drives with a capacity of 60Mb or 120Mb and an integrated controller. CAPACITY 60MB 120MB Bytes/Sector 512 512 Sectors/Track 26 32 Cylinders 762 920 Number of heads 6 8 Data transfer rate 8.4M bps 10.2M bps Average access time 27ms 23ms Sector interleave 1:1 1:1 The system has two levels of BIOS that total 128Kb. The Compatibility BIOS (CBIOS) with memory addressability of up to 1Mb provides compatible support for current application programs. An additional version of BIOS, Advanced BIOS (ABIOS), provides support for multitasking operating systems and has extended memory addressability up to 16Mb. The high level of feature integration on the system board reduces the requirement for optional adapters. Memory on the system board can be expanded to 6Mb or 8Mb. The optional 80387 Math Co-Processor provides enhanced performance in arithmetic calculations. The system is designed for tool-free installation and includes security features in BIOS. Additional features of the system unit include: o One general purpose 32-bit full-length Micro Channel slot (1) o Half-length Micro Channel slot that can be used for products such as the IBM PS/2 300/1200/2400 Internal Modem/A (2) (#1755) o 85-watt automatic voltage-sensing power supply o Time and date clock with battery backup o Integrated 16-grayscale plasma display o An integrated version of the IBM Enhanced Personal Computer Keyboard. A new cable (#2716) (23F2716) is available for attaching appropriate external backup devices and diskette drives. The cable features Hoshiden connector to attach to the P70 with an industry standard 37 pin D Shell connector that connects to the external powered devices. The length of the cable is 35.5cm (14 inches). Two carrying cases are available as accessories. (1) Some half-length cards that fit into a half-length slot may not fit into a full-length slot. (2) Refer to Product Announcement 189-075, dated May 9, 1989.
