IBM PS/2 SERVER 85 (9585-0XG) IBM Announcement Letter Number 193-207 dated July 13, 1993 IBM US - Last Revised on July 13, 1993 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The PS/2 (R) Server 85 (9585) was introduced September 21, 1992, to complement IBM's premium line of PS/2 Servers and enhance IBM's leadership position in the client/server market. The new PS/2 Server 85 model (9585-0XG) is an addition to the 9585 family of low-cost servers and features the following improvements: o Larger, faster hard disk -- 540MB (million bytes), a 35% improvement in storage capacity when compared to the previously announced 400MB model o Improved reliability with IBM ECC-P (Error Checking and Correcting-Parity) Technology that provides memory error detection and correction utilizing low-cost parity SIMMs. Even though the PS/2 Server 85 systems are designed primarily as LAN servers, they can also function as high-performance, technical workstations where processor performance, SVGA graphics, system expansion flexibility, and large amounts of data storage are required. The IBM PS/2 Premium Server 85 Network Solutions, announced May 25, 1993 (Product Announcement 193-142), are now offered with the new 540MB 9585-0XG in place of the 400MB 9585-0XF. Because of IBM's continued commitment to improve product reliability, the premier PS/2 product line, including all 9585 models, carries an on-site, three-year warranty. However, an optional one-year warranty is available via special bid. These systems are supported by the Select-a-Keyboard option. This program allows customers to choose from a wide selection of IBM keyboard types when placing new system orders. Single Unit Price: $4,835 (9585-0XG). Planned Availability Date: July 23, 1993. IN BRIEF . . . o ECC-P memory support o 540MB disk model -- up to 8.54GB of hard file storage o PS/2 Premium Server 85 Network Solutions now offered with the 540MB model o Intel (1) 486SX-33Mhz processor o Second processor socket for IBM PS/2 486-33/66 Microprocessor Upgrade Option o Three-year, on-site warranty o Advanced Micro Channel (R) exploitation that includes 40MB/s data streaming o 8MB standard memory -- expandable to 64MB on the system board o SVGA-NI Display Adapter providing flicker-free operation at VGA resolution o Enhanced SCSI with Cache integrated on the system board o Five internal storage device bays supporting 5.25-inch half-high drives and two 3.5-inch half-high drives o Eight 32-bit Micro Channel expansion slots (one used for SVGA-NI Display Adapter) o Complies with International Standards Organization ISO 9241, Part 3 Customer Letter Section DESCRIPTION The new PS/2 Server 85 system (9585-0XG) contains a 540MB SCSI hard disk as a standard feature. This feature allows customers to store and retrieve larger capacities of data, faster than the 400MB hard disk model being replaced. Customers benefit from increased productivity brought about by improvements in throughput and investment protection from obsolesce. INVESTMENT PROTECTION All PS/2 Server 85 models are based on IBM's Micro Channel architecture, providing compatibility with a wide range of existing Micro Channel hardware and software applications. The enhanced performance functions, 32-bit DMA, Vital Product Data, System Control Block, Error Checking and Correcting-Parity (ECC-P) and 40MB data streaming support exploit the advanced capabilities of IBM's Micro Channel architecture. The PS/2 Model 85 mechanical platform provides up to seven file storage bays. Two 3.5-inch bays are used for the 2.88MB Diskette Drive and the standard SCSI hard disk drive. Four available 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch bays can accommodate four more SCSI disk drives providing expansion of up to 8.5GB of storage in the 9585-0XG model (two 2GB SCSI Hard Disk Drives and three 540MB SCSI Hard Disk Drives). Various device combinations of 3.5-inch, with or without removable media, and 5.25-inch, half- or full-high form factors, can be installed providing a high degree of flexibility in storage configurations. A total of eight 32-bit Micro Channel I/O slots are provided (one slot is used for the SVGA-NI Display Adapter). The remaining seven slots are available for future expansion and growth. PRODUCT POSITIONING The PS/2 Server 85 was announced September 21, 1992, and is positioned to replace the PS/2 Model 80. This new PS/2 Server 85 Model 9585-0XG features a 540MB hard disk drive and is positioned to replace the 400MB hard disk drive PS/2 Server 85 Model 9585-0XF. Featured on all PS/2 Server 85 Models is IBM ECC-P Technology that provides improved memory reliability using matched pairs of standard low-cost parity memory SIMMs. The PS/2 Model 85 package introduced with the 8595 models allows high levels of system expansion with generous offerings of expansion slots and DASD bays. The PS/2 Model 85 combines the power of the 486SX-33MHz processor with multiple IBM technology leadership functions, and high-capacity data storage, to form balanced performance systems, specifically designed for LAN printer and file server applications. Even though these systems are designed primarily as LAN servers, they can also function as high-performance, technical workstations where processor performance, SVGA graphics, system expansion flexibility, and large amounts of data storage are required. When used in conjunction with IBM's new 95XX Color Displays, the standard SVGA-NI Display Adapter provides enhanced ergonomic benefits in the form of reduced screen flicker at SVGA resolution and 256 colors. All systems maintain compatibility with a wide range of operating systems and software applications for the PS/2. PUBLICATIONS The following publications are shipped with the PS/2 Server 85.
