IBM SCSI-2 FAST/WIDE ADAPTER/A AND IBM 2.0GB FAST/WIDE SCSI-2 HARD DISK DRIVE IBM Announcement Letter Number 193-294 dated September 20, 1993 IBM US - Last Revised on September 20, 1993 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability IBM SCSI-2 Fast/Wide Adapter/A, a high-performance SCSI-2 Fast and Wide (16-bit SCSI bus) adapter capable of 20MB/second SCSI bus data transfer rates, provides an interface to PS/2 (R) SCSI Options. The adapter supports a 40MB/second Micro Channel (R) streaming data rate. Tagged Command Queuing increases performance in DASD-intensive server environments. Two independent SCSI buses improve security and support longer external cable lengths. The drive should be considered for additional growth when fast seek times and additional capacity are critical. The 2.0GB Fast/Wide (2,000 million bytes, #7128, 32G3796) drive enhances the SCSI-2 family of storage options by providing high capacity and exceptional performance. The 2.0GB Fast/Wide SCSI HDD is supported in the following Micro Channel systems: o 8590/95* (internally) o 9585/90/95* (internally) o 3510-0V0 (externally). This is a very cost-effective solution for the server environment. With the IBM SCSI-2 Fast/Wide Adapter/A dual bus: o Internal DASD cannot be accessed from the external port o Maximum cable lengths can be calculated individually per bus o Additional external capability. Upgrades are available from your service representative by referring to RETAIN (TM) Tip #H12996. Remarketers should contact their Technical Support Group. Determining SCSI-2 compatibility with your model 8590 or model 8595 computer. NOTE: This information is for Model 8590 or Model 8595 users only. The processors in some of the early Model 8590 and Model 8595 computers do not allow use of the full functions of the SCSI-2 adapter, because the system programs do not have the BIOS support for those functions. However, with the correct version of the system programs, and an EPROM upgrade, the SCSI-2 adapter will function properly. To determine what version of the system programs is in your computer, do the following: 1. Turn on all attached devices; then, turn on the computer. 2. Gain access to the system programs. If you are not sure how to gain access to the system programs, refer to the documentation that came with your computer for complete instructions. 3. When the main menu of the system programs appears, select Display Revision Levels and press enter. (In some versions of the system programs, Display Revision Levels is found under More Utilities.) Write down the submodel byte code of the computer and the revision level of the system programs. (On the screen, the revision level of the system programs is shown as Revision Level under the Model and Submodel Byte Code fields.) 4. The following table specifies the required revision level of the system programs needed to support the SCSI-2 adapter. In the table, find the submodel byte code and type number of the processor board in your computer and make a note of them. .------------+------------+-------------+------------. | Model 8590 | Model 8595 | Processor | | | Submodel | Submodel | Board | Required | | Byte | Byte | Type | Revision | | Code | Code | Number | Level | |------------+------------+-------------+------------| | 2F | 2E | Type 1 | 05 or 5 | |------------+------------+-------------+------------| | 11 | 14 | Type 1 | 05 or 5 | |------------+------------+-------------+------------| | 13 | 16 | Type 1 | 05 or 5 | |------------+------------+-------------+------------| | 2B | 2A | Type 1 | 05 or 5 | |------------+------------+-------------+------------| | 2D | 2C | Type 1 | 05 or 5 | |------------+------------+-------------+------------| | 57 | 58 | Type 2 | 05 or 5 | |------------+------------+-------------+------------| | 59 | 5A | Type 2 | 05 or 5 | |------------+------------+-------------+------------| | 5B | 5C | Type 2 | 05 or 5 | '------------+------------+-------------+------------' If your Model 8590 or Model 8595 computer submodel byte code is not listed in the table, then the SCSI-2 adapter will work in your computer without any upgrade to the system programs. Continue to the next page to determine your next action. 5. Refer to the following table to determine your next action. .-----------------------------------+------------------------. | Level of Your System Programs | Action | |-----------------------------------+------------------------| | If the revision level of your | Go to "Determining your| | system programs is equal to or | EPROM Level". | | greater than 05 or 5, then the | | | SCSI-2 adapter will work in your | | | computer. | | |-----------------------------------+------------------------| | If the revision level of your | Go to "Getting the | | system programs is less than 05 or| Reference Diskette | | 5, then you need to get the latest| Package". | | version of the Reference Diskette | | | package. | | '-----------------------------------+------------------------' GETTING THE REFERENCE DISKETTE PACKAGE If you registered your computer when you purchased it, you might have received Reference Diskette upgrades as they became available. If you received them, but did not install them, install the latest revision now and make sure that the Revision Level on the Display Revision Level screen is equal to or greater than 05 or 5. If you have not received Reference Diskette updates, or if the revision you have is not equal to or greater than 05 or 5, contact your place of purchase, your IBM representative or call 800-845-4263. NOTE: You must install the latest version of the Reference Diskette before installing the SCSI-2 adapter. Be sure to have the following information ready when you call: o The model of your computer (Model 8590 or Model 8595). o The Type Number of your processor board, which can be found in the table on page 2. You will need this information so that you can receive the correct Reference Diskette package for your computer. When finished, go to "Determining your EPROM Level". DETERMINING YOUR EPROM LEVEL To determine if you need an EPROM upgrade, look for the EPROM on your processor board inside your computer. For information on how to remove your processor board, refer to the documentation that came with your computer. If the year dated on the EPROM is 1992, or later, you do not need an EPROM upgrade. If the date on the EPROM is earlier than 1992, you will need to get an EPROM upgrade. NOTE: You must install the latest version of the Reference Diskette, and install the EPROM upgrade, before you can install the SCSI-2 adapter. To get an EPROM upgrade or more information about an EPROM upgrade, contact your place of purchase, your IBM representative or call 800-772-2227. If you have to get a Reference Diskette upgrade or an EPROM upgrade, you cannot install the SCSI-2 adapter at this time. Store the adapter in a safe place until you receive your upgrades. If you already have the latest level of Reference Diskette and EPROM, continue with the installation instructions. SYSTEM SUPPORT -- 2.0GB FAST/WIDE SCSI-2 DRIVE: This drive is supported internally in the 8590/95 and 9585/90/95 systems configured with IBM SCSI-2 Fast/Wide Adpater/A. The 2.0GB drive is a 16-bit (Wide) drive and requires a SCSI-2 Adapter capable of handling Wide and Narrow (8-bit) drives. IBM SCSI-2 Fast/Wide Adapter/A has this capability. NOMINAL OPERATING CURRENT: It is possible to shutdown the system if the total amount of nominal operating current required exceeds the available current of the power supply in the PS/2 system or 3511 External DASD enclosure. The following chart lists the nominal operating currents for many of the devices that can be installed in a Model 8595, 9585/95 or 3511 Storage Enclosure.
