IBM Auto 16/4 Token-Ring MC Adapter Operates With Micro Channel Computers January 26, 1995 Announcement Number: 195-002 The IBM Auto 16/4 Token-Ring MC Adapter is a high-performance token-ring LAN adapter designed to operate with a Micro Channel(R) architecture (MC) bus computer. It supports operation at either 16 million or 4 million bits per second (Mbps) over unshielded twisted pair (UTP) or shielded twisted pair (STP) media. It is the recommended adapter for MC bus clients operating in a DOS or Windows+ environment. The Auto 16/4 Token-Ring MC Adapter is fully compatible with and replaces the current IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter/A, and offers the following enhancements: * Automatic ring speed selection determines and sets the proper ring speed (16Mbps or 4Mbps), simplifying installation and reducing network downtime. * UTP (with on-board filters) and STP media with a single RJ-45 connector supported, simplifying installation. * External status light-emitting diodes (LEDs) make it easy to determine adapter and ring status without disrupting operation. * Device drivers for many of today's leading operating and network operating systems, such as DOS, OS/2(R), and Novell** NetWare**. * DOS transport modules for DOS 802.2 and NetBIOS applications. * Full-duplex-enabled(1) for future growth. Single Unit Price: $435 Planned Availability Date: February 17, 1995 (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation + Trademark of Microsoft Corporation ** Product or company name is a trademark or registered trademark of its respective holder. (1) The Auto 16/4 Token-Ring MC Adapter provides hardware support for full-duplex token-ring technology. This certification ensures customers that high-quality design and development processes were used to develop this product. Open Enterprise: The Auto 16/4 Token-Ring MC Adapter conforms to: * Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.5 * European Computer Manufacturer's Association (ECMA) 89 Version 3.12, 1992 (BCPR Services, Inc.) PRODUCT POSITIONING The new Auto 16/4 Token-Ring MC Adapter is the recommended adapter for MC bus clients operating in a DOS or Windows environment, since it typically requires less host memory than the IBM LANStreamer(TM) MC 16 Adapter in these environments. It is also the recommended adapter for systems running the IBM Token-Ring Network Bridge program. The Auto 16/4 Token-Ring MC Adapter is fully compatible with and replaces the current Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter/A and Token-Ring 16/4 MC Adapter. The Auto 16/4 Token-Ring MC Adapter also includes DOS transport modules that provide the functions of the IBM LAN Support Program for DOS 802.2 and NetBIOS environments, for a maximum of one adapter per machine, and requires less host memory. The current LANStreamer MC 16 Adapter is the recommended adapter for MC bus clients operating in an OS/2 environment, since it provides better performance than the Auto 16/4 Token-Ring MC Adapter in this environment. The current Auto LANStreamer MC 32 Adapter, IBM's highest-performing MC bus adapter, is recommended for MC bus servers, high-end MC bus clients operating in an OS/2 environment, or systems running the LANStreamer Token-Ring Bridge Program.
