Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o Increased DASD capacity for application growth on all models o IBM 3900 Printer, IBM 3828 MICR Printer, and IBM 6252 Impactwriter o More options for high-speed printing with one to four channel-attached printers o AIX PS/2 and VSE/SP support BiProcessor Data Exchange Adapter o Channel-to-channel option. DESCRIPTION Business Solutions The increased number of High Speed Printer Adapters combined with support for new printers, makes the Micro Channel 370 an attractive solution for high quality and high volume print requirements. Full function Advanced Function Print (TM) (AFP (TM)) solutions may be located where they are needed, stand-alone or networked. Supported printers include a variety of 370 channel-attached printers, coax-attached 3270 family printers, and selected parallel and serial (RS-232 and RS-422) supported printers. The newest additions to the supported printers are: the IBM 3900 Printer, the IBM 6252 Impactwriter, the IBM 3828 MICR Printer, and the ASCII models of the IBM 6262. The IBM 3900 Printer is IBM's highest volume page printer. When combined with AFP software, it supports applications ranging from traditional high-volume printing to new sophisticated data and graphics applications. The Micro Channel 370 with a single IBM 3900 attached is an attractive solution to very high-volume printing requirements for text pages, or text pages with small images. The IBM 3828 MICR Printer provides Magnetic Ink Recognition (MICR) printing used by the finance industry. Banks, insurance, and utility companies may use it for printing checks, bank control documents, remittance documents, and pre-authorized drafts. In any industry it may be used to print payroll checks. The check form itself, the amount, and the signature can all be printed in one step for increased security. A Micro Channel 370 with a 3828 printer and an attached tape drive may be located remotely by companies that need remote printing of checks but do not wish to use communication networks for transmission of financial data. The 6262 Impact Printers supported on the Micro Channel 370 include coax-attached models, 370 channel-attached models, and now the parallel and serial interface models (A12, A14, and A22). The 6262 printers offer excellent print quality and reliability with models at 1200 lines per minute (LPM), 1400 LPM, and 2200 LPM rated speed. The 6252 Impactwriter is an economical 800 LPM impact printer supported on the standard serial and parallel ports of the Micro Channel 370 as well as on the optional 3270 adapters and optional 8-port adapters. New support for the BiProcessor models of the Micro Channel 370 provides new opportunities. DATAEX/VSE (5799-DWY) provides VSE programming interfaces to the Data Exchange Adapter feature for coprocessing with OS/2 (R), DOS or AIX PS/2. A BiProcessor with DATAEX/VSE might be used to provide an integrated system for applications that require co-processing between environments. For example, an existing VSE application such as COPICS and a PS/2-based application, such as data collection might be linked. AIX PS/2 support adds another option for openness from the System/370 to the expanding UNIX environment. AIX PS/2 access to VM or VSE is provided by a new AIX PS/2 low level interface included with the Data Exchange Adapter. The programming interface allows memory to memory exchange of data between VM and AIX PS/2 or VSE and AIX PS/2, opening the way for sophisticated new applications. The RPQ (S0198) for Channel-To-Channel (CTC) Attachment via the IBM 3088 supports direct attachment to a System/370 or a System/390 (TM) system. The CTC connection allows more options for exploiting the programmable communications or the BiProcessor capabilities of the Micro Channel 370 in a large system environment. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. GROWTH ENABLEMENT Support for the broad range of channel-attached printers provides granular growth options for high-speed printing. Attachment of up to four channel-attached printers allows the flexible selection of both impact and page printers. Support for a single IBM 3900 might allow the replacement of one or more older, less reliable printers to meet increasing print requirements. The External Storage Enclosure (3511-003) may be used to provide additional DASD capacity for greater growth of customer applications and data on all models of the Micro Channel 370. INVESTMENT PROTECTION All the support and features in this announcement may be ordered for any installed model of the Micro Channel 370. The announcement of support for external DASD for all models of the Micro Channel 370 enhances investments made in existing installations. All models of the Micro Channel 370 (010, 012, 014, 110, 112, and 114) can attach the External Storage Enclosure (3511-003) to gain additional DASD capacity. The enclosure supports up to seven 320MB DASD or 2.2GB of additional storage. The 320MB DASD option is the only option on the External Enclosure (3511-003) supported by the Micro Channel 370. Customers with existing 3420 drives may take advantage of the 3420 Tape Attachment RPQ (S02082) to attach a single tape drive for low-cost system backup or for 1/2-inch tape interchange between systems. The Model 114 BiProcessor with the VSE-PS/2 Data Exchange Program (VSE/DATAEX) PRPQ may allow Series/1 (TM) customers to continue to use existing Series/1 application investment while taking advantage of VSE and CICS for new applications. With its communication options, battery backup, and support for remote operation and management, the Micro Channel 370 offers an attractive upward growth path for Series/1 customers. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT Support for high-volume printers can lessen the burden of peak printing requirements at month-end and year-end. Supporting multiple High-Speed Printer Adapters per system, gives greater flexibility in configuring systems. Both high speed page and line printers may be selected to meet different application requirements. Attachment of multiple channel-attached printers allows backup printers to be configured to support critical print applications. Some customers may find the Micro Channel 370, itself, a convenient, low-cost backup system for critical applications on larger systems. Customers with existing 3420 tape drives may take advantage of the Single 3420 Tape Attachment RPQ (S02082) to attach a single tape drive for system backup or to use 1/2-inch tape reels for data exchange with either System/370 or System/390 processors.
