DESCRIPTION The RISC System/6000 POWERstations/POWERservers 520 and 530 are powerful new multi-user, multitasking, numeric-intensive computer systems combining high function, expansion capabilities and outstanding price/performance. POWERstations and POWERservers have the same processing, memory and media characteristics. However, system units designated as POWERstation 520 and POWERstation 530 contain one or more customer ordered graphic adapters. The RISC System/6000 POWERservers and POWERstations are multipurpose, deskside systems for the commercial and scientific environments. Utilizing IBM's POWER Architecture, the POWERstations/POWERservers 520 and 530 address the customer's multitasking and computer file server requirements. The system units contain a power supply, SCSI Fixed Disk Drive, diskette drive, operator panel and the Central Electronic Complex (CEC) consisting of the Central Processor Unit (CPU) Board, Input/Output (I/O) Board, and standard integrated I/O functions. Dedicated I/O processors are used on many of the high performance I/O adapters to enhance overall system performance. Reliability, availability and serviceability are key considerations in the design of the RISC System/6000 systems. CPU chips have data parity in their data paths and on internal arrays, CPU chip-to-chip data buses have parity, and the Micro Channel bus supports parity on some adapters. CPU chips implement a unique Built-In Self Test (BIST) to detect CPU errors during power-up. The memory subsystem is also tested extensively during power-up. The memory subsystem provides ECC (Error Correction Code) with detection of double bit errors and detection and correction of single bit errors. Bit steering is provided to automatically substitute a spare bit of memory for a faulty data bit or ECC bit. Bit scattering ensures a given memory chip contains no more than 1-bit of any word. Memory Control also supports hardware-assisted memory scrubbing for removal of soft failures. POWERSTATION/POWERSERVER 520 The POWERstation/POWERserver 520 features a 20MHz microprocessor chip set and 8MB of memory as standard. Up to a maximum of eight memory cards or 128MB of total system memory may be installed. Additional memory is available in 8MB or 16MB memory cards. As a select feature, with the initial plant order, the system unit can be configured with a 16MB memory card instead of the standard 8MB memory card. The CPU contains an 8KB two-way set-associative instruction cache and a 32KB four-way set-associative data cache. It also supports separate 64-bit memory to data cache, 32-bit fixed-point to data cache and 64-bit floating-point to data cache buses for fast data transfer between the CPU and memory for a balanced system performance. The CPU can execute concurrent fixed and floating-point instructions with the ability to have zero cycle branches. POWERSSTATION/POWERSERVER 530 The POWERstation/POWERserver 530 features a 25MHz microprocessor chip set and 16MB of memory (two 8MB memory cards) as standard. Up to a maximum of eight memory cards or 128MB of total system memory may be installed. Additional memory is available in pairs of 8MB or pairs of 16MB memory cards. As a select feature, with the initial plant order, the system unit can be configured with 32MB of memory instead of the standard 16MB of memory. The CPU contains an 8KB two-way set-associative instruction cache and a 64KB four-way set-associative data cache. It also supports separate 128-bit memory to data cache, 32-bit fixed-point to data cache and 64-bit floating-point to data cache buses for fast data transfer between the CPU and memory for a balanced system performance. The CPU can execute concurrent fixed and floating-point instructions with the ability to have zero cycle branches.
