IBM's POWER Architecture provides balanced system performance and greater connectivity capability. The POWERserver 930 also incorporates multiple distributed I/O processors to further enhance system performance by offloading the CPU I/O control processing of devices. These attributes, coupled with the AIX Version 3 for RISC System/6000 operating system and a variety of new input/output devices, help provide for extended function, fixed disk expandability and enhanced connectivity to support large server, gateway or multi-user applications. The POWERserver 930 base configuration consists of a 1.6 meter (63 inches) IBM rack enclosure. This modular packaging meets the EIA (Electronics Industries Standard) 310-C standard. Installed in the rack are the central processor unit (CPU) drawer, SCSI Device Drawer, power distribution unit and an immediate power off switch. The POWERserver 930 CPU drawer contains the CEC (Central Electronics Complex) that consists of a CPU board with a 25MHz processor chip set, 16MB of memory (two 8MB memory cards), I/O board with 1 SCSI adapter installed, two serial ports, one 5.25-inch Compact Disc -- read-only memory (CD-ROM), one 1.4MB 3.5-inch diskette drive, 460 watt power supply with cooling and the operator panel. One additional bay is available for mounting an optional CD-ROM drive, 5.25-inch diskette drive or a 1/4-Inch Tape Drive. The CEC contains an 8KB instruction cache and 64KB data cache. It also supports separate 128-bit memory to data cache, 32-bit fixed-point to data cache and 64-bit floating-point to data cache buses for fast data transfer between the CPU and memory for a balanced system performance. The CPU can execute concurrent fixed-point and floating-point instructions with zero cycle branches. Reliability, availability and serviceability are key considerations in the design of the RISC System/6000 family. CPU chips have data parity in their data paths and on internal arrays, CPU chip-to-chip data buses have parity, and the Micro Channel bus supports parity on some adapters. CPU chips implement a unique Built-In Self Test (BIST) to detect CPU errors during power-up. The memory subsystem is also tested extensively during power-up. The memory subsystem provides ECC (Error Correction Code) with detection of double-bit errors and detection and correction of single-bit errors. Bit steering is provided to automatically substitute a spare bit of memory for a faulty data bit or ECC bit. Bit scattering insures a given memory chip contains no more than 1-bit of any word. Memory Control also supports hardware assisted memory scrubbing for removal of soft failures. Additional memory may be installed in the CPU drawer up to a maximum of 128MB of total system memory. In addition to the one SCSI adapter in the CPU drawer which drives the 670MB Fixed Disk, CD-ROM and 2.3GB Internal 8mm Tape Drive, seven additional Micro Channel feature card slots are provided for expansion. The POWERserver 930 will support up to five SCSI adapters. The POWERserver 930 operator interface/controls located on the front panel consist of power ON and power Off push-button switches with POWER GOOD indicator, three seven-segment LEDs used for diagnostic feedback, a RESET pushbutton and a three position MODE switch. The POWERserver 930 SCSI Device Drawer is configured with a 670MB disk drive and one 2.3GB Internal 8mm Tape Drive. One additional 8mm tape drive and one additional 5.25-inch SCSI Disk Drive may be installed in the SCSI Device Drawer as an option. The adapter also provides a switching capability that allows the 5086 to bypass the RISC System/6000 system and utilize the applications that reside on the System/370. One Micro Channel card slot is used by this adapter. Only one 5086 or 5085 per system is allowed. 5085 ATTACHMENT ADAPTER (#2802): The 5085 Attachment Adapter provides two functions for the RISC System/6000 system. The adapter provides a direct connection to the IBM 5085 Graphics Processor from the RISC System/6000 system so that the 5085 can utilize the RISC System/6000 system based applications. The adapter also provides a switching capability that allows the 5085 to bypass the RISC System/6000 system and utilize the applications that reside on the System/370. One Micro Channel card slot is used by this adapter. Only one 5086 or 5085 per system is allowed. SYSTEM/370 HOST INTERFACE ADAPTER (#2800): The System/370 Host Interface Adapter is designed to work as either a high speed connection to the System/370 host for high speed file transfer or in conjunction with either the 5086 Attachment Adapter or the 5085 Attachment Adapter. The System/370 Host Interface Adapter (HIA) provides high speed file transfer between the RISC System/6000 system and the System/370 through a IBM 5088 Graphics Control Unit. Only one System/370 Host Interface Adapter per system is allowed. SOFTWARE PRELOAD (#5005): Certain AIX and licensed program software will be preloaded on the fixed disks when defined on the initial plant order. The preload option is available for the basic license only and is not for DSLO licenses. Refer to Programming Announcement 290-068, dated February 15, 1990, for detailed packaging and ordering information.
