DESCRIPTION BUSINESS SOLUTIONS The RISC System/6000 POWERserver 950 helps support the customer's business objectives by providing a high performance 41MHz rack-mounted server solution for numeric-intensive applications, multi-user commercial, or technical server applications. The POWERserver 950 and the AIX Version 3 for RISC System/6000 operating system conform to many of the industry standards in the open system environment -- a key factor to enable the customer to develop business and technical solutions. It has high performance, high capacity memory, and a wide selection of input/output devices and connectivity options combined with the flexibility of a rack-mounted package. The POWERserver 950 establishes a new plateau of performance for the RISC System/6000 rack-mounted servers. With IBM AIX Version 3 for RISC System/6000, application portability is maintained with the advantage of higher throughput levels. INVESTMENT PROTECTION The RISC System/6000 POWERserver 950 binary compatibility with previously announced RISC System/6000 systems helps to protect the customer's investment in applications and hardware. Model conversions utilizing the new processor are available. The POWERserver 930 can be converted to a POWERserver 950E. The conversion takes place in the customer's location with no change to existing application programs and minimum down time. To help protect the customer's investment, the migration of existing IBM fixed disks, IBM modem devices and IBM SCSI drawers are supported on the POWERserver 950E. The POWERserver 950 processor and the AIX Version 3 for RISC System/6000 operating system offer interoperability with other IBM and other vendor host systems, helping to protect the customer's principal investment. USER PRODUCTIVITY The POWERserver 950 with its 41MHz processor offers substantial performance gains over earlier rack-mounted RISC System/6000 processors. This helps enable the user to improve the throughput of a given task or add users to the network. A software preload feature is available to allow the user to IPL the system after initial hardware installation. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT A system installation and management facility is provided as part of the operating system. The System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) facilitates the performance of system management tasks, such as software installation and configuration, device configuration and management, problem determination and storage management. Support is also provided for the use of an ASCII terminal as the system console as well as remote installation of the system on a LAN. The IBM AIX Version 3 for RISC System/6000 operating system is designed to meet the National Computer Security Center (NCSC) Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria Class C2 Security Support Requirements. GROWTH ENABLEMENT The IBM RISC System/6000 POWERserver 950 is designed to grow with the customer's needs. The standard memory of 32MB can be increased in 16, 32, 64 and 128MB increments up to 512MB of system memory. Eight memory card slots are available to yield 512MB with eight of the 64MB memory cards. The internal disk drive capacity is expandable up to 11.9GB with 857MB standard. With the attachment of an IBM 7202 Model 900 Expansion Rack, the fixed disk capacity of the system can be expanded to 22.2GB. Seven Micro Channel feature card slots are available for additional features such as SCSI controllers and communication processors. An optional Asynchronous Expansion Drawer accommodates eight additional Asynchronous Adapters (8-port, 16-port, or 64-port). NOTE: MB is 1,048,576 bytes (two to the twentieth power) when referring to memory; in all other cases it is 1,000,000 (ten to the sixth power). GB is 1,073,741,824 bytes (two to the thirtieth power) when referring to memory; in all other cases it is 1,000,000,000 (ten to the ninth power). MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: The requirements for the IBM RISC System/6000 POWERserver 950 to be operated are: RISC System/6000 POWERserver 950 supported ASCII terminal as the system console, directly attached to the POWERserver 950. This terminal must be located within six meters (19.6 feet) of the system rack. The POWERserver 950 operators panel must be viewable from this terminal. PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: The current level of AIX Version 3 for RISC System/6000 systems, ordered separately, is a requirement for the operation of the POWERserver 950. COMPATIBILITY: The POWERserver 950 and POWERserver 950E uses the same external interfaces as the POWERserver 930. LIMITATIONS: o POWERserver 950 memory options must be ordered and installed in pairs: - 8 MB HD3 Memory Card (#4063) - 16 MB HD3 Memory Card (#4066) - 32 MB HD3 Memory Card (#4067) - 64 MB HD3 Memory Card (#4069). o The IBM RISC System/6000 POWERserver 950 supports only one of the following features in the base system rack: - POWERserver 950 Asynchronous Expansion Drawer (#6002) OR - POWERserver 950 1/2-inch 9-Track Tape Drive Drawer (#6140). Additional 1/2-inch 9-Track Tape Drive Drawers are supported in the IBM RISC System/6000 Expansion Rack. o Combinations of 8-Port and 16-Port Asynchronous Adapters (#2930, 2940, 2950, 2955, and 2957) up to a total of eight adapters per system, may be configured in the RISC System/6000 POWERserver 950. o Up to a maximum of eight 64-Port Asynchronous Controllers may be configured in a POWERserver 930, 950 and 950E system. MODEL CONVERSIONS: Customers with the RISC System/6000 POWERserver 930 will be able to convert their systems to the new POWERserver 950E. IBM fixed disk configurations supported by the POWERserver 930 upon announcement will be supported by the POWERserver 950E. All Micro Channel cards, external and internal devices supported by the POWERserver 950 and POWERserver 930 upon announcement will be supported by the POWERserver 950E. The POWERserver 950E requires a minimum of 32MB of memory. For POWERserver 930 systems that do not meet the minimum memory requirement of the POWERserver 950E, additional memory must be ordered. Memory may be ordered as an MES for the POWERserver 930 or included as part of the model upgrade order, but priced separately. Memory cards are available in pairs for the POWERserver 950E in memory increments of 16, 32, 64 and 128MB with a memory limit of 512MB (eight 64MB memory cards). The Model Conversion MES includes memory cards compatible with the new 41Mhz POWERserver 950 processor board for the conversion of the customer's existing memory. The memory configuration of the POWERserver 930 system must be specified on the model conversion order. The performance of the POWERserver 950E with the new processor and memory will be the same as that of an equivalently configured POWERserver 950 system. In instances where the customer elects to retain their existing 670MB SCSI disk drive as the base disk drive in the upgrade to the POWERserver 950E, the performance of the POWERserver 950E will be somewhat less than the POWERserver 950, which has a standard 857MB SCSI disk drive as the base disk drive. This offers a high degree of flexibility in increasing the performance level of the system and helping the customers to take advantage of the performance of the new processor while protecting their investment in fixed disks. The Model Conversion MES contains the following items and can be ordered by contacting your IBM marketing representative: o Processor replacement o Memory conversion (current memory configuration must be specified on the order) o New labels o Installation instructions o New diagnostics o New publications. NOTE: Parts removed become the property of IBM. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The following features are plant only installable on the POWERserver 950: o 32 MB HD3 Memory Select Feature (#4068) o 64 MB HD3 Memory Select Feature (#4070). CABLE ORDERS: To simplify the ordering process, a concept of predetermined device location within the rack enclosures is used. This results in a system being assembled in a predefined rack configuration. All interconnecting cables and filler panels are automatically added when the system is built at the plant. This eliminates the need to order these items separately. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: For problem analysis, the IBM RISC System/6000 POWERserver 950 diagnostic programs, pre-loaded on the system, provide console routines that lead a user through problem determination and helps provide direction to resolve problems.
