The 33MHz processor and 32MB high-speed memory of the 530H, with a 400MB disk drive coupled with the current wide variety of IBM input/output devices, graphics and communication features allows configuration of the system as powerful POWERstations or POWERservers for a wide range of business solutions. The 530H establishes a new plateau of mid-range RISC System/6000 deskside system performance. With AIX Version 3.1.5 for RISC System/6000, or subsequent release, application portability is maintained with the potential for higher throughput levels. The 530H and AIX Version 3.1.5 for RISC System/6000 operating system conform to many of the industry standards in the open system environment -- a key factor to enable the customer to develop business solutions. INVESTMENT PROTECTION The 530H's full binary compatibility with previously announced RISC System/6000 system protects the customer's investment in software as well as hardware. Model conversions utilizing the new processors are available. POWERstation/POWERserver 520 systems can be converted to processor and memory technology of the 530H (530E), and POWERstation/POWERserver 530H to 550 capability (550E). Conversions takes place in the customer's location with little or no change to existing application programs and limited interruption. To help protect the customer investment, existing IBM fixed disks and all currently supported IBM input/output devices and features of the POWERstation/POWERserver 520 are supported by the newly designated POWERstation/POWERserver 530E models. IBM input/output devices and features supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 530H are also supported by the newly designated 550E models. The POWERstation 530H supports AIXwindows (TM) Environment/6000, a graphical user interface (AIXwindows is based on the Open Software Foundation's OSF/Motif); resulting in savings in end-user training and application development. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. The POWERstation/POWERserver 530E and 550E processors along with the AIX Version 3.1.5 for RISC System/6000 (or subsequent release) operating system offer interoperability with other IBM and other vendor host systems, helping to protect the customer's principal investment. SYSTEM MANAGEMENT A system installation and management facility is provided as part of the operating system. The System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) facilitates the performance of system management tasks, such as software installation and configuration, device configuration and management, problem determination and storage management. Support is also provided for the use of an ASCII terminal as the system console and remote installation of a system on a LAN. The AIX Version 3 for RISC System/6000 is designed to meet the National Computer Security Center (NCSC) Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria Class C2 Security Support Requirements. USER PRODUCTIVITY The POWERstation/POWERserver 530H offers a substantial gain in fixed and floating point performance over the existing POWERstation/POWERserver 520 and 530 systems. This helps enable the customer to improve throughput of a given task. InfoExplorer (TM) support offers the user flexible access to online documentation using task index, hypertext jump points and search features. A software preload feature is available to allow the user to IPL the system after initial hardware installation with a minimum system subset. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. GROWTH ENABLEMENT The POWERstation/POWERserver 530H is designed to grow with the customer's needs. The standard memory of 32MB can be increased up to 512MB (eight 64MB memory features). The standard internal fixed disk of 400MB can be expanded up to 2.5GB (three 857MB disk drives) of internal storage, and up to an additional 23.9GB external storage with attachment of the four IBM 9333 Serial Model 500 Deskside Expansion Units (13.7GB), and three 9334 SCSI Model 500 Deskside Expansion Units (10.2GB) for a maximum of 23.9GB external storage and a total system maximum of 26.5GB storage. MODEL CONVERSIONS: POWERstation/POWERserver 520 customers will be able to convert their systems to the processor and memory technology of the new 530H (530E). POWERstation/POWERserver 520 fixed disks are supported by the 530E. POWERstation/POWERserver 530H customers will be able to convert their systems to 550 capability (550E). IBM fixed disk configurations supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 530H will be supported by the 550E. All Micro Channel cards, external and internal devices supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 520 and 530H will be supported by the 530E and 550E with the exception that the 800 MB SCSI Disk Drive (400MB pairs) (#2562) is not available on the POWERstation/POWERserver 530E. The POWERstation/POWERserver 530E requires a minimum of 32MB of HD3 memory (in pairs). The POWERstation/POWERserver 550E requires a minimum of 64MB of HD3 memory (in pairs). For POWERstation/POWER server 520 or 530H systems that do not meet the minimum memory requirements of the POWERstation/POWERserver 530E or POWERstation/POWERserver 550E, additional memory features must be ordered. Additional memory should be ordered by MES in conjunction with the POWERstation/POWER server 520 or 530H system model conversion order. Additional memory is priced separately. Memory cards must be purchased in pairs and are available in multiples of 8, 16, 32, and 64MB with a maximum of 512MB for the 530E or 550E. NOTE: The POWERstation/POWERserver 530E (530H) and 550E (550) processors are not compatible with IBM SD1 or HD1 memory. The model conversion MESs include HD3 memory cards which make the customer's existing memory modules compatible with the 33MHz 530H and 41MHz 550 processor boards allowing conversion of the customer's existing memory chips. Additional memory features #4008, #4016, #4032 and #4035 will be valid for the 530E and 550E but result in shipment of HD3 memory. HD3 memory features #4063, #4066, #4067 and #4069 are also valid for 530E and 550E. Model conversion offers a high degree of flexibility in increasing the performance level of the system and helping the customers with computation-intensive applications to take advantage of the performance of the new processor while protecting their investment in fixed disks. Performance of the POWERstation/POWERserver 530E and 550E relative to the new POWERstation/POWERserver 530H and 550 respectively will depend upon the installed fixed disks. Customers whose converted machine contains only IBM fixed disk configurations supported by the new POWERstation/POWERserver 530H or 550 should not experience performance degradation. Retention in the converted machines of IBM fixed disks not supported by the new POWERstation/POWERserver 530H or 550, will yield lower overall system performance relative to the new 530H or 550. Reduced performance may or may not be experienced depending upon the nature of customer's applications (computation-intensive versus I/O-intensive). The model conversion MESs contain some or all of the following items and is ordered through the HONE configurator: o Processor replacement o Memory conversion boards o As required engineering changes o New labels o Installation instructions o New diagnostics o New publications. NOTE: Parts removed become the property of IBM. The requirements to operate the POWERstation/POWERserver 530H, 530E or 550E are: o IBM supported ASCII terminal or an IBM supported display and keyboard. POWERservers must have a console. o AIX Version 3 for RISC System/6000 processors at the current level of release. Keyboards, displays and ASCII terminals are optional and should be ordered separately. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: All previously available features which are supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 530E and 550E are field installable.
