IBM RISC SYSTEM/6000 POWERSTATION/POWERSERVER 360 AND 370 Contents Announcement Letter Number 193-014 dated February 2, 1993 US - Last Revised on February 2, 1993 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The RISC System/6000 (R) POWERstation (TM)/POWERserver (TM) 360 and 370 extend the upper performance range of the RISC System/6000 desktop systems. The POWERstation/POWERserver 370 establishes a new plateau in performance for IBM's Superscaler-designed POWER* Architecture (TM)-based high-end desktop workstations with a 62MHz processor. The 360 has a 50MHz processor. These new systems also feature an enhanced cache architecture with a four times increase in the Instruction Cache buffer size to 32KB. This improves performance by increasing the number of cache hits between main memory and the Instruction Cache unit. The POWERstation/POWERserver 360/370 standard features include: 32MB of memory and 400MB of internal fixed disk for the 370, 16MB of memory and 400MB of internal fixed disk for the 360, an 80MB/sec Micro Channel (R), an integrated SCSI-1 adapter and an integrated Ethernet interface to provide additional function capabilities for IBM's POWER Architecture-based desktop workstations. Memory capacity of up to 256MB, internal fixed disk capacity of up to 2GB coupled with the current wide variety of input/output devices, graphics and communications features allow these systems to be configured as powerful POWERstations and POWERservers. In addition, the High-Performance Disk Drive Subsystem Adapter (80MB/sec) is available on the desktop 360/370 systems. Planned Availability Dates: o February 26, 1993, for systems and 340/350 to 370 model conversions (MES) o April 2, 1993, for features (MES) o April 30, 1993, for 360 to 370 model conversions (MES). IN BRIEF . . . o Higher levels of performance and productivity for desktop systems o New 50MHz processor POWERstation/POWERserver 360 o New 62MHz processor POWERstation/POWERserver 370 o Four times increase in Instruction Cache size (from 8KB to 32KB) o Integrated SCSI-1 interface o Integrated Ethernet interface o Memory capacity of up to 256MB o Internal fixed disk capacity up to 2GB o Dataless LAN-dependent capability o SCSI-2 External I/O Controller option o Four available Micro Channel slots o Model conversion capability Customer Letter Section DESCRIPTION The POWERstation/POWERserver 360 and 370 systems contain processors capable of higher levels of performance and productivity than previously available RISC System/6000 desktop systems. INCREASED CAPACITY/PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT These new processors perform at: o 50MHz in the POWERstation/POWERserver 360 o 62MHz in the POWERstation/POWERserver 370. These systems also contain a 32KB Instruction Cache buffer -- a four times increase from the 8KB of previous desktop systems -- to achieve an increased level of performance with the 32KB Data Cache Unit. The POWERstation/POWERserver 360 and 370 systems are designed to grow with the customer's needs. The standard memory of 16MB on the Model 360 and 32MB on the Model 370 can be increased to 256MB. The two memory card slots yield 256MB with two 128MB memory cards. (A minimum of 1GB of disk drive is recommended for paging when using 256MB of memory.) The internal disk drive of 400MB disk is standard. Two disk drives can be installed for up to 2GB of internal fixed disk. (SCSI-2 devices operate at SCSI-1 data rates when attached to a SCSI-1 interface.) The 360 and 370 also contain one integrated SCSI-1 controller and one integrated Ethernet adapter as standard features. These features are integrated into the processor board and do not occupy any of the four Micro Channel feature card slots, which are available for additional features such as SCSI controllers, communication processors and graphics processors. In addition, the High-Performance Disk Drive Subsystem Adapter (80MB/sec) (#6211) will now be available on these desktop systems as an optional feature. NOTE: MB is 1,048,576 bytes (two to the twentieth power) when referring to memory; in all other cases it is 1,000,000 (ten to the sixth power). GB is 1,073,741,824 bytes (two to the thirtieth power) when referring to memory; in all other cases it is 1,000,000,000 (ten to the ninth power). INTEROPERABILITY: The POWERstation/POWERserver 360 and 370 and the AIX (R) Version 3.2 for RISC System/6000 operating system offer interoperability with other IBM and other vendor host systems, helping to protect the customer's principal investment. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. ASSET PROTECTION The POWERstation/POWERserver 360 and 370 are binary compatible with previously announced RISC System/6000 systems to help to protect the customer's investment in software and hardware. A system installation and management facility is provided as part of the operating system. The System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) simplifies the performance of system management tasks, such as software installation and configuration, device configuration and management, problem determination and storage management. Support is also provided for the use of an ASCII terminal as the system console and remote installation of the system on a LAN. UPGRADE CAPABILITY Model conversions will be available to upgrade the 340, 350 and the 360 models as follows: FROM TO MODEL MODEL 340 370 350 370 360 370 Conversions may take place in the customer's location with limited interruption. To help protect the customer investment, existing IBM fixed disks and all currently supported IBM input/output devices and features of the POWERstation/POWERserver 340/350 are supported by the 370. NOTE: Model conversions will require a minimum of 400MB of internal fixed disk and a minimum of 32MB of memory for a 370. AIX Version 3.2.3 Extended for RISC System/6000 is a requirement.
