The processor chips are fabricated in .7-micron, 4-level metal/1-level polysilicon CMOS 4S and are packaged on a single multichip ceramic module. The primary features of the system are the following: o 32KB two-way set associative instruction cache and a multiport 256KB four-way set associative data cache. o Dual fixed point execution units and dual floating-point multiply-add-divide units. The architecture has been improved by the addition of a new quad-word floating-point load/store instruction, convert to integer instruction, square root instruction, new address translation, and a new interrupt structure. o Hardware performance monitors accessible by software. o The memory interface is either four or eight words wide and supports memory up to 2GB. o Binary compatible with previous IBM RISC System/6000 systems. RISC SYSTEM/6000 POWERSTATION/POWERSERVER 590 The RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 590 uses POWER2 technology to provide greater performance levels than previous deskside models. It is a high-end open system with emphasis on performance. The standard 64MB expandable memory with a 66MHz CMOS processor and a 256KB data cache and 32KB instruction cache will provide a new level of performance. This, coupled with 80MB/sec 32-bit Micro Channel (R) architecture, seven available slots, integrated SCSI and standard SCSI-2 controllers, 2GB (two 1GB drives) disk and CD-ROM-2 drive standard, and a full range of optional features makes the RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 590 a powerful open systems commercial/compute server or a high-performance 3D workstation. RISC SYSTEM/6000 POWERSTATION/POWERSERVER 58H The RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 58H uses POWER2 technology to provide a new level of mid-range performance with similar configurability and application benefits to the Model 590. It is a mid-range open system with emphasis on performance. The standard 64MB expandable memory with a 55MHz CMOS processor and a 256KB data cache and 32KB instruction cache will provide a new level of mid-range performance. This, coupled with 80MB/sec 32-bit Micro Channel architecture, seven available slots, integrated SCSI and standard SCSI-2 controllers, 2GB (two 1GB drives) disk and CD-ROM-2 drive standard, and a full range of optional features makes the RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 58H a powerful mid-range open systems commercial/compute server or a high-performance 3D workstation. PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT Customers can now enjoy greater performance than previously available on RISC System/6000 deskside systems. The combination of increased performance, memory and options expands the possibilities for the customer to support more active users and add additional applications. GROWTH PATH FOR INSTALLED DESKSIDE SYSTEMS: Installed Model 570 and 580 systems can be upgraded to POWER2 technology in the new models. UPGRADEABILITY IMPROVEMENTS: Customers with installed Models 570 and 580 requiring additional performance can upgrade to the new POWER2 technology models. These customers can preserve their investment and attain the increased levels of performance they require as follows: o Upgrade to the Model 58H from the Model 570 o Upgrade to the Model 590 from the: - Model 570 - Model 580 - Model 58H. Upgrades from other models to the Model 58H or 590 will be reviewed and, if approved, priced based on the history and configuration of the machine to be upgraded. The IBM representative should submit an RPQ for the other requested upgrades. HIGH-AVAILABILITY CLUSTER: The Model 58H and Model 590 are uniprocessors; however, they can be configured into a cluster of up to four systems using HACMP/6000 to provide high-availability and greater throughput. ENABLE CUSTOMER'S SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS The cluster capability of Model 58H and 590 along with AIX (R) High Availability Cluster Multi-Processing/6000 (HACMP/6000, 5765-111) provides both high availability and a dramatic performance boost when used in a cluster of four machines. Customers with a need for an environment that exceeds the capacity of a single processor can achieve their level of performance with the economy of RISC processing along with the open-system architecture of the RISC System/6000 and AIX/6000 by selecting the cluster configuration of up to four Model 58Hs or four 590s. DATALESS CLIENT CAPABILITY PROVIDED: POWERstation/POWERserver Models 58H and 590 can be configured as dataless clients, supported by the Diskless Workstation Management functions in AIX Version 3.2.5. Dataless client capability is available over Ethernet and Token-Ring only. MANAGING MULTIPLE SYSTEMS The advantage of being a dataless client is that software maintenance (installation of new releases or PTFs) needs only to be performed in one place in the network, at the server. Since the software is not physically installed onto the disks in the dataless client, updates can be applied to the server whose file system contains these program files for each attached client. PRODUCT POSITIONING The RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 590 is a high-performance, price competitive, open system. The RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 58H is a mid-range open system priced lower than the Model 590 but with similar application and configuration benefits. PUBLICATIONS The System Library Subscription Service (SLSS) is available by order number only. Customers currently subscribing to SLSS will receive publication updates automatically. Impactwriter Models AP8 and AS8 emulate the IBM 4202-3 Printer for traditional line printing of simple text and numbers. Graphics, all points addressable and large characters cannot be printed. 3. AIX support software for the LaserPrinter Integrated Network Option has the Network Option cards (Features #5495, #5496 and #5497 on the IBM 4039 LaserPrinter). PRINTER INFORMATION: 1. The IBM RISC System/6000 system supports Code Page 850. The Code Page 850 cartridge must be installed on the IBM 5202 Printer to fully use the full characters sets of the system. For details on available cartridges, refer to the IBM 5202 Sales Manual. Other IBM printers have Code Page 850 resident. 2. For optimum system performance, high-speed serial printers should be attached to the native ports or 128 Port Async Subsystem. 3. The parallel printer port is provided for the convenience character printer. High-speed printers or applications requiring a large amount of data transfer per page (for example, high-density graphics) should use the serial interface for optimum system performance. MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: IBM-supported terminal or IBM-supported display, display adapter and keyboard. POWERservers must have a console. LIMITATIONS: Memory must be installed in combinations of 2, 4, or 8 cards. The first two (if only two cards installed) or first four (if four cards installed) memory cards installed MUST be installed in pairs and of equal capacity (for example all 32MB). The second set of four memory cards installed can be of any available supported capacity but also must be of equal capacity to each other and installed simultaneously. An example of a usable configuration is shown below: Memory card one 32MB Memory card two 32MB Memory card three 32MB Memory card four 32MB Memory card five 64MB Memory card six 64MB Memory card seven 64MB Memory card eight 64MB Similarly, if Memory SIMM kits are installed, the memory capacity of cards 1-4 and cards 5-8 must be kept equal. For upgraded machines, it may be necessary for 8MB or 16MB memory to be replaced or SIMM kits installed to meet the above requirements. AIX/6000 applications written for POWER-based RISC System/6000s will run on the new POWER2-based models without recompilation, and will run significantly faster. Additional performance can be achieved by recompiling with the latest versions of the IBM XL compilers to further exploit the POWER2 technology. Applications compiled using a compiler option to exploit POWER2 technology may not function properly on systems that do not use the new POWER2 technology. Customers with any combination of POWER-, PowerPC 601- and POWER2-based systems may continue to run their applications unmodified. New applications and recompilation of existing applications for use in a mixed processor environment should be compiled using the POWER or common mode options available in the new XL compilers or any other compilers that support those options. Refer to Software Announcements 293-493 and 293-488, dated September 21, 1993, for more information. The following features, if installed on a Model 570 or 580 cannot be installed on a Model 58H or 590 if an upgrade is performed. Support for the RISC System/6000 High Performance Parallel Interface (HIPPI) adapter set requires Licensed Program Product 5696-658 ordered separately. MODEL CONVERSIONS: Customers with Models 570 and 580 will be able to upgrade their systems to the POWERstation/POWERserver 58H and 590 as follows: o From Model 570 to the Model 58H o From Model 570 to the Model 590 o From Model 580 to the Model 590 o From Model 58H to the Model 590. An upgraded machine must have a minimum of two memory cards totaling 64MB or more. Total memory cards in the machine can only be 2, 4, or 8. The first two cards (if only two installed) or first four cards (if four installed) must be of equal capacity. Also, the last four cards must be of equal capacity. An upgraded machine must have a SCSI-2 adapter. AIX/6000 Version 3.2.5, or later, must be installed and operational before beginning the upgrade. If additional memory or SCSI-2 is required, the customer must purchase and have these features installed before the upgrade. Upgrades from other models to the Model 58H or 590 will be reviewed and, if approved, priced based on the history and configuration of the machine to be upgraded. The IBM representative should submit an RPQ for the other requested upgrades. The model conversion MESs contain some or all of the following items and are ordered through the HONE configurator: o Processor replacement o Memory cards o Power supply o CD-ROM-2 drive o As required engineering changes o Installation instructions o New publications. NOTE: Parts removed become the property of IBM. Additionally, the following model conversions are now offered as standard offerings. o 55S to 58F o 55E to 58F o 56F to 58F o 520 to 58F o 530 to 58F o 52H to 58F o 520 to 57F o 530 to 57F Beginning in September 1993, all upgrades to 57F and 58F will be shipped using a new 'chassis exchange' process. All of the net-priced upgrade parts will be shipped already installed in a new Model 57F or 58F with the same serial number as the customer's currently-installed machine. The current machine configuration information requirements (for example, submission of current Product Topology information) remain in effect as a prerequisite to the scheduling of the upgrade. IBM service personnel will accomplish the upgrade by transferring all of the customer's existing disk/media/adapters/memory SIMMs to the new chassis. The displaced chassis and all associated components become the property of IBM and must be returned to IBM. Re-packaging these upgrades using a chassis exchange will reduce customer downtime/inconvenience associated with an upgrade, and minimizing IBM service personnel install time. Return of the displaced net-priced parts will also be simplified. The following model conversion RPQs are withdrawn and have been replaced with the announced upgrades: RPQ--8A0718 --8A0720 --8A0724 --8A0734 NOTE: Parts removed become the property of IBM. PLANNING INFORMATION CABLE ORDERS: No cables required. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: For problem analysis, the IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 58H and 590 diagnostic programs, preloaded on the system, provide console routines that lead a user through problem determination and help provide direction to resolve problems.
