Enhancements for the IBM 10/100 Mbps Ethernet MC Adapter for RS/6000 Micro Channel-based Systems Hardware Announcement October 6, 1997 Announcement Letter Number: 197-277 Table of Contents: At a Glance DESCRIPTION SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION PUBLICATIONS TECHNICAL INFORMATION TERMS AND CONDITIONS CHARGES CALL NOW TO ORDER At a Glance The IBM 10/100 Mbps Ethernet MC Adapter provides connectivity to 10/100BaseTx Ethernet LANs for select RS/6000 systems that support the MCA bus. Features include: Single port connection to 10BaseT or 100BaseTx Ethernet LANs through network switch or hub Automatic speed (10Mbps or 100Mbps) and duplex mode (full or half) selection when connected to auto-negotiation capable switch Network install/boot capability Full-duplex capability ----------------------------------------- For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM North America Sales Centers at 800-IBM-CALL Reference: RE010 Overview The following enhancements and limitations to the IBM 10/100 Mbps Ethernet MC Adapter for Micro Channel (R)-based RS/6000 (TM) models reduce product/order complexity and provide an Ethernet migration path for additional legacy MCA systems. Consolidation of feature codes Feature 2964 (UNI version) is being withdrawn on all models (refer to Hardware Withdrawal 997-264 997-264,:elink. dated October 6, 1997). Feature 2994 (SMP version) is renamed and announced on all models previously supported by feature 2964. Additional legacy systems are now supported by feature 2994. Increased maximum number of adapters allowed on SMP systems. Due to system performance limitations on legacy MCA models, only models listed in this announcement will be supported. Intended Customers Customers who need more networking performance and are taking advantage of the straightforward upgrade of 10 Mb Ethernet shared LAN segments to 100 Mbps Ethernet full duplex switched LAN segments. All applications and wiring (UTP Category 5) are preserved -- the switch must support 10/100 Mbps speeds. Key Prerequisites Supported Micro Channel-capable RS/6000 model AIX (R) Version 4.1.5, 4.2.1, or 4.3, and higher 10 Mb: Requires UTP Category 3, 4, or 5 wiring (customer supplied) 100 Mb: Requires UTP Category 5 wiring (customer supplied) Planned Availability Date October 31, 1997 ------------------------------ This announcement is provided for your information only. For additional information, contact your IBM representative, call 800-IBM-4YOU, or visit the IBM home page at: http://www.ibm.com DESCRIPTION This adapter provides connectivity to 10/100BaseTX Ethernet LANs for select RS/6000 systems that support the MCA bus. It provides 10Mb/sec or 100Mb/sec connectivity to 10BaseT or 100BaseTX Ethernet LANs, including the ability to automatically sense the speed provided at the hub port. The adapter is fully 802.3u Fast Ethernet standard-compatible. The product allows RS/6000 customers to migrate effortlessly from 10Mb/sec LANs to 100Mb/sec LANs using this same adapter. Features: Fully 802.3u Fast Ethernet standard-compatible Automatic speed (10Mb/100Mb) and duplex mode (full/half) selection when connected to auto-negotiation capable switch Full frame buffering on both transmit and receive 32-bit Micro Channel DMA bus master Support of full 64-bit streaming at 80MB data transfer capability on MCA bus Type 3 Micro Channel form factor Support of network install / boot operations MCA parity generation / detection Connection requirements: Connect to 10BaseT Ethernet LANs via 10BaseT hub using category 3, 4, or 5 unshielded twisted-pair cabling Connect to 100BaseT Ethernet LANs via 100BaseTX using category 5 UTP cabling Notes: AIX Version 4.1.5 device driver is shipped on diskette. Systems ordered with AIX Version 4.1.5 preinstalled will have the device driver installed on the hard disk drive. AIX Version 4.2.1 and 4.3 device driver is included on the base operating system When using up to four 10/100Mbps Ethernet MC Adapters on a system with dual Micro Channel busses, it is recommended the adapters be distributed two per Micro Channel bus. Model-specific limitations/recommendations are located in the sales manual pages. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Feature Availability Matrix The following feature availability matrix uses the letter "A" to indicate features that are available and orderable on the specified models. "S" indicates a feature that is supported on the new model during a model conversion; these features will work on the new model, but additional quantities of these features cannot be ordered on the new model; they can only be removed. "N" indicates that the feature is not supported on the new model and must be removed during the model conversion. As additional features are announced, supported, or withdrawn, this list will be updated. Check with your IBM representative for additional information.
