5000 MC (250-6000/1/2) Utility Faxback Doc. # 1724 THE REFERENCE DISKETTE This diskette contains utilities that help the 5000 MC operate with its peripheral hardware. Do not use operating system utilities in place of utilities found on this diskette. Although this diskette has several functions, be sure to use it whenever you add a device. Also be sure to make a working copy of your Reference diskette. USING THE REFERENCE DISKETTE MENU To use the utilities, insert the Reference diskette into Drive A and turn on the computer. The data windows appear on your screen. Follow the instructions on the screen to select the utility you need. The top bar of all menus always contains the menu title. Because you could pass through as many as three menu levels before you find the option you want to select, the top bar will help orient you. The second bar contains the menu options. One of the options is always highlighted. Select a different option by using the arrow keys to move the highlight. To activate your choice, press ENTER or type the first letter of the highlighted option. The third bar displays a description of the highlighted option. The bottom bar displays the keys you can use in the current menu. CONFIGURATION UTILITIES Most add-on adapter boards for the Tandy 5000 MC come with an adapter diskette containing adapter description files. These files specify all of the possible configurations for that board. If adapter description files are included with your new hardware, you must copy them to the reference diskette for automatic configuration to run properly. The configuration option can perform six tasks: INSTALL NEW ADAPTER FILES The install option lets you copy Adapter Description Files to the working copy of your Reference diskette. Use this option after you install an adapter board. AUTOMATIC CONFIGURATION This utility selects an appropriate configuration for you system and stores the information in the battery-backed CMOS memory. The new configuration will become active the next time the computer is started up. This utility finds a combination of nonconflicting settings that allow all the adapter boards to be enabled. Run this each time you install a new option or remove an existing one. VIEW CONFIGURATION You can view the current configuration settings using the View option. If a conflict exists, an asterisk denotes the conflicting settings. You can not change settings with the view option. Use Change Configuration to manually change conflicting settings. BACKUP CONFIGURATION The configuration settings are stored in battery-backed CMOS memory. The backup option copies the configuration settings to the Reference diskette for safekeeping. Be sure to run this option ONLY on your working copy of your Reference diskette. This option lets you easily restore configuration information in the event of CMOS battery failure. RESTORE CONFIGURATION Restore returns the configuration settings stored by the Backup utility. (/tmc-12/02/95)
