IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 MODEL 90 XP 486 (8590-0G5 AND 0G9) Contents Announcement Letter Number 191-057 dated April 23, 1991 US - Last Revised on April 23, 1991 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability IBM is extending the Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) Model 90 XP 486 family with two new entry models. These new models are based on Micro Channel (R) architecture and utilize the new i486SX (1) (486SX) 20MHz microprocessor. The 486SX consists of a 32-bit 486 processor without the numeric co-processor unit. This results in an entry 486 processor that performs at speeds comparable to that of a 33MHz 386 processor. These entry level models may be upgraded to the more powerful 486/25MHz or the 486/33MHz processors via the IBM PS/2 486/25 and 486/33 Processor Upgrade Options. (Refer to Product Announcement 191-052, dated April 23, 1991.) If the user requires numeric-intensive processing capabilities, this function can be obtained by installing the IBM PS/2 Math Co-Processor 487SX-20MHz optional feature. (Refer to Product Announcement 191-059, dated April 23, 1991.) The PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 (8590-0G5) is a 486SX/20MHz system with a 80MB (million bytes) Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) fixed disk drive installed as the standard direct access storage device. The Personal System/2 Model 90 XP 486 (8590-0G9) is a 486SX/20MHz system with a 160MB SCSI fixed disk drive installed as the standard direct access storage device. In addition, these new models feature 4MB of memory standard on the system board. The new PS/2 Models 8590-0G5 and 0G9, with the addition of 400MB fixed disk file options can now provide up to 960MB of internal data storage to better meet customer requirements. All other standard features such as processor upgradeability, Extended Graphics Array (XGA) graphics, memory optimization and expandability attributes of the PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 platform remain unchanged. (Refer to Product Announcement 190-176, dated October 30, 1990.) (10) Trademark of Santa Cruz Operations, Inc. (11) Registered trademark of UNIX System Laboratories, Inc. (12) Registered trademark of Novell, Inc. COMPATIBILITY: The PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 contains licensed System Programs that include BIOS, set configuration and features, test, copy an option diskette, backup/restore and update System Programs. These licensed System Programs are stored in a 3MB protected partition on the fixed disk drive. The Initial Machine Load (IML) loads the BIOS program from the fixed disk drive into system memory. BIOS provides the hardware instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 and maintains compatibility with many software programs currently operating under DOS and OS/2 on the Personal Computer XT (TM), Personal Computer AT (R), and the PS/2 family. However, due to the higher speed of the 486SX processor in the Model 90 XP 486 systems, some timing sensitive software may require modification. The 486SX processor does not have numeric co-processing capability. Applications designed specifically for the 80387 Math Co-Processor or the 486 with integrated math co-processor function may not run. The PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 Reference Diskette contains an update program (DISK386.SYS) and an installation program. The update program maintains compatibility between SCSI devices, IBM DOS, and some of the following types of programs that assumes the fixed disk drive will utilize the system Direct Memory Access (DMA) controller: o Multitasking DOS programs o Programs written for the 80386 microprocessor only o Programs that use the virtual 8086 mode of the 80386 microprocessor o Programs that emulate expanded memory specification (EMS) in extended memory. The update program should ONLY be installed when applications providing DOS and/or memory extensions fail to work properly. For example, an application may fail to load and return the DOS prompt, or when attempting to access a SCSI device, the system may hang or the screen may go blank. With this update program installed, a buffer is provided in the first megabyte of system memory, which serves as an intermediate location for data being transferred between the SCSI adapter and the requesting program buffer. While this update program allows applications that utilize the system DMA controller to run, some performance degradation in file access time may be experienced. Only after problems have been experienced, and the performance implications considered, should this update program be utilized. The Extended Graphics Array (XGA) is designed to be compatible with applications written to the following interfaces: o IBM VGA hardware interface in all operating environments. There are minor differences between the IBM VGA hardware interface and the XGA hardware support of the VGA interface. However, these differences are not expected to affect any applications. o Adapter Interface (AI) of 8514/A under DOS. o OS/2 Presentation Manager (TM) of 8514/A. o OS/2 DOS Compatibility Box in VGA modes. XGA does not support the applications written to: o 8514/A hardware registers o AI of 8514/A under OS/2. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. LIMITATIONS: The PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 supports a maximum of 32MB of memory, 16MB of which are addressable by DMA. The PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 supports 1MB, 2MB and 4MB memory SIMMs (70, 80 and 85 nanosecond only). However, because of interleaved memory, memory SIMMs must be installed in a matched pair (for example, two 1MB SIMMs or two 2MB SIMMs). Refer to the PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS section for operating systems limitations. The licensed System Programs include BIOS, set configuration and features, copy an option diskette, test, backup/restore and update System Programs. These licensed System Programs are stored in 3MB of protected partition on the fixed disk drive. The formatted capacity is therefore reduced by 3MB, and the total user accessible capacity may vary slightly based on operating environments. This protected partition is not affected when the drive is formatted using the Format command in DOS or OS/2. The licensed System Programs are also provided on the PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 Reference Diskette. The following Micro Channel adapters and options are NOT supported by the PS/2 Model 90 XP 486: o IBM Personal System Display Adapter 8514/A o IBM Personal System 3117 Adapter/A o IBM Personal System 5.25-inch External Diskette Adapter/A (#8760, 6450245) o IBM Personal System High Speed Adapter/A o IBM Personal System 80386 Memory Expansion Option 2MB Kit (#3077, 34F3077); however, memory SIMMs can be moved to the planar, if desired o IBM Personal System 80386 Memory Expansion Option 4MB Kit (#3011, 34F3011); however, memory SIMMs can be moved to the planar, if desired o IBM Personal System 80386 Memory Expansion Option (#3019, 6450367) o IBM Personal System 2-8MB 80386 Memory Expansion Option (#5211, 6450605) o IBM Personal System 5.25-inch 1.2MB Internal Diskette Drive (#1006, 6451006) replaced by 6451066 (which does not require an adapter card) o IBM 3117 Scanner o IBM 3118 Scanner o IBM Personal System/2 256KB Level 2 Cache Option (#1098, 6451095).
