These systems are specifically designed to support the demand of network servers, multi-user host, and advanced business and technical applications. Both systems feature a unique processor complex that contains the 80486/50MHz processor, ECC Memory Controller, 256KB Level 2 cache, and the electronic modules to support 40MB/second streaming data, SCBs, VPD, and error logging functions. This processor complex can be easily upgraded on customers' systems as faster processors and newer functions are developed. This capability provides additional flexibility and investment protection to the customer. The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 (8595-0MF and 0MT) systems are built on IBM's Micro Channel architecture, providing compatibility with a wide range of existing Micro Channel hardware and software applications. Also, the enhanced performance functions (40MB/second streaming data and SCB support) of these new PS/2 systems utilize the previously announced, advanced capabilities of IBM's Micro Channel architecture. The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 mechanical platform provides up to seven file storage bays. Two 3.5-inch bays are used for the 2.88MB Diskette Drive and the standard SCSI fixed disk drive. Four available 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch bays can accommodate four more SCSI disk drives, providing expansion of up to 3.2GB of storage (two 1GB SCSI Hard Disk Drives and three 400MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drives). Various device combinations of 3.5-inch, with or without removable media, and 5.25-inch, half-high or full-high form factors, can be installed providing a high degree of flexibility in storage configurations. The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 (0MF and 0MT) systems have a total of eight 32-bit Micro Channel I/O slots. (One slot is used for the IBM Personal System/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter with Cache, and one slot is used for the IBM Personal System/2 XGA Display Adapter/A.) The remaining six slots are available for future expansion and growth. These new models feature two, high-speed 8MB 70ns ECC Memory Modules for a total 16MB of standard memory. By adding additional 8MB 70ns ECC Memory Modules, a total of 64MB of memory, addressable by direct memory access (DMA), is supported on the system board. These systems also support 70ns, 80ns and 85ns parity memory when installed in matched pairs. ECC memory or parity memory must be installed in these models. Mixing ECC and parity memory is not supported. USER PRODUCTIVITY User productivity can be significantly affected by the total performance of the computer systems supporting the user's applications. The powerful 486/50MHz processor, with 256KB Level 2 cache; 40MB/second streaming data; Enhanced memory optimization; and SCB support contained on IBM's new processor complex, significantly enhances processing performance. However, greater system throughput and balanced performance are achieved with the PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 (0MF and 0MT) by combining this new 486/50MHz processor complex with Micro Channel architecture, high performance SCSI fixed disks, and a 32-bit bus master SCSI adapter with cache. Additional functions and benefits of the PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 (0MF and 0MT) include: o Streaming data allows bus master adapters operating on the Micro Channel at speeds up to 40MB/second to transfer and receive data to and from system memory. This feature can be conveniently installed by using the system configuration diskette. o Enhanced memory optimization optimizes processor and bus master adapter access to memory by providing a dual data path architecture on this new, enhanced 486/50 processor complex card. This feature is designed to improve system throughput in both database server and file server applications supporting large numbers of clients. o Subsystem control block support off-loads complex instruction sets utilized by high-function, bus master adapters, from the processor to system memory where they can be more efficiently executed. This feature increases system performance and capacity by minimizing the processor overhead normally required to support LAN server input/output functions. o High performance SCSI fixed disk drives allow data to be stored and retrieved quickly. The 400MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drive has an 11.5ms average seek time with a 128KB look-ahead buffer. The 1GB SCSI Hard Disk Drive features an 11.0ms average seek time with a 256KB look-ahead buffer. o Reliability, availability and serviceability increase customer productivity by significantly improving the reliability of the system. - Error-checking and correction memory enhances system throughput by correcting memory errors. This function increases system availability by correcting single bit memory errors without impacting customer operations. - Synchronous channel check for data parity verifies the parity of data bits being transferred across the Micro Channel to assure higher levels of data integrity. - Vital product data is a unique identifier that can be communicated to a host. The unique identifier can be associated with the specific server on the LAN. - Maintenance information is captured for the service personnel via an error log. The error log can be interrogated at a later time, providing information on potentially failing commodities. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT The following features of the IBM PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 make it well-suited for customers who require business solutions that will simplify the management of their data processing systems: o Standard PS/2 Micro Channel architecture o Easy-to-install system and options o Hardware and software compatible with the wide range of existing non-IBM Micro Channel compatible adapters and applications o Vital product data (VPD). VPD is also used for system network management for the customers server environment. The unique identifier provides a way for the customer to identify, from the host system, servers that reside on the network. This function serves as a security measure by verifying if unauthorized servers are on the network. PRODUCT POSITIONING The new Model 95 XP 486 (0MF and 0MT) systems are the most powerful models of the PS/2 product line. The popular Model 95 XP 486 package allows high levels of system expansion with generous offerings of expansion slots and fixed disk bays. COMPATIBILITY: Refer to the 8595 Sales Manual pages, or contact your IBM representative, for a complete list of supported features and options and compatible IBM and vendor software. The Sales Manual is updated periodically. The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 contains licensed System Programs, which include set configuration and features, test, copy an option diskette, backup/restore and update System Programs. These licensed System Programs are stored in a 3MB protected partition on the fixed disk drive. The initial machine load (IML) loads the BIOS program from the fixed disk drive into system memory. BIOS provides the hardware instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 to maintain compatibility with many software programs currently operating under DOS and OS/2 on the Personal Computer XT (TM), Personal Computer AT (R) and the PS/2 family. However, due to the higher speed of the 486 processor in these new models, some timing-sensitive software may require modification. The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 Reference Diskette contains an update program (DISK386.SYS) and an installation program. The update program maintains compatibility between SCSI devices, IBM DOS and some of the following types of programs that assumes the fixed disk drive will utilize the system direct memory access (DMA) controller: o Multitasking DOS programs o Programs written for the 80386 microprocessor o Programs that use the virtual 8086 mode of the 80386 microprocessor o Programs that emulate expanded memory specification (EMS) in extended memory. The update program should only be installed when applications providing DOS and/or memory extensions fail to work properly. For example, an application may fail to load and return the DOS prompt, or when attempting to access a SCSI device, the system may hang, or the screen may go blank. With this update program installed, a buffer is provided in the first megabyte of system memory, which serves as an intermediate location for data being transferred between the SCSI adapter and the requesting program buffer. While this update program allows applications that utilize the system DMA controller to run, some performance degradation in file access time may be experienced. Only after problems have been experienced, and the performance implications considered, should this program be utilized. The Extended Graphics Array (XGA) is designed to be compatible with applications written to the following interfaces: o IBM VGA hardware interface in all operating environments. There are minor differences between the IBM VGA hardware interface and the XGA hardware support of the VGA interface. However, these differences are not expected to affect any applications. o Adapter Interface (AI) of the 8514/A under DOS. o OS/2 Presentation Manager (R) of the 8514/A. o OS/2 DOS Compatibility Box in VGA modes. NOTE: XGA does not support applications written to the 8514/A hardware registers or the AI of the 8514/A under OS/2. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. LIMITATIONS: The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 supports a maximum of 64MB of ECC memory, all of which is addressable by DMA. The PS/2 Model 95 XP 486 (0MF and 0MT) systems support 1MB and 2MB 85ns parity memory; 2MB, 4MB and 8MB 80ns parity memory; and 4MB and 8MB 70ns ECC and parity memory. The memory SIMMs must be installed in matched pairs. ECC memory or parity memory must be installed in these models. Mixing ECC and parity memory is not supported. A maximum of two 1GB hard disk drives can be installed in the Model 95 XP 486 (0MF or 0MT) systems. Refer to the PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS section for operating systems limitations. The licensed System Programs include set configuration and features, copy an option diskette, test, backup/restore and update System Programs. These licensed System Programs are stored in a 3MB protected partition on the fixed disk drive. The formatted capacity is therefore reduced by 3MB, and the total user accessible capacity may vary slightly based on operating environments. This partition is not affected when the drive is formatted using the Format command provided in DOS or OS/2.
