External Standards CSA C22.2 No. 950-M-1989 IEC-950 Hardware Requirements: The ThinkPad 730TE requires a PCMCIA HDD with one of the following bootable Pen enabled operating systems. PenDOS -- Preinstalled on PCMCIA HDD 260MB (39H6014) Pen for OS/2 Warp -- Preinstalled on PCMCIA HDD 260MB (39H6017) Microsoft Windows for Pen -- Preinstalled on PCMCIA HDD 260MB (A model with this operating system is available.) You can also install another PCMCIA HDD with another operating system, such as PenRight, to meet your requirements. Software Requirements: The ThinkPad 730TE must have a bootable operating system with Pen capability. PenDOS 2.2 -- PC DOS 7.0 PenDOS 2.2 (Japanese) -- PC DOS J6.3/V Pen for OS/2 Warp Version 1.03 Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing 1.0 -- PC DOS 7.0 Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing 1.1 -- PC DOS J6.3/V Compatibility The ThinkPad 730TE is a new computer product designed to exchange data with other ThinkPads and PS/2(R) products at the hardware interface level. The serial, parallel, and FDD can be used to communicate with other ThinkPads and PS/2 systems. Limitations When the 8MB or 16MB IC DRAM optional feature card is used in the systems, the space in slot two can be shared with a Type II card; however, a Type III cannot be plugged into that slot. When the battery is replaced with an externally charged battery, the battery gauge icon showing the remaining battery charge capacity may not be accurate. Batteries that are externally charged and inserted into the system will be interpreted by the system as having a less-than-full charge capacity remaining. The most accurate reading of the battery gauge icon is when both batteries were charged internally in the system. Mouse devices such as PS/2 Mouse and Microsoft Mouse are not supported. The stylus pen should be used as the pointing device instead of using a mouse. The system reserves COM4 (base I/O address 3E8h), IRQ 5 as the internal digitizer communication port. For serial I/O communications like the external 232C or PCMCIA modem cards, use COM2. The default IRQ 5 assigned for the Ethernet PCMCIA card should be changed to another value, for example, IRQ 4,7,9, or 12. When an external CRT monitor is attached to the system, the CRT monitor supported is VGA (640 x 480, 16 colors). The LCD and external VGA CRT are simultaneously displayed. The power management function in the system is designed to work with the Advanced Power Management (APM) device driver. The APM driver should always remain installed in the operating system to maintain efficient power management. The system is designed so that you can install or remove the PCMCIA card without turning off the system. Refer to the instructions that come with the PCMCIA card. PC Card point enablers can write directly to the hardware, bypassing Socket and Card Services Release 2.0. Writing directly to the hardware can cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Also, point enablers can interfere with client device drivers that communicate with Socket and Card Services Release 2.0. Additional customer testing in your specific environment is recommended. PCMCIA adapter (PC card) diagnostics programs usually do not support slot numbers greater than two. If a PCMCIA adapter is installed in slot number three and is failing, reinstall the PCMCIA adapter into computer PCMCIA slot number one or number two to diagnose suspected problems. Point enabler, a device driver of the PCMCIA adapter, will not support a slot number greater than two; therefore, a PCMCIA adapter (PC card) installed in slot number three cannot be used with point enabler. The PCMCIA power management device driver supports partial suspend when IBM PCMCIA communication cards, such as Token-Ring, Ethernet, 3270, and 5250 cards are used. If these IBM cards are in use, only partial suspend is supported. If non-IBM communication cards are used, the system can enter full suspend; however, the communications link will be disconnected. To re-establish the communication after going into suspend mode, users are required to restart the system or restart the application program. Space saver keyboard (84G2524) usage To attach a space saver keyboard through the port replicator, a Y-cable is required. The Y-cable connection must be reversed so that the keyboard is connected to the mouse connector of the Y-cable and the mouse is connected to the keyboard connector of the Y-cable. The following restrictions apply when Pen for OS/2 Warp is used: Connecting the PS/2 keyboard through the I/O port replicator is required when either the PC DOS full screen session or OS/2 Warp full screen session is selected. It is recommended that you do not switch to a PC DOS or OS/2 Warp full screen session if the keyboard is not attached. When the WIN-OS/2(TM) session is selected, the pen tool bar is not available and the pen is only usable as a pointing device or as a handwriting character or gesture input. When a host communication emulator program such as the IBM 3270 Emulator is used in the Pen for OS/2 Warp environment, connecting the PS/2 keyboard is recommended because the pop-up keyboard does not support the host emulator special key functions. When a PCMCIA ATA device such as the 260MB HDD or ThinkPad files are used, use the OS/2 FORMAT command on the OS/2 Windows session to initialize the ATA card. The drives icon on the OS/2 system will not be able to initialize the ATA card. The following restrictions apply when Microsoft Windows for Pen Computing is used: Connecting the PS/2 keyboard through the I/O port replicator is required when the PC DOS full screen session is selected. When a host communication emulator program such as the IBM 3270 Emulator is used in the Windows environment, connecting the PS/2 keyboard is not recommended, because the pop-up keyboard does not support the 3270 special key functions when using Windows. When a PCMCIA ATA device such as the IBM 260MB HDD or the ThinkPad file requires initializing, use the DOS FORMAT command or use EZPLAY (PC Card Director) in the PC DOS mode after exiting Windows. A PS/2 keyboard is required to initialize the ATA card in the DOS mode. The following restrictions apply when PenDOS is used: Running PenDOS in the Windows DOS session or OS/2 DOS session is not supported. When a host communication program such as the IBM 3270 Emulator is used in the PC DOS environment, connecting the PS/2 keyboard is recommended, because the pop-up keyboard does not support the host emulator key functions. Planning Information Cable Orders: No cables required Installability: The ThinkPad 730TE system has minimal setup requirements. The battery must be inserted into the system unit.
