MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: The PS/2 External CD-ROM Drive requires the PS/2 Card to Option Cable (#1041) (6451041) to connect to the base system through either a PS/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter (#1005) (6451005) or a PS/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter with Cache (#1018) (6451018). The second or additional PS/2 External CD-ROM Drive requires the PS/2 Option to Option Cable (#1042) (6451042). PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: The following operating systems support the PS/2 External CD-ROM Drive: o Operating System/2 (TM) Extended Edition 1.2. (1) o OS/2 (R) Standard Edition 1.2. (1) o Disk Operating System (DOS) Versions 3.3 and 4.0. (2) o AIX PS/2 (3). (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (1) The OS/2 device driver support will be available in the first half of 1990. The instructions to receive the device driver are packaged with the feature. (2) DOS requires the installation of the DOS device driver and file extensions supplied with the feature. CD-ROM sharing is only supported with the IBM PC LAN Program 1.3 or the DOS LAN Requestor program component of the OS/2 LAN Server 1.2 Program under DOS Version 4.0. CD-ROM installation is not supported on a PCLP Extended Services Domain Controller. CD-ROM installation on a server is only supported in a dedicated network server configuration. No foreground application execution or keyboard input is permitted on the server. (3) IBM intends to support the PS/2 External CD-ROM Drive attached to PS/2 Models 8555 (061), 8565, 8570, 8573 and 8580 by the AIX PS/2 operating system. COMPATIBILITY: The IBM SCSI features are designed to maintain compatibility with current software that uses the standard defined BIOS interfaces. USER GROUP REQUIREMENTS: The IBM SCSI feature addresses numerous customer requests and satisfies requirements submitted by IBM User Groups. LIMITATIONS: Small Computer System Interface (SCSI), as defined in the ANSI standard (X3.131-1986), provides for multiple SCSI adapters (initiators) on the SCSI bus. The SCSI bus may be internal or external to the system unit. The PS/2 SCSI Adapter is in conformance with this standard and has an external port. PLANNING INFORMATION CABLE ORDERS: The PS/2 Card to Option Cable is a 60-pin to 50-pin cable that connects from the external connector of the SCSI adapter to the first external feature, or other equipment manufacturer's device that meets the SCSI ANSI standard (X3.131-1986). The cable is approximately four feet (1,220 millimeters) in length. The PS/2 Option to Option Cable is a 50-pin to 50-pin cable that connects one external SCSI device to another external SCSI device, or other equipment manufacturer's device that meets the SCSI ANSI standard (X3.131-1986). The cable is approximately two feet (610 millimeters) in length. The PS/2 Option Interface Terminator included with the PS/2 Card to Option Cable, is a 50-pin terminator connected to the last SCSI device to terminate the SCSI bus. INSTALLABILITY: The Personal System/2 External CD-ROM Drive can be installed in approximately 30 minutes. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: The standard system error indications should be followed to resolve all problems. PACKAGING: PRODUCT SHIPMENT GROUP PS/2 External CD-ROM Box Assembly CD-ROM Drive AC Power Cord Test CD (in jewel box) CD Caddy Installation and Operating Instructions Diagnostic Diskette Program License Agreement SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL Security and auditability features of the system in which this product is attached are: o A mechanical lock to allow the user to lock the system cover o A user-invoked password function used to prevent the use of the system by unauthorized persons. A data security exposure exists even with Power-On Password installed, since external SCSI adapters can attach through the external SCSI port and gain undetected read or write access to data stored on internal and external SCSI devices. Physical access to the system and external SCSI devices must be controlled to limit this exposure. User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and implementation of security features, administrative procedures and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
