The system features a 80386SX 20MHz processor, 2MB of memory (expandable to 16MB) and a 10Mbps 10Base-T, AUI (10Base5) Ethernet adapter. The PS/2 Model 35 LS (14X) can be fully upgraded with DASD devices and or share server support in a LAN. BUSINESS SOLUTIONS The PS/2 Model 35 LS (14X) offers considerable flexibility in configuration and feature function. This LAN station can be installed in a twisted pair or coaxial environment as a medialess workstation. It can be used with RIPL or upgraded with DASD and used as a communicating personal computer. The low priced, small footprint and expandable attributes of this system provide the customer with a variety of business solutions such as data entry, or as a platform for specialized end-user programs such as data base management, spread sheet or LAN management. The affinity of the 8535 to the 3270 environment via its front of screen characteristics and 122-key keyboard allows growth from an enterprise workstation environment to an enterprise LAN environment (increasingly reliant on personal computer applications). INVESTMENT PROTECTION Based on the 20Mhz 80386SX microprocessor, the PS/2 Model 35 LS (14X) can be considered a long-term, reliable system solution. The 8535-14X supports a wide range of IBM and non-IBM programs, applications, I/O devices, features and accessories, such as DOS, OS/2 (R), Novell, 3.5-inch and 5.25-inch diskette drives, and DASD devices. (Refer to the LIST OF SUPPORTED PRODUCTS attachment for additional information.) (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. The PS/2 Model 35 LS (14X) is fully upgradeable with all of the DASD and adapter cards available on the PS/2 Model 35 SX (8535-040, 043). Additionally, the LAN station is an excellent platform for configurations not available in DASD configured models of the PS/2 Model 35 SX (5.25-inch diskette drives and other devices). The PS/2 Model 35 LS (14X) has an affinity to the 3270/MFI (Main Frame Interactive) environment, not previously available in IBM's personal computer or PS/2 families. This design point provides an excellent value to the data processing manager of an enterprise. This low priced LAN station is an excellent alternative to the dependent display solutions currently available. When migrating from dependent terminals to a PS/2 Model 35 LS (14X) and utilizing the latest IBM 3270 emulator programs, little to no retraining is required because the PS/2 Model 35 LS (14X) is enabled with 3270 front of screen characteristics available on dependent terminals. Additionally, the PS/2 Model 35 LS (14X) supports a new IBM 122-key Keyboard modeled after the current IBM 3270 data terminal keyboard. The host applications are presented to the end user as they were on the data terminal. The PS/2 Model 35 (14X) allows the customer the additional benefit of being able to use personal computer applications in this previous host-only environment. An additional level of investment protection is offered to customers with the considerable expansion capability of the PS/2 Model 35 LS (14X). This is accomplished because of its new mechanical package. GROWTH ENABLEMENT The 8535-14X addresses customers' requirements to "enhance feature function" by providing a platform flexible enough to accommodate 16MB of memory on the system board, and a variety of diskette, fixed disk and other devices. The 8535-14X system unit is designed with two DASD bays capable of accommodating 5.25-inch devices. As new DASD devices are brought to market, they are often in this physical package prior to being reduced to a 3.5-inch size. The performance and expansion capability of the 8535-14X allows either DOS, DOS Windows or OS/2 operating systems to be resident in the system. The customer interested in a low priced, small footprint solution will be impressed with the upgradeability of this LAN station and will recognize it as a sound business investment. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT Because the design point of the 8535-14X is "medialess," system management is inherently easier. System security is improved because data cannot be removed via a diskette at the workstation. Software and data files are stored at the server, providing one central facility for maintenance and backup. Consistent software program levels and data files may be maintained for all users on the server. Additional security features such as passwords and the ability to select the IPL source improve control of system usage. The cover lock and bolt down features help prevent theft of the system and options. PRODUCT POSITIONING The PS/2 Model 35 LS (14X) provides an AT (R)-Bus Ethernet LAN station solution that complements the PS/2 Model 35 LS (8535-24X) token-ring model. This is consistent with the PS/2 Model 55 LS Micro Channel (R) LAN station solutions currently available. The PS/2 Model 35 (14X) can be installed in either an Unshielded Twisted-Pair (telephone-type) cabled LAN or in a coaxial LAN. This flexibility allows the product to coexist in a majority of the existing LAN environments. The 80386SX 20MHz microprocessor, 2MB of memory and faster graphics (16-bit VGA) are excellent design attributes for this low priced LAN station. Additionally, the ability to upgrade this medialess workstation with high capacity, fast fixed disks (40 and 80MB at 17ms) and a selection of diskette solutions (1.44MB and 2.88MB with media sense and a 5.25-inch 1.2MB) makes investment protection and expandability key focus areas in positioning this product. In addition to its small size, the PS/2 Floor Stand option (#5606, 95F5606) is available, giving the user the ability to place the system unit vertically on the floor or desk. The PS/2 Models 40 SX, 35 SX and 35 LS complement each other and offer the customer a wide selection of reliable systems and models from which to choose, and at an attractive price/performance ratio. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The PS/2 Model 35 LS is designated as customer setup (CSU). CSU allowance is one day. CABLE ORDERS: Customer provided cabling is required to attach the system unit to the LAN. Additionally, cabling for system power (power cord) and keyboard cables are provided with the system unit. Instructions are provided as part of the initial setup instructions. The keyboard cable shipped with the system unit is of appropriate length for either a desktop or floor-standing configuration. INSTALLABILITY: By following the setup instructions, the user attaches the keyboard, display and power to the system unit. Additionally, the system unit is connected to the LAN. The LAN administrator must configure the workstation into the network as well as any adapters installed. This is accomplished by down loading the starter diskette image from the server. After power is turned on, a power-on self test (POST) will run as a machine checkout procedure. The PS/2 Model 35 LS (14X) has a universal power supply with an autosense circuit. No manual switching is required. Therefore, the Model 35 LS can be used worldwide. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: If a failure is found at initial installation, an instruction or error code will appear on the screen. For problem determination, the end user should request assistance from the LAN Administrator. If the test is successfully completed, the system attempts to load an operating system from the area predetermined during setup by the selectable boot utility. That may be a diskette drive, fixed disk or Remote IPL from a server. If an operating system is not found, the system will default to a ROM-loaded BASIC interpreter as explained in the Guide to Operations. The troubleshooting procedures consist of a power-on self test, diagnostic tests, and easy-to-follow troubleshooting charts designed to assist the user in isolating a defective machine element. The failing element can then be replaced or repaired under existing warranty provisions. When troubleshooting the PS/2 Model 35 LS (14X), diagnostics must be downloaded from the server.
