TECHNICAL INFORMATION SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS -- INSTALLING IBM EQUIPMENT: We recommend that IBM equipment be installed in areas that are well ventilated. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recommends a minimum outdoor makeup rate of 20 cubic feet per minute/per person in office or school laboratory (including computer labs) areas (ASHRAE 62-1989). Other federal, state or local regulations may also provide further guidance on indoor air quality issues. ODORS AND IBM EQUIPMENT: After installing IBM equipment, you may notice an odor when the equipment is operating. These odors are usually more noticeable when the equipment is new and diminish with use. Odors are common to most electronic equipment and are associated with the circuit boards and plastics used in product manufacture. Odors associated with new equipment are usually most noticeable in poorly-ventilated environments. IBM has dedicated significant resources to understand the source and nature of these odors. The materials used in manufacturing are well understood and have been selected for functional, environmental, human health and safety concerns. None of the odor components are present in quantities that exceed any regulatory or consensus standards or are known to cause adverse health effects. However, because some individuals may be exquisitely sensitive to odors, we recommend the electronic equipment be used in a well-ventilated area (ASHRAE 62-1989). Thermal, odor and ventilation factors should be considered when planning any installation involving electronic equipment. Ignoring thermal, odor and ventilating factors will often result in predictable complaints when: o Computer equipment is used in small, enclosed and poorly-ventilated work environments o Simultaneous operation of multiple workstations occurs in confined and poorly-ventilated work environments o Users are seated such that system exhaust is directed toward them. While indoor environments are complex, providing adequate ventilation often prevents these types of complaints. In each of the conditions described above, it is the employer's or user's responsibility to assure a work environment that meets regulatory and comfort requirements. IBM is committed to provide hardware and software solutions that are safe and that enhance productivity. Should you have additional questions regarding IBM products or supplies and human health, please contact Health Effects Research at (303) 924-5621. LIMITATIONS: The IBM PS/2 Model 25 SX LAN models (K01 and L02) have a LAN adapter with Remote Program Load; Remote Program Load from a second adapter is not supported. The Ethernet and Token-Ring LAN adapters will RPL from NetWare Versions 2.15, 2.2 and 3.11, as well as OS/2 Version 2.0. With 24-bit addressing, the i386 SX (386SX) microprocessor is limited to a maximum memory address space of 16MB. Of this 16MB of memory address space, the system requires 1MB plus 128KB for its use. The remaining 15MB of available memory address space includes a combination of all memory present on the system board as well as any memory that may be installed on any adapter cards, regardless of their function. The PS/2 Model 25 SX does not support double byte character set (DBCS) applications. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The PS/2 Model 25 SX is designated as customer setup (CSU). CSU allowance is one day. CABLE ORDERS: The customer is responsible for providing the LAN/network cabling to attach the LAN system units to the Ethernet or Token-Ring network. The Ethernet adapter supports both 50 ohm 10 Base 2 BNC connections and 10 Base T unshielded twisted pair connections. The power cord and keyboard cables are provided with the system unit. Instructions are provided as part of the initial setup instructions. INSTALLABILITY: By following the setup instructions, the user attaches the keyboard, mouse and power to the system unit. LAN system units will be connected to the LAN. The LAN administrator must configure the workstation for the network as well as any adapters installed. Additional time is required to install other adapters, and the operating system. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: If a failure is found at initial installation, an instruction or error code will appear on the screen. For problem determination in a network environment, the end user should request assistance from the LAN administrator. If the test is successfully completed, the system attempts to load an operating system from the area predetermined during setup by the Selectable Boot utility. That may be a diskette drive, fixed disk or Remote IPL from a server. If an operating system is not found, the system will default to a ROM-loaded BASIC interpreter as explained in the Guide to Operations publication. The Customer Problem Analysis and Resolution (CPAR) guides consist of a power-on self test, diagnostic tests, and easy-to-follow troubleshooting charts designed to assist the user in isolating a defective machine element. The failing element can then be replaced or repaired under existing warranty provisions. When troubleshooting the IBM PS/2 Model 25 SX in a LAN environment, diagnostics can be downloaded from the server. A Starter Diskette, Advanced Diagnostic and LAN diagnostic diskette are also available. Diagnostics and device drivers for the Ethernet and Token-Ring adapters are found on the adapter diskettes shipped with the LAN reference packages.
