IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 MODEL 57 SX (8557-045 AND 049) Contents Announcement Letter Number 191-078 dated June 11, 1991 US - Last Revised on June 11, 1991 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The Personal System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) Model 57 SX is a Micro Channel (R) system designed to complement and enhance the PS/2 Model 55 SX, Model 65 SX, and the low end of the Model 70 386 family. It provides product improvements such as increased processor speed, configuration flexibility, 16-bit video graphics array (VGA) graphics, and a Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) input/output interface. The PS/2 Model 57 SX provides a 20-MHz 80386SX microprocessor. Two models are offered with SCSI fixed disk capacities of 80MB (8557-045) and 160MB (8557-049). The PS/2 Model 57 SX features a five-slot, four-bay mechanical package. It is designed for desktop operation but ships with a vertical stand, allowing the customer the flexibility of horizontal or vertical orientation. The mechanical package allows for expansion with five 16-bit slots for Micro Channel adapters and four bays for I/O devices. Two of the bays contain a 3.5-inch 2.88MB (million bytes) media sense diskette drive and a SCSI fixed disk. Additional 5.25-inch and/or 3.5-inch devices, diskette drives, fixed disks, tape and CD-ROM drives, and similar devices may be installed in the two remaining bays. The SCSI controller is integrated in the planar, so a slot is not required. Up to seven SCSI devices (including the standard SCSI fixed disk) may be attached to the system. Two additional SCSI devices may be attached internally and the remaining devices externally via the external SCSI connector. Memory: The system ships with one 4MB single in-line memory module (SIMM) located in SIMM socket one of the 80MB (045) and 160MB (049) models of PS/2 Model 57 SX. The PS/2 Model 57 SX supports up to 16MB of 70-ns memory on the planar in three SIMM sockets. The memory controller automatically supports enhanced performance via memory interleaving with the appropriate memory configurations. Video is provided via the enhanced 16-bit industry-standard VGA. The IBM Personal System/2 Model 57 SX supports the IBM Enhanced Keyboard (101-key), Space Saving Keyboard (84-key), or the IBM Host Connected Keyboard (122-key), (Refer to Product Announcement 191-086, dated June 11, 1991). The keyboard selection can only be specified in new equipment orders and cannot be ordered separately for on-order or installed equipment. Disk cache, which improves fixed disk performance, is provided by DOS Version 5.0, disk caching program SMARTDRV and OS/2 (R) Version 1.30.1. PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: The following levels of operating systems are required for the PS/2 Model 57 SX: o IBM Disk Operating System (DOS) Version 5.0 o Microsoft (5) Windows 3.0 (with format restrictions) o Operating System/2 (R) (OS/2 (R)) Standard Edition 1.30.1 o OS/2 Extended Edition 1.30.1 o OS/2 LAN Server 1.30.1 o 4680 Operating System Versions 2.0 o 4680 Operating System Versions 4.0. (5) Registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. COMPATIBILITY: The PS/2 Model 57 SX contains licensed system programs, which include BIOS, set configuration and features, test, copy an option diskette, backup/restore and update system program. These system programs are stored in a 3MB protected partition on the fixed disk drive. The Initial Machine Load (IML) loads the BIOS program from the fixed disk drive into system memory. BIOS provides the hardware instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the PS/2 Model 57 SX and to maintain compatibility with many software programs currently operating under DOS and OS/2 on the Personal Computer XT (TM), Personal Computer AT (R) and the PS/2 family. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. Due to the high level of integration, features such as the PS/2 Micro Channel memory adapter options are not supported. Due to the new 2.88MB diskette drive, earlier versions or releases of operating systems or applications may not format diskette media correctly. Use of the proper level of operating system along with the new 2.88MB diskette drive will provide media sense of the 720KB, 1.44MB and 2.88MB diskettes, giving greater ease in formatting, reading and writing diskettes. LIMITATIONS: The PS/2 Model 57 SX supports a maximum of 16MB of memory, all of which are addressable by Direct Memory Address (DMA). The Model 57 SX supports 2MB, 4MB and 8MB memory SIMMs (70 nanosecond only). To take advantage of enhanced performance via interleaved memory, SIMMs should be installed using all 2MB or all 4MB SIMMs. One, two or three 2MB SIMMs provide memory interleaving. Two or three 4MB SIMMs also provide memory interleaving. The 8MB SIMMs do not provide interleaving. Refer to the PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS section for operating systems limitations. The licensed system programs include BIOS, set configuration and features, copy an option diskette, test, backup/restore and update system program. These licensed system programs are stored in three million bytes of protected partition on the fixed disk drive. The formatted capacity is therefore reduced by three million bytes and the total user-accessible capacity may vary slightly based on operating environments. This partition is not affected when the drive is formatted using the FORMAT command provided in DOS or OS/2. The licensed system programs are also provided on the IBM Personal System/2 Model 57 SX Reference Diskette. High performance BIOS uses 128KB of system memory. Display adapter cards that use the Auxiliary Video Extension, such as the IBM PS/2 Image Adapter/A, when installed in an PS/2 Model 57 SX require that they be installed in slot 2 and a display be attached to the system video connector during configuration of the system. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) SCSI specification for the total SCSI cable length connected to a SCSI interface is six meters (approximately 19.7 ft.) maximum. The length of the SCSI cable inside the Model 57 SX is one meter. Therefore, the total length of all SCSI cables for external devices that operate from the external SCSI connector may not exceed a maximum of five meters (approximately 16.5 ft.) including the cables inside each SCSI device. The following Micro Channel adapters and options are NOT supported by the IBM Personal System/2 Model 57 SX: o IBM Personal System 5.25-inch External Diskette Adapter/A (#8760, 6450245) o IBM Personal System/2 0-8MB Expanded Memory Adapter/A (#7259, 1497259) o IBM Personal System/2 1-8MB 286 Memory Expansion Adapter/A (#8285, 6450685) o IBM Personal System/2 2-8MB 286 Memory Expansion Adapter/A (#8286, 6450609) o IBM Personal System/2 5.25-inch 1.2MB Internal Diskette Drive (#1006, 6451006) o IBM Personal System/2 6157 Tape Drive Adapter/A (#4160, 92X1458) o IBM 6157-001 Streaming Tape Drive o IBM 6157-002 Streaming Tape Drive o 3363-A11 Optical Disk Drive o 3363-B01 Optical Disk Drive. The Small Computer System Interface (SCSI), as defined in the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) standard X3.131-1986, provides a port for the attachment of external devices. The PS/2 Model 57 SX is in conformance with this standard and has an external port. A data security exposure exists, even with power-on password installed, since external SCSI controllers can attach through the external SCSI port and gain undetected read or write access to data stored on internal and external SCSI devices. Physical access to the system and external SCSI devices must be controlled to limit this exposure. User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and implementation of security features, administrative procedures and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
