The 8573-031 is a 16MHz version, with a 30MB fixed disk drive. It includes Micro Channel (TM) Architecture, a VGA 16-grayscale plasma display, and a fully compatible PS/2 Enhanced Keyboard, all integrated into a single package. The new model features the 80386 32-bit microprocessor, high density memory technology, and a wide range of integrated features. With the capability of supporting up to 16MB of high speed real memory, 30MB of disk storage, full VGA graphics, and an optional 80387 Math Co-Processor, the 8573-031 provides significant performance for portable computer operations. All P70 386 models maintain compatibility with most existing software products for IBM personal computer systems. The 8573-031 provides 16MHz 80386 performance with 2MB of high speed (85ns) memory and a 30MB fixed disk. The system features a 16MHz 80386 microprocessor with 2MB high speed memory, all models expandable to 16MB with memory options. The integrated grayscale gas plasma display presents both text and graphics with excellent clarity and detail allowing the user to present documents, advanced business graphics, and digitized photos outside the office. The Model P70 386 provides a 32-bit system architecture that supports large single and multitask applications. The PS/2 Model 70 386 may be used as a stand-alone system or as an office desktop connected intelligent workstation, easily moved from one location to another, with connectivity established through its optional internal modem (94X1755). STANDARD FEATURES The 8573-031 comes standard with a 30MB fixed disk drive and integrated controller. All models come standard with: o 1.44MB, 3.5-inch diskette drive o Pointing device port o Serial/asynchronous port o Parallel port o Video Graphics Array (VGA) port o External storage device port. The external storage device port is the equivalent of the B drive internal diskette port, as found in the PS/2 Model 70. This permits attachment of externally powered devices like the IBM 4869 External Diskette Drive Model 001 and some other equipment manufacturers' backup devices. GRAPHICS The VGA port supports all VGA graphics and text modes including 640 x 480 graphics, 320 x 200 graphics in 256 colors, and 720 x 400 text using any optional PS/2 VGA color display, and maintains compatibility with CGA and EGA modes. DRIVE SPECIFICATIONS The fixed disk drive has a capacity of 30MB. The controller is integrated with the drive. FEATURE INTEGRATION The high level of feature integration on the system board reduces the requirement for optional adapters. Memory on the system board can be expanded to 4, 6 or 8MB. The optional 80387 Math Co-Processor provides enhanced performance in arithmetic calculations. The system is designed for tool-free installation and includes security features in BIOS. Refer to the 8573 TECHNICAL REFERENCE MANUAL for details. The 8514/A is not supported. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The 8573 is designated as customer setup. CABLE ORDERS: No cabling is required for the base machine other than for system power. Cables are provided with the system unit (including the keyboard), and the instructions are provided as part of initial setup. INSTALLABILITY: By following the setup instructions, the user attaches peripherals and inserts the Reference Diskette. Power is then turned on and Set Configuration is run after the computer has successfully completed its initial self-tests. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: If a failure is found at initial installation, an instruction will appear on the screen. If the test is successfully completed, the system attempts to load an operating system from the A drive. If an operating system is not found, the system attempts to load one from the C fixed disk drive. If an operating system is not found, the user will be prompted via an icon to insert a diskette. A final default is provided through the use of a ROM-loaded BASIC interpreter as explained in the QUICK REFERENCE manual. PACKAGING: The IBM 8573 is packaged in one carton.
