COMPATIBILITY: The Model P75 486 is designed to maintain compatibility with the existing Model P70s as well as compatibility with many software products currently operating under DOS on the Personal Computer XT (TM), the Personal Computer AT (R) and the IBM PS/2 family. Due to the higher speed of the i486 processor in the Model P75 486 systems, some timing sensitive software may require modification. Specific hardware products, features and software products that have been tested and are supported in the Model P75 486 environment are listed in the attachment to this announcement. The Model P75 486 has not been tested with non-IBM hardware features/options. The Extended Graphics Array (XGA) is designed to be compatible with applications written to the following interfaces: o IBM VGA hardware interface in all operating environments. There are minor differences between the IBM VGA hardware interface and the hardware support of the VGA interface. However, these differences are not expected to affect any application. o Adapter Interface (AI) of 8514/A under DOS o OS/2 Presentation Manager (TM) of 8514/A o OS/2 DOS Compatibility Box in VGA modes. XGA does not support the applications written to the: o 8514/A hardware register o AI of 8514/A under OS/2. For additional information on XGA, refer to Product Announcement 190-182, dated October 30, 1990. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. LIMITATIONS: 128KB of main memory is used for high performance BIOS. Some plasma screen characteristics are different than those found on the 8503 monochrome display. Refer to the 8573 Technical Reference manual for details. DOS 3.3 supports up to two SCSI devices in a system. DOS 4.0 supports up to seven SCSI devices when corrective service diskette (CSD) #UR29015 is installed. This CSD is also required to support expanded memory support (EMS). This diskette is available through a registered service coordinator. PLANNING INFORMATION CABLE ORDERS: No cabling is required for the base machine other than for system power. Cables are provided with the system unit (including the keyboard), and the instructions are provided as part of initial setup. INSTALLABILITY: By following the setup instructions, the user attaches peripherals and inserts the reference diskette. Power is then turned on and Set Configuration is run after the computer has successfully completed its initial self-tests. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: If a failure is found at initial installation, an instruction will appear on the screen. If the test is successfully completed, the system attempts to load an operating system from the A drive. If an operating system is not found, the system attempts to load one from the C fixed disk drive. If an operating system is not found, the user will be prompted via an icon to insert a diskette. A final default is provided through the use of a ROM-loaded BASIC interpreter as explained in the Quick Reference manual. PACKAGING: The PS/2 Model P75 486 is packaged in one carton. The system unit carton contains the system unit with keyboard (8573-161 or 401), and includes: o Customer setup sheet o Quick Reference with Reference Diskette and PS/2 Device Driver Installation Instructions with XGA Device Drivers (three diskettes) for OS/2 Diskette, XGA Device Driver for DOS AI, Windows 2.1 and 3.0, AutoCAD Release 10, and AutoCAD/386 Release 10 Diskette, and IBM PS/2 XGA Device Drivers Diskette 3 AutoCAD Support o SCSI Terminator o System unit power cord. ACCESSORIES AND/OR SUPPLIES: To order the IBM PS/2 Travel Case (#3194, 79F3205), contact your IBM representative or an IBM Authorized Dealer. The Keyboard Template (84F9794), can be purchased from IBM Telemarketing Operations (TMO). Call IBM TMO at 1-800-IBM-2468. Mail orders should be sent to: IBM Corporation IBM Telemarketing Operations One Culver Road Dayton, NJ 08810 SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL Security and auditability features of the system in which this product is attached are: o A mechanical lock to allow the user to lock the system cover o A user-invoked password function used to prevent the use of the system by unauthorized persons. LIMITATIONS: Small Computer System Interface (SCSI), as defined in the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) standard X3.131-1986, provides a port for attachment of external devices. The P75 486 SCSI port is in conformance with this standard. A data security exposure exists, even with Power-On Password installed, since external SCSI controllers can attach through the external SCSI port and gain undetected read or write access to data stored on internal and external SCSI devices. Physical access to the system and external SCSI devices must be controlled to limit this exposure. User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and implementation of security features, administrative procedures and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
