Customers have the choice of ordering OS/2 (R) LAN Server 2.0 Advanced (#4949, 04G1055) or OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 Advanced* (#4950, 96F8414) preinstalled on the PS/2 Server 295 system at the manufacturing site. This improves system setup time and provides customers with a turn-key hardware/software solution. Terms and conditions for the OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 and 3.0 Advanced licensed programs remain unchanged. An additional programming requirement is also being announced. IBM OS/2 LAN Server 1.3, 2.0 or 3.0 Advanced must be installed before installing the Maximum Availability and Support System/2 (MASS/2) (#3072, 41G9295) and Multi Processing Extensions/2 (#2859, 41G9293). LAN Manager (1) 2.xx or NetWare (2) Requester for OS/2 may also be installed to satisfy this requirement. Because of this requirement, MASS/2 and Multi Processing Extensions/2 will not be preinstalled on the PS/2 Server 295 system when customers do not order LAN Server 2.0 or 3.0 Advanced also preinstalled. Customer Letter Section DESCRIPTION PS/2 SERVER 295 The PS/2 Server 295 is a full-function, build-to-order 486 network server designed for client/server applications supporting a range of users requiring high performance and maximum system availability. In addition to high availability, the system provides new levels of network control, for both local and remote locations, allowing network management from anywhere in a customer's organization. The PS/2 Server 295 is positioned to be an application server for mission critical applications. The PS/2 Server 295 provides new levels of performance and functionality, with high availability, and uses one or two Intel 486/33 or 486/50 processors. Enhancements to the PS/2 Server 295 build-to-order system provide customers the option of ordering IBM OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 Advanced or IBM OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 Advanced preinstalled on the hardware. A brief description follows of the software available for preinstallation on the PS/2 Server 295. OS/2 LAN SERVER VERSION 2.0 ADVANCED IBM OS/2 LAN Server Version 2.0 Advanced provides enhancements in the areas of system management, Double Byte Character Set (DBCS) support for DOS LAN Requester, Windows (3) 3.0 support, vendor product enabling and additional performance enhancements by exploiting advanced functions of the Intel (4) 386 architecture. Also provided is disk mirroring/duplexing and local server security. These functions allow the OS/2 LAN Server Version 2.0 Advanced to support customers with mission critical applications requiring higher performance and enhanced data integrity. OS/2 LAN SERVER VERSION 3.0 ADVANCED IBM OS/2 LAN Server Version 3.0 Advanced features include redirected install enablement configuration/installation/distribution (CID), Domain Management API, Peer services, up to 1,000 requesters per server on a single network, a Thin Client, NTS/2 and TCP/IP coexistence. The OS/2 LAN Server Version 3.0 Advanced product also uses the 386 High-Performance File System, has improved disk fault tolerance and multiprocessor enabling for the PS/2 Server 295. MASS/2 MASS/2 provides comprehensive system management capabilities, allowing network control from local or remote locations. In addition, MASS/2 has extensive error logging and recovery techniques designed to overcome most hardware and software failures. MASS/2 is required to fully use the system architecture and is a prerequisite for the PS/2 Server 295. It is shipped preloaded when ordered with a PS/2 Server 295. IBM MULTI PROCESSING EXTENSIONS/2 Multi Processing Extensions/2 provides the multiprocessing capability to the PS/2 Server 295, assuring the highest levels of performance for today's advanced client/server database applications. IBM ORTHOGONAL RAID-5 DISK ARRAY/2 IBM Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2 provides RAID-5 level of disk array data integrity. In addition, when combined with MASS/2, the IBM Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2 application offers protection from failure of the Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) controller or bus.
