These new PS/2 models provide ISO-compliant Extended Graphics Array (XGA) with faster screen refresh and higher resolution, with standard video memory of 1MB. The 9590 system also provides the ability to upgrade processor performance via processor complex card options. Built on Micro Channel architecture, these PS/2 Model 90 systems include a new Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) 212MB fixed disk drive (model 0LA) and high-performance XGA-2 graphics. All models provide a 2.88MB diskette drive. All other hardware characteristics mirror those of existing 8590 models. As with all Model 90 XP 486 systems, customers can protect their system investment as needs change by upgrading to higher performing processor complex cards, such as the IBM PS/2 Enhanced 486/33-66 Processor Upgrade Option. USER PRODUCTIVITY The preinstalled OS/2 2.00.1 operating system, 32-bit busmaster SCSI, and the ISO compliant XGA-2 Display Adapter/A contribute to the user's productivity improvements. Many other features of the PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 also contribute, such as: o OS/2 2.00.1 improves user productivity by integrating most DOS, Windows, 16-bit OS/2, and 32-bit OS/2 applications on a single, graphical, object-oriented workplace -- the OS/2 desktop. Preinstalled OS/2 further enhances productivity by providing a fully configured, ready-to-go system when powered on, along with features that enable the user to manage a system configuration easily. o The 32-bit busmaster IBM PS/2 SCSI Adapter with Cache can transfer data at burst speeds of up to 16.6MB/sec, while providing adapter support for multiple and various SCSI devices. o 8MB of fast, 70ns memory is standard on the system board of the Model 90 systems. While 80ns memory SIMMS are supported, 70ns memory provides optimum memory subsystem performance. o High-performance XGA-2 ISO capable graphics adapter is standard. The 90 XP 486 also requires an analog display (8503, 8507, 8511, 8512, 8513, 8514, 8515, 8516, 8518, 9515, 9517, 9518, 6312, 6314, 6319 or equivalent). The PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 contains licensed system programs, which include set configuration and features, test, copy an option diskette, backup/restore and update system programs. These licensed system programs are stored in a 3MB protected partition on the fixed disk drive. The initial machine load (IML) loads the BIOS program from the fixed disk drive into system memory. BIOS provides the hardware instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 to maintain compatibility with many software programs currently operating under DOS and OS/2 on the Personal Computer XT (TM), Personal Computer AT (R) and the PS/2 family. However, due to the higher speed of the 486DX2-50 processor in the Model 90 XP 486 systems, some timing-sensitive software may require modification. LIMITATIONS: The PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 supports a maximum of 64MB of memory, 16MB of which are addressable by direct memory address (DMA). The licensed system programs are stored in a 3MB protected partition on the fixed disk drive. The formatted capacity is reduced by three million bytes and the total user accessible capacity may vary slightly based on operating environments. This protected partition is not affected when the drive is formatted using the Format command in DOS or OS/2. The following adapters cannot be installed in slot #4 of the PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 systems because of the physical limitations of these adapters; however, they can be installed in slot #2 or #3: o IBM Realtime Interface Co-Processor Multiport/2 (#6263, 09F1897 or #6247, 16F1820) o IBM Realtime Interface Co-Processor Portmaster (R) Adapter/A (#6360, 53F2601; #6364, 53F2604; or #6368, 53F2607). The PS/2 systems (9590-0LA, 0LF) with 16-bit bus masters (for example, the PS/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter (#1005, 6451109)), which support 32-bits of addressing, will cause system malfunction or potential loss of data when the user installs greater than 16MB of system memory. High performance BIOS uses 128KB of system memory, and an additional 256KB is reserved for system use in systems with 16MB or more of memory. The DOS 5.0 customer can use the fonts designed to meet ISO 9241 Part 3 and DIN 66234 on IBM DOS Version 5.0 by using the file ISO.CPI provided on the DOS ISO Utility diskette.
