192-256 IBM THINKPAD 700 AND 700C PS/2 SYSTEMS The IBM ThinkPad (TM) 700 and 700C are Micro Channel (R) systems designed to provide a small, lightweight, battery- or AC-operated portable notebook computer. The notebook computer is convenient to use and carry, and is a general business solution for the mobile professional. The systems provide expandability and the speed and capacity to support advanced applications and operating systems. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. The ThinkPad 700 monochrome system (9552-300 and 9552-301) offers two models, which are preinstalled with DOS/Prodigy with hard disk capacities of 80 megabytes (MB) (9552-300) and 120MB (9552-301). The ThinkPad 700C color system (9552-30B) offers a preinstalled model with DOS/Prodigy with a hard disk capacity of 120MB. The monochrome models' screens may be upgraded to the color configuration with the IBM ThinkPad Display Upgrade Kit to Color Model. Customers may upgrade the monochrome model to a larger hard disk with the 120MB Hard Disk Option (which is currently the highest capacity Micro Channel Architecture hard disk drive available). Customers may also upgrade all system models to a higher performance processor with the IBM ThinkPad 486SLC2 Processor Upgrade Option. To complement this system and features announcement, a 3550 Expansion Unit and a High Speed Internal Data/Fax Modem are described in separate announcements (Product Announcements 192-258 and 192-261). All IBM ThinkPad models will externally support the IBM PS/2 (R) Enhanced Keyboard (101/102 keys), Space Saving Keyboard (84/85 keys), Host Connected Keyboard (122 keys), or Japanese Enhanced Keyboard (106 keys). The IBM ThinkPad models support the Japanese DBCS Operating System with the Japanese Enhanced Keyboard (106 keys). Customers may run the existing Japanese DBCS applications with these features. The IBM ThinkPad models are able to support ISO features that comply with the emerging international standard ISO 9241 with other compatible "ISO capable" components, as part of a total system (see Product Announcement 192-221). As a result of IBM's continued commitment to improve product reliability, the new Premier PS/2 product line, all 9552 models will now carry a 3-year warranty for the system unit and a 1-year warranty for options with Customer Carry-In Repair (CCR) service. Planned Availability Dates: o Color model -- October 16, 1992. o Monochrome models -- October 30, 1992. HIGHLIGHTS o Improves productivity of mobile professionals who need a high-function, convenient, portable notebook system. o Enables advanced business solutions by providing a fast processor (486SLC 25 MHz), large memory (4MB to 16MB), and a large hard disk (80MB, 120MB). o Protects the user's investment in supported IBM peripherals and licensed programs. o Provides upgrade capability of hard disk, processor, and display. The user can upgrade the system to a larger capacity hard disk, to a higher performance processor, and/or from a monochrome display to color. The processor can be upgraded to IBM's fastest processor, the 486SLC2 (25/50 MHz), which is designed for low power consumption with very fast processing speed for the most demanding spreadsheet applications. o Improves satisfaction with usability for users who want a high-resolution 10.4-inch active matrix TFT color LCD VGA display, sophisticated power management, and a TrackPoint II (built-in pointing device within the system keyboard). o Supports ISO features that comply with the emerging international standard ISO 9241 Part 3, with attachment of an ISO capable PS/2 display. o Provides expansion capability for connectivity to host and local area network (LAN) systems via the Expansion Cartridge with one half-size Micro Channel slot. o Provides desktop expansion capability by the use of the IBM 3550 Expansion Unit, which features two full-size Micro Channel slots and one 5.25-inch/3.5-inch bay for small computer system interface (SCSI) devices (such as CD-ROM, R/W optical, or HDD). (See Product Announcement 192-258.) o Supports two optional internal data/fax modems. The IBM High Speed Internal Data/Fax Modem provides a high-speed solution (14400 bits per second (bps)) that can greatly reduce data transmission through V.32bis compression and decrease telephone charges.
