IBM HIGH SPEED INTERNAL DATA/FAX MODEM Contents Announcement Letter Number 192-261 dated October 5, 1992 US - Last Revised on October 5, 1992 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The IBM High Speed Internal Data/Fax Modem (#3632, 42G2580) is a V.32bis Data (300-14,400bps)/V.17 fax (300-14,400bps), internal modem. This is a state-of-the-art, full function, auto-dialing, auto-answering, data/fax modem. It is an international modem with error correction, data compression and power management capabilities. The modem has the ability to facilitate an acoustic coupler. The modem is designed for the following systems: o ThinkPad (TM) Models 700 and 700C o PS/2 (R) Model N51 SX (8551-033) o PS/2 Model N51 SLC (TM) (8551-025) o PS/2 Model CL57 SX (8554-045) o PS/2 note Model N33 SX (8533-A33 and A35). In addition, MyCOMM (1) (Data) and MyFAX (1) (fax) software applications (untranslated) are provided. Also announced is the IBM Data Access Arrangement (DAA) (#4832, 43G3324) option. This cable option is available to provide connectivity to Public Switch Telephone Networks (PSTNs) in up to 74 countries. The modem contains an internal DAA for U.S., Canada, Japan and Latin America (except Chile). However, for use in other countries, an external DAA is required to provide proper connection to the country PSTN. Users traveling to these countries are required to purchase the additional external country-unique DAAs -- removable and interchangeable. For performance reasons, U.S. and Canada modem users traveling to Japan may want to purchase the Japanese external DAA. Conversely, users of the Japanese modem traveling to the U.S. may want to purchase the U.S. and Canada DAA. The IBM DAA Interface Cable (#4366, 42G4741) is necessary for use with the external DAAs. It is not part of the U.S., Canada, Japan and Latin America (except Chile) shipment group, since external DAAs are not required for modem usage in these countries. However, users traveling to countries requiring external DAAs require this cable for connection between the modem and the DAA. Planned Availability Date: March 26, 1993 (2). (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (1) Registered trademark of PNB, France. (2) These optional features have not been approved by the Federal Communications Commission. These devices are not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased until the approval of the FCC has been obtained. BUSINESS SOLUTIONS The installability, performance and full functionality of the modem ensures that customers have the essential capabilities to solve complex communication tasks and attain appropriate business solutions. The IBM High Speed Internal Data/Fax Modem provides connectivity for certain IBM portable systems that require the unique form-factor, internal adapter modem: o ThinkPad Models 700 and 700C o PS/2 Model N51 SX (8551-033) o PS/2 Model N51 SLC (8551-025) o PS/2 Model CL57 SX (8554-045) o PS/2 note Model N33 SX (8533-A33 and A35). Two PSTN interfaces are provided on the IBM High Speed Internal Data/Fax Modem. Connection to U.S., Canada, Japan, and some Latin America PSTNs is via an internal DAA. External, interchangeable DAAs for additional countries are provided. External DAAs are small cylindrical devices that connect between the modem and the telephone cable. Some countries have unique requirements and therefore there are approximately 33 unique DAAs. These DAAs are interchangeable. For example, a user in France could remove the external French DAA and install an external German DAA when traveling to Germany. Only the DAA and the country-unique cable need to be changed. The code within the modem will support all 74 countries; however, as countries are approved, modem upgrades may be required. INVESTMENT PROTECTION Customers can run most existing modem applications with this modem. Mobile professionals who already have compatible modems and applications may view these modems as an extension of their current investment strategy. The IBM High Speed Internal Data/Fax Modem is compatible with the existing IBM Internal Data/Fax modem (2400b data/9600b fax). It has the same physical form-factor and support the same application interfaces. A list of options, by country, is included in this document. By ordering the appropriate option part number, the particular modem required and the DAA corresponding to the desired country will be shipped. NOTE: The IBM High Speed Internal Data/Fax Modem contains an internal DAA for countries that utilizes the RJ11-to-RJ11 cable. These countries include U.S., Canada, Japan and approximately 22 other (mostly Latin American) countries. An external DAA need not be ordered for use with this modem in these countries. Refer to the option part number list for details. PNB ACOUSTIC COUPLER: For information purposes, a PNB Acoustic Coupler (non-IBM) can be ordered by contacting PNB, or one of PNB's authorized dealers. PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: The IBM High Speed Internal Data/Fax Modem is designed to operate with the following Operating Systems: o Operating System/2 (R) Version 2.00.1 (3) o IBM DOS 5.0 (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (3) OS/2 (R) 2.00.1 is an updated version designed to support the IBM ThinkPad Models 700 and 700C, and can only be obtained by calling 800-342-6672. COMPATIBILITY: The IBM High Speed Internal Data/Fax Modem is designed to be compatible with the following systems: o IBM ThinkPad Models 700 and 700C o IBM PS/2 Model N51 SX (8551-033) o IBM PS/2 Model N51 SLC (8551-025) o IBM PS/2 Model CL57 SX (8554-045) o IBM PS/2 note Model N33 SX (8533-A33 and A35). LIMITATIONS: V.42bis data compression is limited by applications that utilize the BIOS controlling the serial port. Data compression for applications that do not bypass the BIOS is limited to 19.2K bps. Many applications bypass the BIOS. Hence, they allow data compression approaching the theoretical limit of 57.6K bps, or four times data compression. PLANNING INFORMATION CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The modem is designated as customer setup. Customer setup, service and programming information are provided. CABLE ORDERS: The appropriate cable (with connectors) is provided with the shipment group, and is also separately orderable. To order separately, the IBM High Speed Internal Data/Fax Modem requires the 2.13 meter (7-foot) RJ11-to-RJ11 cable for the U.S., Japan, Canada, and some Latin American countries. The IBM DAA Interface Cable is required for all other countries. (Refer to the CHARGES section for specific feature numbers.) INSTALLABILITY: The IBM High Speed Internal Data/Fax Modem installation time is approximately 30 minutes. These estimates assume that the using system has a 3.5-inch diskette drive. If no drive is available on the using system, the enabling code contained on the diskette in the modem shipment group must be loaded from an external drive, or ported from another system or docking station. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: The troubleshooting procedures consist of a power-on self-test, diagnostic tests, and easy-to-follow troubleshooting instructions designed to assist the user in isolating a defective machine element. The failing element can then be replaced or repaired under existing warranty provisions. First failure data capture (FFDC) and error logging are implemented for ease of maintenance. Any detected modem error will be captured and logged for analysis. This will help identify and reduce the no trouble found (NTF) common in modem devices. As part of the AT command results, the FFDC will be indicated in the AT command results of the diagnostic command.
