USER PRODUCTIVITY The IBM PS/2 Wizard Adapter enhances user productivity by bringing technical computing power, typically associated with much more powerful and costly machines, to the desktop of the engineer, scientist or financial analyst. The addition of AIX support to the total PS/2 Wizard solution, enables more end users and application diversity, resulting in overall productivity gains. The high performance personal computing platform allows customers to accomplish certain large-scale computing tasks on a single machine in a stand-alone or network environment. INVESTMENT PROTECTION The addition of AIX support to the PS/2 Wizard Adapter protects the customer's investment in the 386-based PS/2 by enabling the customer to upgrade an existing machine with workstation-like performance. The combination of the i860 processor with a Micro Channel busmaster lets customers take advantage of significant performance improvements without purchasing a new machine. This product is an enhancement to the PS/2 Wizard Adapter announced on November 14, 1989, (34F3062). All existing orders will be converted to the new part number. In addition, IBM is offering a publication entitled PS/2 Wizard AIX Upgrade Kit as an upgrade for customers who purchased the PS/2 Wizard Adapter prior to the availability of AIX support. This publication contains an updated user's guide and the device driver diskette for AIX. GROWTH ENABLEMENT AIX support for the IBM PS/2 Wizard Adapter enables customers to expand the application base that can utilize the PS/2 Wizard Adapter. AIX and OS/2-based technical computing tasks can be added as growth enhancements to a PS/2 that was previously utilized solely for general-purpose computing tasks. SCHEDULE The planned availability date is December 21, 1990. TECHNICAL INFORMATION SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: o The IBM PS/2 Wizard Adapter requires one of the following PS/2 system units: - PS/2 Model 70 - PS/2 Model P75* - PS/2 Model 80 - PS/2 Model 90 XP* - PS/2 Model 95 XP*. The IBM PS/2 Model P70 is not supported. * These models are not currently supported by AIX PS/2. Therefore, the PS/2 Wizard Adapter will operate only with IBM OS/2 on these models. o Two available expansion slots are required. Refer to the LIMITATIONS section for additional information. o One 3.5-inch diskette drive (1.4MB) is required. o A 60MB disk drive is the minimum recommended drive for operation with IBM AIX PS/2 Version 1.2. The device drivers shipped with the PS/2 Wizard Adapter require approximately 1MB of DASD. Software developers should note that the Intel i860 Software Development Tools require an additional 4MB to 5MB. PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: The PS/2 Wizard Adapter requires: o One of the following device drivers shipped with the PS/2 Wizard Adapter: - IBM PS/2 Wizard Adapter Program for AIX PS/2 -- Version 1.2 - IBM PS/2 Wizard Adapter Program for OS/2 -- Version 1.2. All customers who purchased the PS/2 Wizard Adapter and received earlier versions of the OS/2 device driver will receive an upgrade diskette, provided that the customer returned the User Registration Card included with the adapter. Customers who purchased the PS/2 Wizard Adapter prior to the availability of AIX support can obtain the AIX device driver separately. The PS/2 Wizard AIX Upgrade Kit can be ordered as part number 64F7353. o One of the following operating systems: - AIX PS/2 Version 1.2 - Operating System/2 (R) Standard Edition Version 1.1 or 1.2 - Operating System/2 Extended Edition Version 1.1. or 1.2. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. OPTIONAL SOFTWARE FOR APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT: Application developers also need one of the following software packages to recompile applications to run with PS/2 Wizard Adapter. Refer to Programming Announcements 290-817, dated December 18, 1989, and 289-638, dated November 14, 1989, for ordering information. o The Intel i860 OS/2 and AIX Software Development Tools for C (#1315, 64F7347) includes the required tools to enable development of applications written in C, running under OS/2 or AIX. This is a native compiler, which means that the customer must have the PS/2 Wizard Adapter to use these tools. The native tools use the Intel i860 microprocessor on the board to perform the compilation. o The Intel i860 OS/2 and AIX Software Development Tools for FORTRAN (#1316, 64F7348) includes the required tools to enable the development of applications written in FORTRAN, running under OS/2 or AIX. This is also a native compiler, as above, and includes optimizing features (Vectorizer). o The Intel i860 OS/2 Software Development Tools (#0917, 34F3070) includes a C compiler that enables developers to port applications written in C, running under OS/2. This is a cross compiler, which can be used to recompile applications in the 386/486 environment WITHOUT the PS/2 Wizard Adapter. The cross compiler is cost effective for the early stages of porting, since the developer does not need to purchase additional hardware to get started. The PS/2 Wizard Adapter is required to run/test the application in the i860 environment. LIMITATIONS: The IBM PS/2 8580-111, 121, 311 and 321 may require a change to the system planar board as defined in Engineering Change Announcement (ECA) 048. Customers should contact their IBM representative or IBM Authorized Remarketer for information on this requirement. Only one PS/2 Wizard Adapter may be installed per system unit. Two system expansion slots must be allocated for the IBM PS/2 Wizard Adapter, due to power constraints. If the user has installed the PS/2 Wizard Adapter and the PS/2 Wizard Memory Expansion Option, the two allocated slots will be sufficient. PLANNING INFORMATION IBM provides direct support for all end-user developers by phone, IBM Central Service at 1-800-237-5511.
