DASD storage capacity is increased to over 8GB for the Model 112 and over 6GB for the Model 012. A second External Storage Adapter is supported on each of these models to allow up to a total of 14 external 320MB DASD to be supported in addition to the internal DASD supported. The new 8-Port Synchronous Communication Adapter and the new 4-Port Selectable Synchronous Communication Adapter allow more BSC and SDLC communication lines to be supported in fewer slots than with other Micro Channel 370 communication adapters. That leaves more slots available for other optional adapters and provides greater configuration flexibility. The 8-Port Synchronous Communication Adapter supports up to eight 19.2Kbps lines. The 4-Port Selectable Synchronous Communications Adapter supports up to two 64Kbps lines and two 19.2Kbps lines. For many customers, the additional ports and these line speeds offer room for growth in data volumes and data transmission rates. Multiple adapters may be installed to support even greater numbers of lines. The Enhanced 1/4-Inch Tape Unit (#4061) is the same price as the current 1/4-Inch Tape Unit (#4060) but may offer over twice the performance. With a capacity of approximately 525MB, the Enhanced 1/4-Inch Tape Unit can also offer as much as four times the capacity of the current unit. The Enhanced 1/4-Inch Tape Unit is designed to provide more convenient low-cost support for increased data storage requirements and the larger DASD configurations necessary as applications grow and the number of users increase. DOS Version 5.00 offers improved performance, enhanced memory management and an improved user shell for the PS/2 side of the BiProcessor Models 014 and 114. Installing DOS Version 5.00 may allow current BiProcessor users to achieve better PS/2 performance and make use of more PS/2 memory. INVESTMENT PROTECTION To protect the investments of current customers and allow for future growth, the functions in this announcement are supported on both the current and the prior models of the Micro Channel 370, even though the prior models are withdrawn. The enhancements to DASD, tape and communications may extend the useful life of customer systems. These functions can be ordered for field installation on existing systems or for plant installation on new systems. The new Enhanced 1/4-Inch Tape Unit can also interchange data using tapes from systems with the current 1/4-Inch Tape Unit. That allows customers with an investment in existing Micro Channel 370s to use the new tape unit for new installations and still interchange tape data between systems where required. On the new tape unit, the cartridges supported for tape interchange allow a slightly higher data rate and the same capacity as the current tape unit allows. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT The higher data rate and larger capacity of the Enhanced 1/4-Inch Tape Unit offer a better, low cost solution for system backup of DASD. By using new, higher density cartridges, a single cartridge can easily backup a DASD, reducing operator effort. The 4-Port Selectable Synchronous Communications Adapter has user-selectable interfaces for X.21, V.35 and RS-232. As requirements change, the customer can dynamically reconfigure line interfaces. Reconfiguration of a line can occur while the system is running without impacting other lines on the adapter and other users. System availability to end users can stay high even when a line must be changed. Remote Support Auto Callback is a security enhancement to the existing remote operator facility (ROF). When a potential remote console calls the Micro Channel 370, the Micro Channel 370 accepts the call, disconnects the phone line and verifies the call by calling the phone number of the authorized remote console. Once the second connection is established, the normal ROF password validation proceeds. USER PRODUCTIVITY The Enhanced 1/4-Inch Tape Unit is designed to enhance productivity by reducing the time for backups and the number of tapes that must be handled and stored. Dynamic reconfiguration of interfaces on the 4-Port Selectable Synchronous Communications Adapter may allow users to continue to work undisturbed while another line is reconfigured. DOS Version 5.00 offers improved useability and an enhanced user shell for BiProcessor users. BUSINESS SOLUTION Micro Channel 370 support for IBM's highest performance impact printers and laser printers makes it an attractive solution to high-volume printing requirements and AFP (TM) requirements. Up to four channel printers may be supported in addition to multiple serial/parallel and coax attached printers. IBM business partner solutions take advantage of IBM's AFP software and printers to offer integrated bar code solutions. COPI and DevTech Associates combine a Micro Channel 370 and AFP software in a simple, ready-to-go package for suppliers who must put bar coded labels on goods and shipments to retailers. Tape to print and custom AFP print solutions are also available. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. TECHNICAL SUMMARY The maximum DASD capacity of the Model 112 is increased to over 8GB. The Model 012 maximum capacity is over 6GB. The additional capacity is added using the External Storage Adapter. The number of External DASD Storage Adapters supported on the Model 012 and Model 112 has been increased to two. That allows a total of two External Enclosures for SCSI Devices (3511-003) to be attached to these models. The supported DASD is the 320MB DASD, feature #1108. Each enclosure supports up to seven DASD. The Enhanced 1/4-Inch Tape Unit is an integrated cartridge tape drive. It can provide over twice the performance of the 1/4-Inch Tape Unit (feature 4060). With new cartridges the capacity of the Enhanced 1/4-Inch Tape Unit is up to 525MB or over four times the capacity of feature #4060. The 4-Port Selectable Synchronous Communications Adapter and the 8-Port Synchronous Communications Adapter provide more configuration flexibility for customers who need multiple synchronous communications lines. All the ports on these adapters support synchronous communications. Each adapter can support any combination of BSC and SDLC communication lines. The 8-Port Synchronous Communications Adapter can support up to eight 19.2Kbps lines. The Four-Port Selectable Synchronous Communications Adapter supports fewer lines but can support faster line speeds. It can support up to two 64Kbps lines; the remaining two lines can each be up to 19.2Kbps. The first two ports of the 4-Port Selectable Synchronous Communications Adapter can support V.35, or RS-232 interfaces. The first port can also support the X.21 interface. The actual interface of the first two ports is selectable by the customer. The interface can be dynamically reconfigured while the Micro Channel 370 is in operation. It is not necessary to deactivate the system or the other lines on the adapter while a line is being reconfigured. The remaining two ports have RS-232 interfaces. RS-232 interfaces support a maximum of 19.2Kbps. DOS Version 5.00 support offers many advantages to users of the BiProcessor models (014 and 114). With DOS Version 5.00, users can use more memory and take advantage of improved memory management, improved performance, improved function and the improved usability of DOS Version 5.00. PRODUCT POSITIONING The Micro Channel 370 is the lowest-priced System/370 (TM) system. Low-priced I/O, economical Entry End User (EEU) software pricing, and the price of the Micro Channel 370 combine for an attractively low system price. The features and functions available for the Micro Channel 370 make it a robust distributed system or stand-alone application system. IBM Business Partners are available for application and installation support. For System/370 and System/390 (TM) customers, the Micro Channel 370 is an excellent SAA (TM) application platform within a large distributed network or an excellent dedicated application system. Extensive remote operation and remote management facilities may allow users to effectively leverage the current central site skills and software investment with distributed networks. Connectivity options, including Ethernet (1), IBM Token-Ring, SNA communications up to 64Kbps, programmable communications, and PS/2 BiProcessing functions (on BiProcessing models), make the Micro Channel 370 a highly flexible system. Battery backup, alternate IML, automatic restart and dynamic reconfiguration increase systems availability. The Micro Channel 370 may replace Series/1 (TM) and 8100 systems. The Micro Channel 370 offers remote operations capabilities that are attractive and practical for customers with large networks of Series/1 or 8100 systems installed. Experienced IBM Business Partners are available to help. System performance, programmable communications, and many attachment options make the Micro Channel 370 a suitable replacement for Series/1 systems with complex communications. EDX application support may allow some Series/1 users to continue to use existing applications while adding new ones on the BiProcessor models. Existing 8100 users may take advantage of DPPX/370 to move applications to the Micro Channel 370.
