PRODUCT POSITIONING The announced product combines the high-performance Pentium PC Server 500 with the specialized PC Server S/390 Microprocessor Complex for the Micro Channel-based PC Server. All I/O is handled by OS/2 running on the Intel Pentium processor in the PC Server. This I/O capability is provided through a collection of device managers (where device drivers exist and the I/O device will be shared with other OS/2 processes) and device drivers (where the device will be dedicated to S/390 processing). This unique server is targeted for S/390 customers with interactive workloads, batch workloads, and/or non-I/O-intensive transaction processing. For this type of environment, the PC Server S/390 provides a viable replace and/or distributed option. A customer workload requiring intensive I/O will not realize the same performance and throughput characteristics as S/390 machines with multiple channels due to the PC Server S/390 having only a single I/O channel. The PC Server System/390 may not be the platform of choice for customers requiring extensive I/O support. Refer to the Planning Information section for customer fit. The announcement material is identified in the Product Positioning section. The PC Server 500 System/390 requires an analog display (6542, 6543, 6553, 6554, or equivalent) for system setup and service. Software Requirements: The following operating systems support the PC Server 500 System/390: Currently marketed versions of VM/ESA, VSE/ESA, and MVS/ESA OS/2 Warp Version 3.0 with WIN-OS/2 and Communication Manager/2 Compatibility: For compatibility information, refer to the product announcement material of the currently offered components of the solutions. The announcement material is identified in the Product Positioning section. The PC Server 500 System/390 contains licensed system programs that include set configuration, set features, and test programs. Some of these system programs are stored in the system ROM, while others are contained on diskette. System BIOS is loaded from a "flash" EPROM on the system board into system memory. This BIOS provides the hardware instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the PC Server 500 System/390 and to maintain compatibility with many software programs currently operating under DOS and OS/2 on the Personal Computer XT(TM), Personal Computer AT(R) and the PS/2 family. However, due to the higher speed of the processors in these models, some timing-sensitive software may require modification. Limitations: For information on limitations of the components of the PC Server 500 System/390, refer to the product announcement material of the currently offered components of the solutions. The announcement material is identified in the Product Positioning section. The PC Server S/390 is a combination of the System/390 and PC Server architectures that provides access and use of both in a single package. The implementation of the S/390 capability in the PC Server S/390 is unique when compared to standard S/390 processors. While the S/390 instructions execute natively on a dedicated CMOS chip on the S/390 Microprocessor Complex, the execution of the S/390's I/O is handled by OS/2 Device Managers and Device Drivers. The PC Server S/390 does not have the ability, for example, to support multiple "channels" attached to the same physical device. This capability exists and is exploited in standard S/390 systems. In this implementation, S/390 devices (tapes and printers) are either channel attached (via S/370 Channel Emulator/A) or emulated on PC devices in a manner that is transparent to the S/390. While this creates an environment with many exciting options for I/O attachment and support, use of the server's I/O resources requires workload planning to achieve good results. Other limiting factors: S/390 functions not supported: ESCON(R), PR/SM(TM), Parallel Sysplex, Coupling Links, Integrated Coupling Migration Facility, Sysplex, Sysplex Timer(R) (ETR), Concurrent PR/SM Maintenance, Dynamic Reconfiguration Management, Vector Facility, Expanded VF Instructions, SIE I/O Assist, Asynchronous Pageout Facility, ICRF, and Asynchronous Data Mover Facility. The PC Server S/390 does not attach to S/390 DASD. VM/ESA provides guest support; however, there is no multiple high-performance guest support provided. Only one guest can run as V=R, additional guests must run as V=V with some performance degradation; V=F is not supported. This does not effect CMS guests. Planning Information Customer Responsibilities: The announced products are designated as customer setup. Customer setup instructions are shipped with the system. Refer to the Related Services (fee-based planning services) section. Configuration Guidelines: Performance planning requires a knowledge of the anticipated workloads for the PC Server S/390. The requirements of the following critical areas need to be understood. Processor utilization Memory utilization DASD storage requirements Tape storage requirements Physical connectivity (number, type, speed) Communications protocols I/O rates Transaction rates Additional I/O requirements Adapters A technical application brief (IBM PC Server 500 System/390 . . . Is it Right for You?) is available. (Refer to the Publication section). It is designed to provide performance information for the areas listed above along with guidelines for evaluating the customer's current configurations in these areas. The objective of this document is to provide assistance to the customer as they evaluate the PC Server 500 System/390 to determine if it will meet their processing needs. To order this publication, contact your IBM representative or call 800-IBM-CALL (426-2255). Relevant Planning Information: Refer to the technical application brief for details. Subject to availability of open slots, a maximum of four SCSI controllers or RAID controllers are supported. Subject to availability of open slots, a maximum of two S/370 Channel Emulator/A Adapter cards are supported for channel attached S/370 and/or S/390 devices. A monitor does not come with the PC Server S/390 and needs to be ordered separately. The recommendation is to use a monitor with at least 1024 x 768 resolution and a high (>70Hz) non-interlaced refresh rate. The IBM 6543, 6544, 6553, and 6554 monitors will take full advantage of the video capabilities provided by the system; however, some applications are less demanding than others, and IBM provides many other monitors that can be used. A printer does not come with the PC Server S/390 and needs to be ordered separately. The range of printers available are numerous and varied. A general guideline is to use a laser type printer, since it will often be serving as the system printer, with capacity and capabilities appropriate for the intended workload. Cable Orders: For cable ordering information, refer to the product announcement material of the currently offered components of the solutions. The announcement material is identified in the Product Positioning section. Installability: The PC Server S/390 requires about one to two hours for installation and initial setup. Installation includes unpacking, set-up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install other adapters, features, and software. PC software can take two to eight hours to install. Installation of a base VM/ESA or VSE/ESA system using the preconfigured starter CD takes about 30 minutes. To install a VM/ESA, VSE/ESA, or MVS/ESA system using currently supported media can take eight hours or more. A softcopy publication, IBM PC Server 500 System/390 Installation, Configuration and User's Guide, provides installation instructions and is shipped with the system.
