OASAS I DISK ARRAY MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE VERSION 2.0 FOR OS/2 2.0 Contents Announcement Letter Number 293-092 dated February 23, 1993 US - Last Revised on February 23, 1993 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability OASAS (1) I Disk Array Management Software Version 2.0 (41G5099) for OS/2 (R) 2.0 manages the disk array subsystem and provides optional fault tolerance, disk spanning and minimized downtime. OASAS I Version 2.0 software supports from three to eight SCSI drives on one to four SCSI adapters as a single array. It can support up to four SCSI adapters and four arrays per system, with a maximum of 27 SCSI drives. When mirroring fault tolerance is implemented, each array has an even number of drives from two to 16 with data capacity of one to eight drives. A non-fault tolerant array can have from two to eight drives. OASAS I Version 2.0 provides the following choices for fault tolerance: o Fault tolerant data striping -- RAID/5 o Mirroring and duplexing -- RAID/1. OASAS I Version 2.0 provides a solution to the requirement of needing low-cost, fault-tolerant storage capabilities on a PS/2 system for mission-critical applications. OASAS I Version 2.0 provides: o Data striping across drives in the array with or without fault tolerance o Mirroring fault tolerance. With the proper hardware, OASAS I Version 2.0 allows replacement and recreation of a single drive without shutting down the system when individual drive enclosures are used. Operating Environment: PS/2 (R) systems. Availability Date: February 23, 1993. (1) Trademark of Integra Technologies, Inc. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. IN BRIEF . . . o Provides multiple disk array fault-tolerant solutions to mission-critical business applications o Supports any standard IBM SCSI adapter and any standard IBM SCSI drive o Provides investment protection for PS/2 systems by adding additional capabilities to the SCSI disk storage subsystem o Increases user productivity by providing better disk storage performance, size and reliability, while decreasing downtime o Allows for greatly improved disk systems management on PS/2 systems by providing many utilities for disk array management Customer Letter Section DESCRIPTION DISK ARRAY CAPABILITIES OASAS I Version 2.0 provides data striping where data can span multiple drives. The user has a choice of data spanning with fault tolerance (RAID/5) and data spanning without fault tolerance (RAID/0). OASAS I Version 2.0 allows the increase of storage requirements from three to eight SCSI drives connected as a single-drive array, or in various configurations in multiple arrays (up to four). This meets the demands of business applications requiring large disk space such as database applications and file servers. ALLOWS INCREMENTAL INCREASE OF STORAGE THROUGH DATA SPANNING Because data can be spanned across multiple drives in OASAS I Version 2.0, data capacity can be increased simply by adding another drive instead of having to replace a drive with one of higher capacity. OASAS I Version 2.0 protects an organizations' investment by increasing existing PS/2 systems storage capabilities by allowing drive arrays from three to eight disks while providing fault-tolerant operations. HIGH AVAILABILITY High availability is provided through the multiple choices of fault tolerance provided with OASAS I Version 2.0. Downtime is also reduced by the ability of OASAS I Version 2.0 to recreate data on a replaced drive online. User productivity is enhanced by the capability of continued operation of the PS/2 storage system, even when there is a failure of a disk drive. Productivity is further enhanced by the ability to recreate the data of the failed drive without shutting down the system. FULL SET OF OASAS I VERSION 2.0 UTILITIES OASAS I Version 2.0 has a full set of utilities for operating the OASAS I Version 2.0 subsystem in conjunction with OS/2 utilities. Systems management is provided through many of the functions and utilities of OASAS I Version 2.0. These capabilities include: o Program installation on OS/2 2.0 system o Formatting of an array o Logging system events o Interfacing to other systems management tools such as SPM/2 o Error message reporting and online help. PRODUCT POSITIONING OASAS I Version 2.0 is designed to provide an entry level software solution to fault tolerance for a single disk drive failure in OS/2 applications using PS/2 systems. OASAS I Version 2.0 provides additional fault tolerance capabilities to IBM OS/2 LAN Server and provides an entry point for fault tolerant drive arrays in non-LAN Server applications. OASAS I Version 2.0 also provides an entry point for applications that require large single volumes of disk storage such as database applications using existing IBM SCSI drives. As a software solution, OASAS I Version 2.0 does not provide concurrent maintenance capabilities without special drive enclosure hardware. OASAS I Version 2.0 can only be used in a OS/2 2.0 environment. OASAS I Version 2.0 complements OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 by providing RAID/5 fault tolerance in addition to the RAID/1 fault tolerance provided by OS/2 LAN Server. With the release of OASAS I Disk Array Management Software Version 2.0 for OS/2 2.0, OASAS I Release 1 (92F1858) will continue to be available for OS/2 1.3 only, and will not be supported on OS/2 2.0. Customers who migrate to OS/2 2.0 will require OASAS I Disk Array Management Software Version 2.0 for OS/2 2.0. Customers who obtained OASAS I Release 1 (92F1858) can receive an upgrade to OASAS I Disk Array Management Software Version 2.0 for OS/2 2.0 for a small fee. Customers remaining on OS/2 1.3 will not be able to realize the benefit of upgrading to OS/2 2.0 and the OASAS I Disk Array Management Software Version 2.0 for OS/2 2.0 package. PUBLICATIONS The publication for OASAS I Version 2.0 is included as part of the program package. It is not available separately. TECHNICAL INFORMATION SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: The minimum hardware configuration for OASAS I Version 2.0 is as follows: o The minimum hardware required by IBM OS/2 2.0 running on the PS/2 systems listed below. For large, single volume disk arrays, additional memory may be required by file system programs such as the OS/2 High Performance File System (HPFS), CHKDSK and CACHE programs. The OASAS I Version 2.0 disk array device driver requires only about 100K of memory. o A standard SCSI adapter (cached or non-cached) is required. An additional SCSI adapter is needed if all the drives for the disk array cannot be attached to the same SCSI adapter with the SCSI device address jumper IDs required by the OASAS I Version 2.0 software. o Connected to this SCSI adapter is the disk array, which consists of three to seven SCSI fixed disks. If there is not enough space in the PS/2 for all the hard drives, an IBM PS/2 SCSI Storage Enclosure (#3510) or an IBM PS/2 External Storage Enclosure for SCSI Devices (#3511) containing the rest of the hard drives in the array will be needed. OASAS I Version 2.0 supports the following hardware: o Personal System/2 (R) 386 System Units: - PS/2 Model 56 SX (8556) - PS/2 Model 56 SLC (TM) (8556) - PS/2 Model 56 SLC2 (8556) - PS/2 Model 57 SX (8557) - PS/2 Model 57 SLC (8557) - PS/2 Model 57 SLC2 (8557) - PS/2 Model 70 386 (8570) - PS/2 Model 70 386 (8570) Model A21 with the PS/2 486/25 Power Platform - PS/2 Model 76 486 (8576) - PS/2 Model 77 486 (8577) - PS/2 Model 77 486 DX2 (8577) - PS/2 Model 80 386 (8580) - PS/2 Model 80 386 (8580) - PS/2 Model 85 486 (9585) - PS/2 Model 90 486 (8590) - PS/2 Model 95 486 (8595, 9595). o Personal System/55 386 System Units (Japan): - Personal System/55 Model 5550 SI/T1/V1 - Personal System/55 Model 5560 W - Personal System/55 Model 5570 T1/V1 - Personal System/55 Model 5580 Y. o Fixed Disks Supported: - PS/2 100MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drive - PS/2 200MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drive - PS/2 160MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drive - PS/2 320MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drive - PS/2 400MB SCSI Fixed Disk Drive - PS/2 1GB SCSI Fixed Disk Drive. o Other: - GEARBOX (R) Model 800 (#7568) - 7546 Industrial Computer - PS/2 SCSI Storage Enclosure (#3510) - PS/2 External Storage Enclosure for SCSI Devices (#3511) - PS/2 Micro Channel (R) SCSI Adapter (#1018) - PS/2 Micro Channel SCSI Adapter with Cache (#1005). PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: OASAS I Version 2.0 requires: o Fix to APAR #PJ06638 and APAR #PJ06643 o OS/2 2.0 or 2.0.1 with level equal to, or higher than, XR02005 or later releases. o If any partition in any OASAS I array is greater than 4GB in size, the fix to OS/2 APAR #PJ06497 must be installed. LIMITATIONS: o OS/2 2.0 or 2.0.1 is required with level equal to, or higher than, XR02005, or later releases. o If any partition in any OASAS I array is greater than 4GB in size, the fix to OS/2 APAR #PJ06497 must be installed. PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS: The OASAS I Version 2.0 Disk Array Management Software tolerates any single disk array drive failure with the implementation of RAID/5 and RAID/1 (mirror) technologies. Since the primary goal of RAID is to provide data redundancy, most applications should run with about the same response time compared to a non-disk array configuration. However, in certain heavily loaded environments with excessive writes, applications may run two to three times slower in a RAID/5 disk array configuration than a non-disk array configuration. This is favorable compared to a RAID/3 configuration such as data guarding, which in extreme cases can degrade response time by a factor of up to 15 times. Applications that are timing dependent and already tuned to an existing environment may need to be reconfigured to reflect the increased response time of a disk array. With a failed drive in a six-drive RAID/5 array, the estimated overall performance degradation is negligible compared to normal disk array operation. For applications environments where fault tolerance is not required, OASAS I Version 2.0 has the option to disable fault tolerant parity. Disabling parity on the disk array improves the performance for write-intensive applications. (A data striped disk array without fault tolerance is known as RAID/0.) The user has the option to enable fault tolerance. PLANNING INFORMATION INSTALLABILITY: INSTALLI is the utility used for installing OASAS I Version 2.0.
