However, the limitations of the 'client machine' as described in AIX Version 3 for RISC System/6000 (refer to Programming Announcement 290-068, dated February 15, 1990) are still in effect and should be reviewed. As a client, the POWERstation 320H has limited user disk space available and is dependent on a LAN-attached IBM AIX server for data and program storage. Configured with 320MB of disk storage or more, the POWERstation 320H is a powerful stand-alone graphics workstation, with optional LAN and other communications capabilities. The POWERserver 320H is the entry server in the RISC System/6000 family when equipped with a minimum of 320MB of internal disk storage. PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: AIX Version 3 for RISC System/6000 (5756-030) with the current update available March 29, 1991. COMPATIBILITY: The POWERstation/POWERserver 320H uses the same external interfaces as the POWERstation/POWERserver 320. LIMITATIONS: A minimum of 16MB of memory is a prerequisite for the 320E processor upgrade. Customers will be responsible for procuring the additional memory necessary to attain the 16MB minimum memory requirement and to attain any of the larger memory configurations supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 320, 320E and 320H, to the extent the memory is larger than the customer's current memory. MODEL CONVERSIONS: Customers of the POWERstation/POWERserver 320 will be able to upgrade their system's processor to that of the new POWERstation/POWERserver 320H. The POWERstation/POWERserver 320E will be the new designation for the POWERstation/POWERserver 320 after the model conversion. IBM fixed disk configurations supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 320 upon announcement will be supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 320E. A minimum of 16MB of memory is a prerequisite for the 320E processor upgrade. All Micro Channel cards currently supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 320 are also supported on the POWERstation/POWERserver 320E, after the model conversion. All Micro Channel cards, external and internal devices supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 320H upon announcement will be supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 320E. System performance of the POWERstation/POWERserver 320E relative to the new POWERstation/POWERserver 320H will depend upon the installed fixed disks. Customers whose converted machine contains only IBM fixed disk configurations supported by the new POWERstation/POWERserver 320H should not experience performance degradation. Retention in the converted machines of IBM fixed disks not supported by the new POWERstation/POWERserver 320H will yield a degradation in system performance relative to the new POWERstation/POWERserver 320H, varying with the nature of customer's applications (compute-intensive versus I/O intensive). This offers a high degree of flexibility in increasing the performance level of the system and helping the customers with compute-intensive applications to take advantage of the performance the new processor offers while protecting their investment in fixed disks.
