DESCRIPTION BUSINESS SOLUTIONS The RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 340 and 350 support the customer's varied business objectives by providing high-performance 33MHz and 41MHz processor-based desktop workstation/server solutions for compute-intensive technical applications or multi-user commercial server applications. The POWERstation/POWERserver 350 establishes a new plateau of performance for IBM's superscaler-designed POWER Architecture-based high-end desktop workstations with a 41MHz processor. 32MB of memory and a 160MB fixed disk are standard in the LAN-dependent POWERstation/POWERserver 350. The LAN-dependent POWERstation/POWERserver 340 utilizes a 33MHz processor, 16MB of memory and a 160MB fixed disk in the base configuration. The POWERstation/POWERserver 340 and 350 with the standard 160MB fixed disk is a dataless LAN-dependent attached workstation that can be 'booted-up' from an IBM server with AIX/6000 (TM). The 160MB fixed disk is the minimum required to perform paging. Software preload is not available on these dependent systems. The 340 and 350 with optional fixed disk features (minimum of 400MB) can be used in a variety of server and workstation applications. Memory capacity of up to 128MB and internal fixed disk capacity of up to 800MB, coupled with the current wide variety of input/output devices, graphics and communications features, are available to configure the POWERstation/POWERserver 340 and 350 as a powerful system for a wide range of business solutions. The RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 340 and 350 and the AIX Version 3.2 for RISC System/6000 operating system conform to many of the industry standards in the open system environment -- a key factor to enable the customer to develop and port applications. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. INVESTMENT PROTECTION The IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 340 and 350 binary compatibility with previously announced RISC System/6000 systems helps to protect the customer's investment in software and hardware. The POWERstation/POWERserver 340 and 350 and the AIX Version 3.2 for RISC System/6000 operating system offer interoperability with other IBM and other vendor host systems, helping to protect the customer's principal investment. The POWERstation/POWERserver 340 can be converted to a POWERstation/POWERserver 350 when an increase in performance is desired. USER PRODUCTIVITY The POWERstation/POWERserver 340 and 350 offer performance gains over the POWERstation/POWERserver 320 and 320H. The integrated SCSI controller and integrated Ethernet interface offers additional expansion capability over the POWERstation/POWERserver 320 and 320H. AIXwindows (TM) Environment/6000, based on the versatile OSF/Motif (1) graphical user interface, provides the user with a iconic view of the AIX file system and allows the user to manipulate the file system through icons. InfoExplorer (TM) support offers the user flexible access to online documentation using task index, hypertext jump points and search features. (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (1) Trademark of the Open Software Foundation. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT A system installation and management facility is provided as part of the operating system. The System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) facilitates the performance of system management tasks, such as software installation and configuration, device configuration and management, problem determination and storage management. Support is also provided for the use of an ASCII terminal as the system console and remote installation of the system on a LAN. GROWTH ENABLEMENT The RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 340 and 350 is designed to grow with the customer's needs. The standard memory of 16MB on the Model 340 can be increased to 128MB. The standard memory of 32MB on the Model 350 can also be increased to 128MB. Two memory card slots are available to yield 128MB with two 64MB memory cards. The internal disk drive capacity is expandable up to 800MB with 160MB standard. The POWERstation/POWERserver 340 and 350 contain one integrated SCSI controller and one integrated Ethernet adapter as standard features. These features are integrated into the processor board and do not occupy any of the four Micro Channel feature card slots which are available for additional features such as SCSI controllers, communication processors and graphics processors. NOTE: MB is 1,048,576 bytes (two to the twentieth power) when referring to memory; in all other cases it is 1,000,000 (ten to the sixth power). GB is 1,073,741,824 bytes (two to the thirtieth power) when referring to memory; in all other cases it is 1,000,000,000 (ten to the ninth power).
