It provides outstanding integer, floating-point and transaction processing levels exceeding previously announced models and introduces a new category of high-end rack systems. The Model 990 is a natural growth machine for: o Commercial servers o Numerically-intensive compute servers o High-availability clusters. The 14ns 71.5MHz CMOS processor with 256KB data cache and 32KB instruction cache provides a new level of performance. A Model 990 base configuration includes a 5GB 8 mm tape, a 4GB disk, a CD-ROM-2 drive, two 80MB/sec Micro Channel (R) busses providing fifteen available slots, integrated SCSI, a SCSI-2 controller adapter, and battery backup as standard. The processor chips are made in .7-micron, 4-level metal/1-level polysilicon CMOS 4S and are packaged on a single multichip ceramic module. The primary features of the system are the following: o A 32KB two-way-set associative instruction cache and a multiport 256KB four-way-set associative data cache. o Dual fixed point execution units and dual floating-point multiply-add-divide units. The architecture has been improved by the addition of a new quad word floating-point load/store instruction, convert to integer instruction, square root instruction, new address translation, and a new interrupt structure. o Hardware performance monitors accessible by software. o The memory interface is either four or eight words wide and supports memory up to 2GB. o Binary compatible with previous IBM RISC System/6000 systems. RISC SYSTEM/6000 POWERSERVER MODEL 990 The RISC System/6000 POWERserver Model 990 uses POWER2 technology to provide greater performance levels than previous rack models. It is a high-end open systems server with emphasis on performance. The 14ns 71.5Hz CMOS processor with 256KB data cache and 32KB instruction cache will provide a new level of performance. This, coupled with two 80MB/sec Micro Channels busses providing sixteen standard slots (one slot occupied by the SCSI-2 controller), internal SCSI and standard SCSI-2 controllers, 4GB disk, CD-ROM-2 drive, 5GB 8 mm tape, and battery backup standard, and a full range of optional features makes RISC System/6000 POWERserver Model 990 a powerful open systems commercial/compute server. INCREASED CAPACITY/PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT Customers can now enjoy greater capacity and performance than previously available on RISC System/6000 rack systems.
