Purchase Price: $1,370 (SSA 4-Port Adapter) Planned Availability Date: October 20, 1995 (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation DESCRIPTION IBM 7133 SSA Disk Subsystem and SSA 4-Port Adapter Enhancements The previously announced IBM 7133 and SSA 4-Port Adapter can now be used in high-availability configurations using HACMP/6000 Version 3.1.1 with AIX Version 3.2.5. They are supported in a 2-way HACMP environment. The SSA 4-Port Adapter provides two pairs of serial ports for the attachment of storage devices such as hard disk drives. The serial ports conform to SSA, Level 1. Each port operates at 20MB/sec full duplex, using point-to-point copper cables up to 25 meters long. Transmissions to several destinations are multiplexed, and the effective bandwidth is further increased by spatial reuse of the individual links. This means that disk commands to a disk in a subsystem are automatically sent from disk to disk on the loop until the target disk receives the command. While this is occurring, another disk command can be issued before any acknowledgement is received. Each of the two pairs of SSA ports can attach up to 48 dual-port devices (disk) in a closed loop. If the loop is broken by a fault, the two ports continue to access the devices using the remaining connections as a string. However, it is not intended that the devices should be initially configured as a string. These features support fault-tolerant applications. The adapter is a Micro Channel Bus Master capable of streaming data transfers at 40MB/sec or 80MB/sec. The IBM 7133 and SSA 4-Port Adapter are now supported on RS/6000 Models G30, J01, J30, R30, and R3U. IPL from the IBM 7133 is now supported on RS/6000 Models 591 and R21, running AIX Version 4.1.4, or later. Note: SSA is a proposed industry-standard interface that retains the SCSI-2 commands, queuing model, status, and sense bytes. PCI Adapter Support for IBM 7131 Multi-Storage Tower Model 105 Attaching the 7131 Multi-Storage Tower Model 105 to RS/6000 models that use the PCI interface is now supported through the PCI SCSI-2 SE Fast/Wide Adapter and PCI SCSI-2 Differential Fast/Wide Adapter. Some of the more important benefits to be gained from the SSA architecture over other storage interfaces such as SCSI are: * 96 disks per adapter * Loop architecture reconfigures around points of failure on the loop * Spatial reuse of individual links Support for the IBM 7131 SCSI Multi-Storage Tower Model 105 attached to PCI SCSI-2 SE Fast/Wide Adapter and PCI SCSI-2 Differential Fast/Wide Adapter enables attachment of the subsystem to RS/6000 models that support the PCI interface. The IBM 7131-105 is a stand-alone expansion tower that provides additional storage. The number of supported devices provides flexible and economical expansion while protecting any investment in tape media. The tower can provide up to 31.5GB of storage in a compact space. Using two towers, a customer can mirror data to provide a low-cost backup solution. STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION IBM intends to provide support for high-availability configurations of the SSA 4-port Adapter with the 7133 SSA Disk Subsystem in early 1996. It is IBM's current intent to support configurations of SSA storage subsystems with attachment to RS/6000 uniprocessors, SMP (Symmetric Multiprocessor) and Scalable POWERparallel Systems (SP) machines running on AIX Version 4.1.4, or later, and HACMP Version 4.1, or later. PUBLICATIONS Revised versions of existing product publications are shipped with the product. There are no new publications. TECHNICAL INFORMATION Specified Operating Environment Physical Specifications Feature Number 6214 SSA 4-Port Adapter: SSA 4-Port Adapter provides SSA connections that can be configured to provide two SSA loops. Each loop supports the attachment of up to 48 devices (96 devices per adapter). Each adapter supports attachment of up to six maximum configuration IBM 7133 (96 drives) for a total disk drive capacity of 432GB, using 4.5GB disk drives.
