Compiler options (-qarch and -qtune) allow the programmer to target program execution to a specific processor architecture or the common instruction set that runs on all RISC System/6000 processors. Programs written in XL C Compiler 1.2 are upwardly compatible with XL C Compiler 1.3. XL C Compiler 1.3 conforms to the following standards: - FIPS PUB 160 - ANSI/ISO-IEC 9899-1990/1992 - ISO/IEC 9899:1990(E) - SAA C level 2 (with exceptions documented in the AIX XL Compiler/6000 Language Reference). XL C Compiler is enhanced to support: - Generation of assembly files - Storing constants in read-only memory - Adding static and unreferenced variables to symbol table - Specifying search sequence of include files. o InfoExplorer V1.3/ILS Support The InfoExplorer information retrieval application is enhanced to provide users with improved usability, additional function and increased library support. Key enhancements include: o International Language Support - Multiple-Byte Character Set Enablement - Interleaf-J Authoring Environment Support - AIX Documentation Offered in Japanese Language o Motif 1.2 User Interface o Backwards Compatibility Users can view InfoExplorer 1.2 and 1.3 softcopy documentation data bases. o Multiple Library Support - Users can change libraries within application - Users can install and remove libraries within InfoExplorer application o Incremental Update Support - Users can view inline updates to AIX softcopy documentation - Updates are marked by Iconized Notes in softcopy text o Database support expands from 15 to 64 databases The following performance tools are enhanced as follows: o tprof is easier to use and provides the capability to profile kernel extensions, stripped executables and stripped libraries. o rmss supports VMM enhancements. o A new flag allows svmon to display statistics showing the number of real memory frames with reference bits on. svmon also supports VMM enhancements. o filemon adds support for new disk types and devices; a new flag allows filemon to monitor files opened prior to the start of the trace daemon. o netpmon added support for new devices, changed reports to give number of bytes transferred instead of number of bytes requested, and can now monitor sendmsg and recvmsg calls. More detailed descriptions of the tools are contained in the AIX PERFORMANCE MONITORING AND TUNING GUIDE. o TCP/IP performance enhancements based on RFC1323. These enhancements increase performance for customers with high bandwidth adapters. Named update to BIND 4.8.3 and new nslookup and traceroute commands SNMP PROXY AGENT (SMUX) SUPPORT The SNMP proxy agent support, shipped as sample code in AIX/6000 Version 3.2 allows customers to extend the standard agent functions to support non-standard system management objects through the definition of private MIB variables. This function is a part of the standard supported product. FIBER DISTRIBUTED DATA INTERFACE (FDDI) STATION MANAGEMENT (SMT) 7.2 FDDI SMT is upgraded to the industry-standard SMT 7.2 level. OPEN SYSTEMS STANDARD AIX Version 3.2.5 for RISC System/6000 is now in line with the new version of Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 151, the U.S. Government's specification for a portable operating system. The guidelines are specified in the FIPS 151-2. AIX Version 3.2.5 for RISC System/6000 will be submitted for testing to obtain formal certification with the specification. VISUAL SYSTEMS MANAGER FEATURE This feature delivers a highly usable framework and initial function for the primary system management tasks. The purpose of the framework is to provide a common look and feel to the system administrator in the completion of their daily tasks. It provides an object-based, application oriented interface using standard direct manipulation of user and system defined objects in a graphical display of information. The application orientation is to provide the necessary structure and context to the user for them to understand and use the objects. The framework provides an extendable base from which all administrator functions may be performed in an easy-to-use environment. It is suitable for novice and casual users of AIX systems to perform necessary system administration tasks. The applications and function supported in the initial release include: o Users and Group Manager -- to perform the tasks of adding and managing user and group IDs o Storage Manager -- to perform tasks related to defining and managing the units of storage including physical volumes, logical volumes, volume groups and file systems o Device Manager -- to perform tasks related to the definition and management of physical devices attached to the system o Print Manager -- to perform tasks related to the definition and management of printers and print queues. STATEMENTS OF GENERAL DIRECTION IBM announces the following statements of intent: o To provide the ability to run Microsoft (2) Windows applications (using Wabi (3)) on AIX o The ability to run Apple Macintosh (4) applications on the AIX/6000 operating system o A new AIX/6000 desktop. IBM intends to provide customers the ability to execute Microsoft Windows applications (using Wabi) on AIX/6000. IBM also intends to provide customers the capability to execute Apple Macintosh applications on AIX/6000. These two application environments are part of IBM's continuing commitment to provide customers flexibility in their choice of applications and to help protect customers' current application investments. The new application environments, and additions to current offerings, provide customers the ability to run DOS applications and existing AIX applications based on the AIX/6000 operating system. IBM intends to integrate these application environments into the AIX/6000 desktop. IBM also intends to provide a new graphic desktop on the AIX/6000 operating system. This desktop is intended to be the next generation graphic user environment for the AIX/6000 operating system. This desktop offering will be based on the Common Desktop Environment being developed within the common open software environment process. These statements represent IBM's current intent and are subject to change or withdrawal. IBM is strongly committed to AIX leadership in support of industry standards and open system specifications. IBM intends to broaden its capabilities by formally submitting a future version of AIX for the RISC System/6000 for X/Open (5) Portability Guide Issue 4 (XPG4) branding in 1994. XPG4 is the fourth release of X/Open's specifications that define an open systems environment. X/Open is an international, non-profit corporation focused on unifying standards issues in open systems environments. The X/Open portability guides assist software and system developers by providing them with the information on the functions and interfaces users have identified as requirements for open systems. These statements represent IBM's current intent and are subject to change or withdrawal. (2) Registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation. (3) Trademark of Sun Microsystems, Inc.
