    Title

    IBM ARTIC960 CO-PROCESSOR PLATFORM

    Abstract

The ARTIC960 is a high-speed, high through-put coprocessor adapter with multiple memory options. This adapter is designed to operate in 32-bit Micro Channel(R) compatible systems. ARTIC960 relieves the host from tasks associated with I/O communication applications and protocols. It also provides busmaster capabilities for peer to peer transfers across the Micro Channel. The ARTIC960's wide bandwidth provides coprocessor performance much higher than that of previously available IBM realtime interface coprocessors.

Included in this announcement is a high-speed 4-Port Multi-interface Application Interface Board (AIB), which is a daughter board that offers either EIA-232, EIA-530 (RS422), ISO 4903 (X.21) or ISO 4902 (V.36) electrical interfaces for generalized applications. Four matching interface cables allow the user to select the interface desired.

    Description

The ARTIC960 is a high-speed, high through-put coprocessor adapter with multiple memory options. This adapter is designed to operate in 32-bit Micro Channel compatible systems. The ARTIC960 relieves the host from tasks associated with I/O communication applications and protocols. It also provides busmaster capabilities for peer to peer transfers across the Micro Channel. The ARTIC960's wide bandwidth provides coprocessor performance much higher than that of previously available IBM realtime interface coprocessors.

The ARTIC960 is intended to be used either as a complete feature with its optional AIB or as a coprocessor platform by third parties who develop their own applications and/or AIBs. A Developer's Kit is offered which provides AIB design information, sample programs, a programmer's guide and reference, and a hardware technical reference manual. As part of the Developer's Kit a Developer's Assistance Program (DAP) provides technical Q&A service supported by telephone and E-mail.

Included in this announcement is a high-speed 4-Port Multi-interface AIB that offers either EIA-232, EIA-530 (RS422), ISO 4903 (X.21) or ISO 4902 (V.36) electrical interfaces for generalized applications. Four matching interface cables allow the user to select the interface desired.

The ARTIC960 is ideally suited for applications in credit card banking, satellite high-speed data retrieval, telephony, airline reservation systems, graphic imaging, and for network routers and generalized local area network (LAN) applications ranging from X.25 to integrated services digital network (ISDN) to Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM).

Increased Processor Performance and Communication Speeds

The ARTIC960 provides a significant increase in data throughput across the Micro Channel when compared to the existing family of IBM realtime interface coprocessors. The 4-Port Multi-interface Application Interface Board handles four lines of communications data at 2.048 Mbps.

Business Solutions - Enable Customer's Competitive Advantage

The ARTIC960 performance improvements allow users to install one adapter where four adapters would have been required before. Four 2.048 Mbps high-speed communication lines have not been available until now, and ARTIC960 provides increased bandwidth capabilities.

The ARTIC960 will assume the operating environment of the host system. Radio Frequency Interference Statement: ARTIC960 complies with the United States FCC class A, ECC CISPR-A, and Japan VCCI-1 RFI standards.

    Machine Requirements

The ARTIC960 adapter requires a 32-bit slot in the following Micro Channel machines:

    PS/2 machine types 8580, 8590, 9576, 9577, 9585, and 9595, and Industrial Computer machine types 7546, 7561, 7562, and 7568-D40.

    Programming Requirements

Application programs written for the ARTIC960 will operate most efficiently using the operating kernel and system drivers provided.

The ARTIC960 firmware is DBCS enabled.

    Compatibility

Although the ARTIC960 operating kernel and supporting code is functionally equivalent to the existing family of IBM realtime interface coprocessors, the ARTIC960 operating kernel and system support code is designed for the Intel 80960 processor.

    Limitations

There is no limitation on the quantity of ARTIC960 cards per system other than 32-bit Micro Channel long slot availability and the amount of power furnished by the system. A typical ARTIC960 adapter, without the AIB, draws 12.5 watts of 5VDC power. The Multi-interface AIB draws an additional 3.7 watts.

    Memory

The adapter is designed with two memory banks. The instruction memory is 1MB large and is soldered in place. The other memory bank or data memory (also referred to as "packet") is provided in the form of a selectable pluggable SIMM package. The SIMM sizes are 1, 4, 8, and 16MB, with the card designed to accept a 32MB SIMM. A SIMM must be installed for the ARTIC960 to operate.

    Planning Information

    Customer Responsibilities

The customer is responsible for the unpacking, installing and setting up the adapter per the instructions provided.

    Cable Orders

IBM recommends that one of the following cables be ordered with the 4-Port AIB. The cable selection determines the four ports of electrical interface of the AIB. Other interface cables can be ordered at published prices. Each cable is 1.8 meters in length and has four connectors in a fanout fashion terminating into a 100-pin connector that plugs onto the AIB.
