It is expandable up to a maximum of 8MB, using optional memory kits. The adapter memory may be configured from 0.5MB to 8MB by using either the 0.5MB Memory Module Kit or the 2MB Memory Module Kit. The IBM Personal System/2 0-8MB Expanded Memory Adapter/A can be installed in any open expansion slot of the IBM PS/2 Model 50 or 60 and is easily set up since it contains no jumpers or hardware switches. An additional feature is an on-board ROM that contains a power-on self test (POST) and microcode to initialize the card. The IBM Personal System/2 0-8MB Expanded Memory Adapter/A provides support for two different operating modes: expanded memory and extended memory. When used as expanded memory with the IBM 3270 Workstation Program Version 1.1 or with the LIM EMS Version 3.2 device drivers, the IBM Personal System/2 0-8MB Expanded Memory Adapter/A enables the IBM PS/2 Models 50 and 60 to use more memory than it can address by indirectly accessing memory beyond base memory by swapping memory addresses and switching blocks of memory. The IBM Personal System/2 0-8MB Expanded Memory Adapter/A provides an expanded memory function (expandable up to 8MB) for the IBM PS/2 Models 50 and 60. In addition, the IBM Personal System/2 0-8MB Expanded Memory Adapter/A may be utilized as extended memory with the IBM OS/2 Standard and Extended Editions Versions 1.0 and 1.1. The added function of memory expansion up to 8MB per adapter allows for improved system configuration with a limited number of expansion slots. By installing two adapters, populated to 8MB each, a user can reach the system address limit of 16MB for the IBM PS/2 Models 50 and 60. Memory for the adapter is sold separately. A user must purchase and install optional memory kits to achieve memory configurations from 0.5MB to 8MB per adapter. A maximum of four memory kits of either the 0.5MB Memory Module Kit or the 2MB Memory Module Kit (or a combination of the two kits) may be installed on a single card. Multiple cards may be used when the IBM Personal System/2 0-8MB Expanded Memory Adapter/A is used as extended memory. 0.5MB MEMORY MODULE KIT (30F5348, #3397): Expands the memory capacity of the IBM Personal System/2 0-8MB Expanded Memory Adapter/A in increments of 512KB up to a maximum of 2MB per adapter. Each kit consists of two 256KB memory modules inserted into memory module sockets on the adapter. A maximum of four kits can be added to each adapter and the kits are customer installable. The 0.5MB Memory Module Kit may be installed with the 2MB Memory Module Kit on the same card, as long as the memory modules are installed in pairs on the four socket banks on the adapter. 2MB MEMORY MODULE KIT (30F5360, #7833): Expands the memory capacity of the IBM Personal System/2 0-8MB Expanded Memory Adapter/A and IBM Personal System/2 80286 Expanded Memory Adapter/A in increments of 2MB up to a maximum of 8MB per adapter. Each kit consists of two 1024KB memory modules inserted into memory module sockets on the adapter. A maximum of four kits can be added to each adapter and the kits are customer installable. The 2MB Memory Module Kit may be installed with the 0.5MB Memory Module Kit on the same card as long as the memory modules are installed in pairs on the four socket banks on the adapter. Installation of the 2MB Memory Module Kit on the IBM Personal System/2 80286 Expanded Memory Adapter/A will require removing a pair of installed 256KB memory modules before inserting the 1024KB memory modules in their place. The removed modules will be retained by the customer.
