Customer Letter Section HIGHLIGHTS o A customer-installed feature, that enables direct touch input on IBM 8513 Color Displays, protects investment in installed displays. o Enables solutions for individuals who are not familiar with computers or keyboards, thereby increasing user productivity and enabling growth into new business areas. o Leadership features include the ability to use any input medium (finger, stylus, etc.) and to measure varying pressures exerted on the screen. o Device drivers for IBM DOS, OS/2 and Microsoft Windows 3.0 provide compatibility with applications created for the IBM PS/2 8516 Touch Display. o System attachment is provided via the PS/2 system unit pointing device port, eliminating the need for a serial port, expansion slot or external controller. DESCRIPTION BUSINESS SOLUTIONS The IBM TouchSelect significantly enhances PS/2 multimedia solutions and the PS/2 product family by providing the capability for interactive operation by direct touch. The IBM TouchSelect enables solutions for work and public areas where staff and customers are not familiar with computers or keyboards, especially in environments such as education, training and public access (for example, merchandising, point-of-sale and information kiosks). INVESTMENT PROTECTION The IBM TouchSelect enables a customer to upgrade installed IBM PS/2 8513 Color Displays to facilitate touch applications. This protects the customer's investment in existing displays. The IBM TouchSelect attaches securely to the front of the display using four mechanical latches, located on the sides of the IBM TouchSelect panel. The aesthetic design (size, color and texture) matches the design of the 8513, minimizing the effect of the IBM TouchSelect panel on the overall appearance of the display. Full compatibility with IBM DOS, OS/2 and Microsoft Windows 3.0 operating systems enables existing non-touch screen applications to run without modification. The IBM TouchSelect is fully compatible with touch screen applications created for the IBM PS/2 8516 Touch Display. As a component of an appropriate multimedia system, the IBM TouchSelect also supports applications generated for the InfoWindow (R) 4055 Touch Display. Compatibility with these two products enables customers to provide existing touch screen applications to more end-users without the purchase of a new display. Neither a system unit expansion slot nor a serial port are required since all of the touch screen function is contained within the touch panel. The IBM TouchSelect attaches to the pointing device port on the IBM PS/2 system unit. An IBM PS/2 Mouse can be attached to the auxiliary pointing device port located on the IBM TouchSelect. As a result of this arrangement, the touch screen and mouse can operate concurrently in any application written to support this configuration. USER PRODUCTIVITY The IBM TouchSelect provides ease-of-use for the IBM PS/2 or IBM multimedia user. Less experienced computer users are able to improve productivity by accessing data through simple touch screen interaction with the system. The IBM TouchSelect uses a pressure transducer technology which provides the following distinguishing productivity features: o Unlike other touch screen technologies, any touch input medium (finger, stylus, etc.) can be used without exception. o In addition to horizontal and vertical screen coordinates, the application programmer can make use of a third dimension capability. This capability enables the system to measure varying pressures exerted on the screen. GROWTH ENABLEMENT The IBM TouchSelect enables the customer to grow into new business areas accessible by the utilization of an interactive screen, but inaccessible to key-input based systems. PRODUCT POSITIONING The IBM TouchSelect should be positioned as a quality PS/2 product in a growing market seeking displays with touch screen operation. The ability for the customer to install the IBM TouchSelect on an existing display differentiates the product from the IBM PS/2 8516 Touch Display, which is an integrated touch display that requires no screen overlay. The IBM TouchSelect, when attached to a IBM PS/2 8513 Color Display, can be operated in a variety of touch screen applications, such as merchandising, educational applications or executive support, without requiring input from a mouse or keyboard. The IBM TouchSelect is appropriate for users and applications associated the following industries: o Distribution o Manufacturing o Process o Education o Insurance o Banking o Securities o Law Enforcement o Public Sector o Automotive o Health. STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION IBM intends to provide IBM TouchSelect support in a variety of sizes to support additional IBM PS/2 color displays. PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: DEVICE DRIVERS FOR TOUCH OPERATION Device drivers for touch operation are supplied with the product for operation under the following operating systems: o IBM Disk Operating System Versions 3.3, 4.0 and 5.0 o IBM Operating System/2 (R) Standard Edition Versions 1.2 and 1.3 or IBM Operating System/2 Extended Edition Versions 1.2 and 1.3 - Presentation Manager (R) Single-button mouse emulation (identify and select) can be used for some Presentation Manager actions. A mouse or keyboard is still required for actions normally assigned to mouse button 2. The services of Presentation Manger may be used to reach an application that uses an OS/2 full screen session, and such an application may be written to operate in touch sensing mode. A Presentation Manager window application that chooses to operate in full touch sensing mode as opposed to mouse emulation mode must be aware that the application has full control of the touch device. The application is therefore responsible for translating the full screen touch coordinates to the coordinates of the Presentation Manager window. NOTE: For supported operating systems, the IBM TouchSelect will operate in either single-button PS/2 mouse emulation mode (identify and select) or full sensing mode (all parameters returned). This is determined by the calls made to the touch device driver by the application software. o Microsoft Windows 3.0 APPLICATION SUPPORT The IBM TouchSelect is supported by several enablers and applications, including: o Enablers: Enablers are authoring and presentation software packages that give the customer the tools to prepare very sophisticated presentations that integrate images and text, including full-motion video and voice, if desired. - IBM M-Control Program/2 The IBM M-Control Program/2 which includes program interfaces for IBM Disk Operating System and OS/2 Toolkit, provides functional support for application developers. - Audio Visual Connection Releases 1.03 and 1.04 Audio Visual Connection is an application enabler for presentations including still-frame video, full-motion video, digitized video and hypertext. o Applications: - IBM Executive Decisions/VM and IBM Executive Decisions/MVS: These products provide a touch screen interface to business information, external news sources, electronic mail, address book and calendar information.
