IBM PS/2 IMAGE-I ADAPTER/A IBM Announcement Letter Number 193-220 dated July 29, 1993 IBM US - Last Revised on July 29, 1993 Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability The PS/2 (R) Image-I Adapter/A provides additional function and front-of-screen performance over the existing IBM PS/2 Image Adapter/A family of display adapters. The Image-I adapter offers an enhanced screen resolution of 1600 x 1280 and comes standard with 3MB of memory. New higher screen refresh rate and non-interlaced scanning enhance ergonomic benefits to the customer as "flicker free" (1) performance even at high resolutions (1600 x 1280). The Image-I Adapter/A conforms with industry and government standards, such as International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Standard 9241 Part 3. It has been designed to support the ISO compliant modes of the following displays: o IBM 9504 Monochrome Monitor (2) o IBM 6091-016 Color Display o IBM 6091-19i Color Display o IBM 1091 Color Display o IBM 9517 Color Display. Purchase Price: $1,200 (#5501). Planned Availability Date: July 29, 1993. (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation. (1) Image-I Adapter/A meets the ISO Standard 9241 Part 3 requirement to be free of flicker to at least 90% of the user population. (2) Refer to Product Announcement 193-221, dated July 29, 1993. IN BRIEF . . . o Meets ISO standards for front-of-screen quality (non-interlaced support) o Higher refresh rates -- up to 77Hz o Increased screen resolution -- 1600 x 1280 o 3MB video RAM standard Customer Letter Section DESCRIPTION IMPROVED WORKER PRODUCTIVITY Today's widespread move to applications based on graphical user interfaces (GUI) and higher screen resolutions places greater demand on the ergonomic design of the visual subsystems. High-resolution graphics modes and white-screen backgrounds can promote noticeable screen flicker, a condition that may affect user productivity. Flicker, however, can be reduced by increasing the screen refresh rate -- the number of times per second that the screen image is redrawn. Flicker can also be reduced by non-interlaced scanning or drawing the whole screen image in one pass. Reducing screen flicker can improve user productivity. The PS/2 Image-I Adapter/A supports higher refresh rates up to 77Hz for use with appropriate monitors. Also, the Image-I Adapter/A now supports non-interlaced scanning in 1600 x 1280 mode. Higher refresh rates and non-interlaced scanning combine to enhance usability and potential productivity gains. PRODUCT POSITIONING The PS/2 Image-I Adapter/A introduces to the PS/2 an ISO enabled high-resolution display capability especially suited for image applications and the technical professional. Combined with the IBM 9504 Monochrome Monitor, IBM 9517 Color Display or the IBM 6091/1091 family of ISO-compliant monitors, the Image-I adapter provides a competitive price/performance offering. Support under DOS, OS/2 (R) Presentation Manager (R), AIX (R) PS/2, MS-Windows (3) and AutoCAD (4) will provide customers with a workstation for image, design automation, desktop publications, engineering/scientific, and other applications requiring large screen high-resolution support. The Image-I Adapter/A is intended to co-exist with the existing family of Image Adapter/A display adapters. The Image-I adapter is intended to support the 6091/1091 family of ISO compliant monitors, the IBM 9517 Color Display and the IBM 9504 Monochrome Monitor. LIMITATIONS: Attachment of the IBM 9517 at 1360 x 1024 and 1280 x 1024 is supported as interlaced. These modes will not comply with ISO 9241 Part 3. The AIX PS/2 and X-Windows driver supports only 16 shades of gray and 256 colors for various resolutions with appropriate memory configurations. AIX PS/2 supports the Image-I adapter in compatibility mode. At configuration time, the "Select Monitor Type" menu does not provide a selection for the IBM Image-I Adapter/A. Regardless of selection, VGA or 8514/A, if previously configured into the system with the proper monitor, the X-Windows device driver for the Image-I adapter will drive the adapter in high-resolution mode. AIX PS/2 1.2 Advanced Display Graphics Library does not support the Image-I adapter. The Image-I Adapter/A does not support the ImagePlus Workstation Program/DOS (5621-042). The Image-I Adapter/A is not supported as a second display of the ImagePlus Workstation Program/2. The Image-I Adapter/A can not be installed in the PS/2 Model P70 386 (8573). The Image-I Adapter/A does not support the IBM PS/2 Image Adapter/A Printer/Scanner Option (#1632, 07F4402). Only one IBM PS/2 Image-I Adapter/A can be installed in a PS/2 system unit. VGA data display can only be achieved if the IBM Image-I Adapter/A is installed in the auxiliary video extension connector (AVEC) slot. Installation of the IBM PS/2 Image-I Adapter/A in 32-bit system slots is restricted to those without matched memory extension.
