Introduction
The 5540 was introduced as a lower-end alternative to the
5550. All variants were housed in a relatively compact
desktop enclosure. To compensate for the reduced number of "standard" expansion
slots, dedicated slots for memory expansion and Kanji ROM were provided. When
the 5550 moved to the desktop form factor, both models switched to the smaller
3.5" floppy drives.
Models B and E use the i8086 processor, all other models use the i80286.

Memory
In KDOS, the memory above 1 MB can be used only as a RAM disk.
In OS/2, all memory can be used for programs.
Floppy Drives
2DD is 720KB
2HC is 1.2MB
Up to 2 floppy drives can be installed, except for the models with a hard drive.
Later, an external 3.5-inch drive for media conversion could be added.
Video Modes
Displays with 16-dot characters have a resolution of 720x512 pixels.
Displays with 24-dot characters have a resolution of 1024x768 pixels.
16 out of 64 colors for both 16-dot and 24-dot types.
Kanji Characters
Early models don't come with a Kanji ROM as standard equipment. For these
models, Kanji fonts are loaded from software if the optional Kanji font card
isn't installed.
3.5" Floppy Models
The type of diskette drive has been changed, but other than that, there are
virtually no other changes. Therefore, all software and options designed for
the older 5540 models remain compatible.
